Love and Monsters is a new horror adventure movie starring Dylan O'Brien from Maze Runner that seems like Paramount taking another shot at a new A Quiet, in the meantime that A Quiet Place 2 is delayed. The movie was very well received and reviewed overall, but the one aspect it really shines at is the way it handles its monsters. The story is about a post-apocalyptic world infested with multiple giant monsters, but whether your horror movie has just one evil or multiple, there's a few very valuable lessons to learn from this movie at that front. So, in today's family friendly episode of Film Perfection, let's take a look at Love and Monsters and the way it handles... its monsters.

I've been a fan of his since the first episode of Teen Wolf, honestly. He just had a certain magnetism and relatable quirkiness. By the time season 3 rolled around, I knew he was going to do great things... His acting is fantastic! He's truly blossomed into a massive talent. I'm also super proud of him for persevering and continuing with his acting career after his near-death experience/injury on set of the third Maze Runner. I cannot imagine how traumatizing that would have been. 🤩❤️ Yeah, yeah I know, I sound like some kind of "rabid fan-girl" lolol I'm not eerily obsessive I promise (haven't even watched all his movies/shows), I just have a lot of respect for his work and he seems like a genuinely good person. I gotta say, this movie was really impressive. I was worried that the 'monsters' weren't going to be done well or it would be excessively cheesy. It was super quaint and fun.

@@despairwolf Hey, same here ! I've been fan of Dylan O'brien ever since i first saw in in Teen Wolf ! His acting's so good i just can't believe he's acting at all ; and as an actor, that's the absolute goal one should aim for. Anyway, I really hope he'll access to a wider range of characters to play in the future ; it's kind of a waste he's always stuck in playing the "good guy" in shows and movies aimed at teenagers and young adult ; i'm sure he's capable of a lot more ! @@chubibi06 Any time I see a movie coming out now and he's going to be in it I'm jokingly like *grabs my partner* "we gotta go see this, I need to support my other boyfriend!" or "the movie can't be a flop because Dylan's acting will single-handedly save it." That's about as wild as I'll get. I've never been one to get excessively flustered by celebrities. Realistically they're regular folks whose A) talent made them famous, B) family made them famous, C) luck made them famous, or D) genetics and/or surgery made them famous. I see celebrities as people like you and me. If I enjoy or respect a certain celeb I'll try to support them, but there's no high pitched squealing or frothing at the mouth here. ;) hahaha Dylan seems like a light-hearted and fun person; I think he found his fame via silly KZbin videos!

It would have been so easy to make the bunker roommates uncaring and evil, but no they weren't, it was just that the main character didn't feel like he belonged there. an imperfect hero is a good hero. if we make them unwilling and humble, it gets even better. like, "I _didn't choose_ to be a hero, and I'm absolutely _not hero_ material. but _somehow_ I manage to pull off some weird stuff that seem to qualify me as a hero _in the eyes of others_ . I'll just accept that because _I don't really care_ , and I _won't be bragging_ about this - all I do care is something _very simple_ ." please make heroes like this, because I can relate to them so much.

Something else I feel was missed: Each monster encounter is distinct because it shows the character at different stages of growth. He becomes steadily more and more confident and sure of himself as the movie progresses: At the very beginning, he's so scared that he freezes up and nearly dies, and spends the next couple of fights relying on others for protection. Then by the time he's on his own and has to fight the centipede, he's still not quite sure of himself, but manages to overcome his anxiety and kill the creature. Then finally, by the time he's fighting the crab, he's lost all hesitation and become self-realized The show is _also_ a master class in how to create a nice, even character progression

7:15 You know.. not enough writers are taught the lessons of the Labors of Hercules these days, because there you have basically a guy strong like the Hulk, getting tasks before him, in which all his strength is meaningless. And if even the ancient greek writers knew that this is how you tell a good story. You can have an amazingly strong character, but then you need to give them obstacles that cannot be solved by their strength.
@diersteinjulien6773
@diersteinjulien6773 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree, for a lot of his labors, Hercules's strength was a key aspect of accomplishing them. But, and there we agree, strength alone was never enough, he always needed to use his knowledge and wisdom too. Hercules's Labors lesson is that, because a character is the strongest, doesn't mean that he should brute-force his way until it works.
@IshanDeston
@IshanDeston 4 жыл бұрын
@@diersteinjulien6773 All the Labors were designed that they couldn't be solved with strength alone. For example the Nemean Lions skin being impenetrable was negating Hercules strength for the majority of that story. And only after Hercules Wits help him to realize that he needs to kill it without breaking its skin, does he figure out a way to go about it, without breaking its skin. The lions pelt negated Hercules Power for the majority of that story. Only in the end Hercules figures out how he can apply his assets to solve the task. And the other tasks are similar. He gets a task in which his strengths are an asset, but not the solution, and he has to figure out how to work around the issue that negates his assets in the first place.

