Liked how you trimmed the 2x6's to rest on the frame (oiled as well) got some good ideas from what you did here. Thanks for Posting this!

i've been researching my bed replacement project for a while now, and i gotta say this is one of the most original designs i've seen. the simplicity is key. primarily for the 2x6 stringers that conform to the frame. i never would have thought of that. it's brilliant.
@SteepintheWoods4 жыл бұрын
I was pretty happy with it! What made me come up with this particular design was that I had to patch weld the frame in several places and I really wanted the wooden bed to help span the frame distance and add strength. I have had many people tell me that doing the 2x6 in the shape of the frame looked pretty Sharp! Where I to do it over again I'd make the bed a little bit wider. I chose the width that I did because I was planning on adding some ammo cans to the four corners and having a reverse stepside look to it. However a man can't seem to afford those anymore.. so I left it

You did a awesome job, I'm think about doing that for my truck. Thks for idea.

Love it. It’s possible to make one that sits a little lower by skipping the frame joists, and instead attaching the cross pieces directly to the frame, using the original bolt holes.

Great video! Used this video to build this exact same bed on my 86 f150. I widened it to the center of the rear tires instead, notched the 2x6s on the frame for the gas tank hose to pass through, and ran carriage bolts through the factory bed bolt holes instead of welding brackets

I actually love the flatbed build. But I would love to see some fenders over the tires to keep the rocks out of my back window and mirrors. Could you please help me out with that one? I do love the build though
@SteepintheWoods10 ай бұрын
Yeah if I were to do it over right now I would do it differently myself, but for that specific truck I still think it was the best choice. Mostly because it needed it to be crazy cheap if I was going to be able to afford it LOL but also because we had to reweld the truck frame, so being lightweight was crucial but also being smaller was a hedge against putting too much weight on the truck. But if it was me, you can either make the bed a little taller so we can span over top of the wheels without them rubbing under load. Or you can take something like sheet metal and create a fender that sticks out past the bed. You could also fabricate your own wheel wells inside of the bed but that's going to be the most complicated.

If I were to do it over right now I may change a few things, but at the time and for that particular truck it made sense. Primarily making the bed a little bigger.. but since we had welded the frame back together I didn't want to do that.. I figured a small bed you could safely load full was better than a big one you might break the truck with LOL

@SteepintheWoods3 жыл бұрын
This truck is old enough not to need an inspection in my state. However if your state is more picky most times you just add a mud flap and it'll be plenty. that or you can make the bed a little bigger, just space out the two by fours above the tires so you have more room when it's loaded down.
@capecodder044 жыл бұрын
Good video and funny! Why didn't you go a little wider to the width of the cab?
@SteepintheWoods4 жыл бұрын
I was going for a step side look. There is ment to be an 81mm ammo can on each corner, but I haven't found any cheap enough. I was also trying to keep it light, my buddy made one so big his tires bottomed out until he installed helper springs. Thanks for watching!!
@MapleMarmite4 жыл бұрын
Nicely built box! Gas tank looks neat, too. Depending on what you carry, maybe an angle iron frame around it to protect it from anything heavy hitting into it, maybe? Make a dipstick from a metal rod bent over at the top and paint it flat black to show up the gas better. Water-based paint, obviously. How is it with the law on uncovered wheels there? Here, they would have to have mudguards over them to be legal but an easy make with some more angle and wood or metal for the guards, I guess. That's if you're using it on the roads, of course. Is that the little Festiva peeking out in the background - she still running the roads, too?
@SteepintheWoods4 жыл бұрын
I do want to make a removable cover for the tank for getting gravel. I have thought about some mud flaps with something interesting on them.. those Kinds of things really only come up during inspections here (if then) and Its old enough not to need one. Surprisingly I have been getting some very warm attention from passing police when in it.. thumbs up etc probably from the front tag more then anything. haha ya the festiva is my daily driver back and forth to work.. After all this with the truck I fear it may be feeling left out of all the fun. :) I have some other projects lined up before that though.
@796andy24 жыл бұрын
wonder if I could sneak that by Pa state inspection ...
@SteepintheWoods4 жыл бұрын
You would want to attach the tail lights differently. This truck is old enough it dose not need an inspection.
@ronlowther90444 жыл бұрын
What stopped you from making it the full width of truck and bumper? I really do enjoy your videos.
@SteepintheWoods4 жыл бұрын
Usually the tires hit the bed under heavy load. the bottom of the bed would need to be as tall as the highest point on your wheel well. with ours lifted it would have been almost too tall to use. As well as to meet the cost and weight down.
