So happy you were able to find a used trailer. This is going to make a fine chicken coop. I like the idea of a collection system for the rain water. It will save a lot of hauling of water. One thing I would recommend before you go much farther is to lay some linoleum sheet goods on the floor for ease of cleaning. Along with deep bedding, it will keep your coop so much easier to clean and with the deep bedding you will have fantastic compost for your garden. I look forward to watching this build. Have a Blessed day.

Margaret Bedwell Thanks for the comment! I was thinking about that honestly. I suppose it depends on the bedding... In my last coop, I just painted the floor with a good exterior paint and then used a bedding called Koop clean. It was basically chopped sassafras with PDZ added and it absorbed EVERYTHING. Never any odor either! Its really good stuff but I haven’t found it locally since we moved here so I may end up going with linoleum. We shall see!

@@HiddenCreekHomestead Sorry you haven't been able to find that product. Good luck with whatever you use. If you go w/linoleum, you might find a salvage piece the right size. Also, you might check Habitat for Humanity if you have one close to you. They have all sorts of products for sale. A lot of it from builders over stock. It's a good place to check for items for the house if you need to do anything in there.

Margaret Bedwell I keep forgetting about that. My wife has been wanting to check that out... she’s been dying to find some old vintage single pane windows for some projects

@@HiddenCreekHomestead I hope you find one close, it is like a giant thrift shop. They have everything from books to screws, tiles to glass ware. I took my friend to one where we live, she found a cast iron kitchen sink, double bowl no chips or scratches for 1/4 the price of a new one.

Heavy gauge 1x1or 1.5x 1.5 openings is better than plywood flooring, let the poop drop to ground feed the soil and less cleanup. Then every so often take a hose and wash out

Its great that you are doing to be self reliant. That part I love. I just utilized the old tool shed that came with the property. Added gutters to collect rain water and put in real floor. To add in protection from predators. That was 1st thing I did do around entire property.

Chauncey Pullman I think sheds make great enclosures for animals! They’re sturdy and easily modified. Great job!

Where you put your access/clean out door. Remove the 2x on the bottom. You don't need the strength and it will make cleaning out easier.

You should definitely pull that old plywood and ensure the flame hasn’t rusted, and there is a healthy dose of primer/paint even a layer of clear if possible before laying the plywood back onto it. You said Carolina? Humid as ever right? Lots of moisture…

Roof pitch, don't know. Rain water collection, pitch all to one side, only need one gutter that way.

Joe Valencic Its definitely on the list. If the channel happens to get monetized, I’d put a lot of proceeds back into making better videos. I still have no idea what Im doing 😂. Im a “jump in the pool and then learn how to swim” kinda’ guy.

Can you provide a handy list of all materials used for this project? Wanting to do the same thing with an old trailer we have!

Truthfully I don’t remember. I know I built it out of 2x3’s, 1/4” exterior primed OSB, corrugated metal roofing, and pine 1x4’s for the trim. Thats pretty much it. Slapped it together with exterior grade screws and called it a day.

You know. I been watching different channels for some years now. And I just don't get the idea of moving the chicken coop. My birds run the full range of the farm. True terminology of Free Range. Be it egg layer or meat bird. My parents did it thus way as well as grand parents and Lord every person farming in the city. But do as you see fit. I have never had any problems in pass 23 years here on this land. Maybe its a northern vs southern thing. Are just plain don't change what's has been great for over 200 years. But what do I know. I give away more food than stores sale around here.
@HiddenCreekHomestead4 жыл бұрын
Chauncey Pullman In truth, I love the visual of having birds free range the entire property and would much prefer it!... sitting on the front porch watching them, maybe some will pay a visit etc. In our case there are two or three areas specifically that we want to be able to have the birds concentrate on working for us. Also, there are areas we DONT want them scratching through and defecating etc. We’re on a small amount of acreage here and have to be more calculated in how we manage it. Also, we’re surrounded by deep woods and the birds are ALWAYS at risk of predation, however if I let them have free run of the whole property, the odds of predation go up even higher. Hope that makes sense.