Say what you will about the crab at the end. That cheeky smile right before eating the bad guy was worth a million dollars. Also, I have to disagree with the stakes not being higher during that fight. The captain unleashed the crab specifically so that it could eat not just Joel, but all those people to "refuel" it. Not only that, they were planning to go do the same thing to other colonies they encountered, meaning a lot of people would have died if the crab wasn't stopped there.

Yeah I watched it and it gave me some serious fallout vibes. I mean there was even a scene where he was hanging out with a robot and it played oldie music in the background.

Personally, I really like “Monsters” (2010) as a “Monsters being almost secondary to the main story” story. It’s mostly a “on the road” story in a world where they’re just happens to be giant monsters. 🐍 💀 no step on SNEK! 🇺🇸🇭🇰

What a wonderfully entertaining and fun film this is. Great writing, likeable characters, solid world building and no agenda apart from that of hope and a spirit of adventure. How refreshing to come across a well crafted gem like this. Reminds me a lot of How to Train Your Dragon in the mannerisms of the lead and the overall messaging. Light hearted and very enjoyable.

@Filmento I noticed you didn't like the exposition dump in the beginning of the movie, what in your opinion is a good way for movies to tell the audience the history of the world they are about to visit? or do you prefer to be placed in the world and have small things revealed as the story goes on?
@PhantomThiefXI
@PhantomThiefXI 4 жыл бұрын
This sort of thing gets me because while understandable that infodump isn't ideal, there are constraints that affect movies and such media, I'm sure there are directors/writers who'd rather show that info than tell that info, but they have their own constraints with budget and runtime, so they have to take away from somewhere to focus on what they want I find myself thinking about such things on weekly manga especially, they have 16-18 pages to advance their story, or some 30-40 pages to get it started and get attention from readers. You may love the idea of dropping what's going on little by little across every act, but if you're on a clock trivially set by someone else, priorities and approaches change, I believe.

Kaitou Xi that part. Most movies will have an exposition dump at some point. It's about HOW you do it that makes it work or not

Probably investing a couple of minutes showing what happened. In this case it could have been counterproductive, since those sequences are shown but for character development. At the beginning the protagonist seems like a coward, but then the movie shows us his trauma so we can se how he eventually overcomes it

It's best to turn infodumps into actual scenes with characters: In Star Wars case, you can turn the opening crawl into a "Flashback" with princess Leia contacting the bothan spies and getting the plans for the Death Star on board of her ship. Obviously making it clear that they need it to defeat the evil empire and its superweapon... And then going right to scene 1 (Hell, the final scene of Rogue One can be turned into that first scene of EP.IV with some careful editing). In other types of work, instead of telling the audience about such and such, you have a scene that lets the audience connect the dots on their own: If your character is lazy and careless, for example, you don't have people saying it, but you have a scene with him on his room, as having an undone bed, some half-eaten food bowls on the floor, and all of his clothes on a chair, while he's on his laptop playing games, etc. It all goes down to "show, don't tell"

I think The Lord of the Rings, is a good example of a movie doing this right. It tells you what you need to know, and shows you at the same time. The visual showed to go with the narration is engaging and the way it is narrated sets the mood. An other good example is a comedy that started with this super serious exposition: "On May 9, 1969, two kilometers from the northern border of Laos, the 101st Infantry Division of the United States Army advanced towards Hill 937. For them this is a simple exploratory mission. For the Viets hill 937 is a strategic area. The ten conscripts of the 101st Division, little trained in combat, had to carry out this routine mission in less than two hours. They will heroically resist for nine days... This film does not tell their story." At first, I was confuse, I thought I was watching the wrong movie...then at the last sentence, I burst out laughing. The narration was so serious that it caught me of guard. It really did set the mood for the rest of the movie. So in my opinion, those kind of exposition dump is not always a bad thing.

I loved this breakdown. After catching L&M, I was adamant that my son watch it too. It's an amazingly coherent parable about coming of age. My son is on the cusp of teenhood. One of his challenges is managing his emotions enough, including while movie watching (imagine that we had to leave the cinema an hour into infinity War because he was so overwhelmed). Going into this movie, my expressed instruction to him was to manage his emotions - he will have to process the hero's journey (literally and figuratively) by himself. I couldn't have picked a better movie, because Joel was the perfect stand-in for my son (and many other audiences of course). Suffice to say, my son sat through the movie (even the initial sequence with the first monster eating the guy) and was even invested in Joel, asking me questions along the way, and I couldn't be more proud of him. This is the power of great storytelling. The best stories enable one pause to think, feel, process and learn. Thank you for this great video! How have I not seen you before?? Subbed! ❤️

Dutch in Predator is an example of a hero who, despite being strong and capable, is still unprepared to face the monster. So you're right, the monster has either to complement the character's weaknesses or to beat them at their own strenghts, forcing them to get resourceful
