Why do some kids thrive despite adverse experiences? The answer can be found, not in the children themselves, but in the adults around them. Learn the lessons that every adult needs to teach the children in their lives in order to build resilience in them! A child of the inner city, Teresse Lewis has long wondered why some students thrive amid difficulty and others don’t. The answer, she says, is both simple and complicated. As executive director of The Empowerment Center in Temecula, also through her work as a licensed therapist and school social worker, Lewis has helped many youngsters move from risk to resilience. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The real fact of resilience in children is that it is the ability to bounce back from adversity, adapt to change, and effectively cope with challenges by developing emotional, cognitive, and behavioral skills, often fostered through supportive relationships and a nurturing environment. Resilience enables children to maintain positive well-being and thrive despite difficult circumstances.
