Imagine if after the Beeeeees scene Jup started to realize she could actually influence living beings and slowly started experimenting and becoming better at controlling even people, but maybe only after interacting in close proximity. She could have become a character that could get out of sticky situations on her own, using only her cunning, and she could have had a taste of what real power felt like, almost falling to the dark side of control and debating with herself or others if what she was capable of doing was right. This could have also justified the ending where she prefers to stick to a job (at least part time) that grounds her in reality and in the life of normal people. What we got is princess Peach, always in a new castle while Mario hurries to save her. (I realize that those powers would be really similar to Code Geass, but the difference in the story is enough to make it original. Also, no fan of Code Geass would scoff at the possibility of seeing that kind of plot in a well done block buster)

You could have even added in some sort of mental conditioning to the CT character and having Jupiter around could have somehow fixed that or reversed that, give him more personal stakes in the movie rather directly tying back into the who of Jupiter but the what, as in what she can do, not just have her fall in love or whatever simply because the plot demands it or because she's special. As a story beat it is fine but it didn't really help the movie. I roll my eyes at these "save Earth" centric movies when apparently there's a whole lot more going on beyond our own planet.

Jupiter is what I call a "Pinball Protagonist." They don't really do anything, they just get bounced around by the plot. The problem is people thinking of Jupiter as the protagonist. In this particular story, she is the McGuffin. The protagonist (Kain) has to protect her from the antagonists (the space royals) The problem comes from the writers choosing to use her as the point of view character, which is somewhat necessary as Jupiter represents the audience; she is clueless about this world she has stumbled into and Kain's explanations to Jupiter are exposition for the audience so Jupiter and the audience learn about the world at the same time. I would imagine they would have given her character a lot more agency had they been able to make sequels.
@Psiberzerker
@Psiberzerker 3 жыл бұрын
@@FURognar Right, exactly. As writers, it's hard for the audience PoV character to have free will, because you have to second guess the Audience. Sitting there, and trying to second guess what they would do in that situation, and maybe wondering if they brought enough popcorn? If they're thinking about the popcorn, then you failed to keep them immersed.

The movie had one thing that ruined everything for me: it was another typical "young adult romance adventure" movie (like Divergent), were the main characters are just there to fall in love and sell tickets rather than making a story well developed.
@sarahdennis6450

But even that part was done poorly. There was no lead up to them suddenly being in love. No longing looks, no almost kissing, no reasons why they were attracted to each other (except that she's always liked dogs.... ICK!). Just suddenly in the middle of the movie they were in love, for literally no reason. It did nothing to push the storyline, it made absolutely no sense.

The worst part for me is the fact this movie has some potential, if that world building was made right. Sumarizing, the galaxy is ruled by a immortal elite of rich people that harvest life from other worlds, and, since the heir of vast a vast empire has born here, Earth is the next target. Looks cool, right? Put some awesome action scenes in it and you have a great movie... or mix everything in a convoluted way and get Jupiter ascending.

That is my problem with this movie, wasted potential. I loved the action style, and I felt a lot of Dune vibes to the worldbuilding. I think the problem is that they tried to make a love story with a "little princess" feel to it. If they rushed to the point, made it more action-packed, and only explored One of the Siblings, we could have a good start of a series.
@SampoPaalanen
@SampoPaalanen 4 жыл бұрын
In many ways those are worst kind of failures, the ones that had potential to be great but wasted that potential. I'd say the central love story isn't the issue here so much as the main focus character (indeed the one the film is named after) being essentially a prop for the other characters and also unclear and vague motivations for the villains. Granted I've not seen the movie myself but everything I've read/heard is that Jupiter isn't really actively involved in her story so much as simply taken where the story needs her to be, either physically or emotionally. If you made the focus character more of an active part of the story it would help a lot, for example have save herself from the villains at some point.

There's plenty that could have fixed this. Say that life on earth has a genetic trigger that when activated just POOFS them into the life extension goo... except for Jupiter. Now, you can have the "harvest" trigger by the push of a button. Just hammer in the "life on earth didn't evolve naturally" button to really drive in the concept that our understanding of our place in the universe is a lie, push in a few references to the great filter... ...In addition to giving us an actual protagonist.

@@DonVigaDeFierro Actually, that could give her a really interesting choice: Accept people being Gatorade, and she gets to be a queen - inheriting everything related to that technology, and being looked on as the second coming of their bringer of (nearly) eternal life. Or she can value *all* life, reject that, and attempt to create a rebellion. *Some* people will respect her, and she'll have followers - but she doesn't get to be a queen, and she doesn't get to inherit anything. @GroB Hahn to be fair, was The Matrix always intended to be a trilogy? Joel Silver, the mega producer at Warner Brothers, took a big risk on The Matrix, especially after a lot of the initial casting decisions fell through. Who's to say he didn't go to the Wachowskis and tell them, "Yeah, you're going to make more sequels. Why? Because I gave you a fuck ton of money to make your movie. People loved it, so you're going to make me more money." And if you know anything about Joel Silver, well... In case you don't, here's an example of a story about him. He was dating a girl in 1980s. She wanted to be an actress and he, with the clout he had, could make that happen. He told her that she shouldn't worry, and he had the perfect part for her in his next Blockbuster feature. And to his credit, she did get a part in his next movie, Die Hard. No, she's not John McCain's wife. You remember that scene when Hans Gruber's team infiltrates the building, and there's that brief brief scene when the topless woman runs out of the office when she's caught getting fucked? Yeah, that was the girlfriend If I'm wrong, and it was always intended to be a trilogy, Joe is still a coke head cunt, and the Wachowskis still wrote Bound and Assassins. Bound is fantastic, and Assassins is dumb fun

@@Clockwork0nions You asked, so I'm just sharing what my individual understanding is. The Matrix and The Terminator franchises are both based on a single treatment by Sophia Stewart. There are a lot of reports that say she won a huge settlement after a copyright lawsuit. Other sources say it's just an Internet rumor/hoax. When I look at everything James Cameron has done, I can see his style. He is a competent filmmaker in his own right. When I look at everything the Wachowski's have done, the ONLY thing that is solid is The Matrix. If these ideas were stolen, it would explain the inconsistencies of the Wachowskis. On the other hand, Soderbergh, Tarantino, Nolan, Aronofsky, Ritchie, Shyamalan have consistent styles and consistent reception according to the way they applied their respective styles to their films. All of this is to say the Wachowskis didn't have much to do with putting their stamp on The Matrix. When they do leave their mark on a film, everyone is left scratching their heads (in a bad way). Filmmakers always have a Magnum Opus, but they only have 1 thing that stands so far and above the rest of their work. Even if they stole the concept, they learned NOTHING from the experience of directing a landmark film. It's all disappointing and baffling really.

The issue of not following or understanding about them is how the Wachowskis can't help but try so HARD to make their dialogue "deep" that it ends up becoming and pretentious, confusing mess where characters use complex words so blatantly and with no restraint that it becomes impossible for a normal person to understand what they are talking about. This was also a problem in The Matrix but for what it's worth it had an interesting world and concept, great action scenes and a main character, while not spectacular, did do cool and important things while having agency to his character that Jupiter Jones just does, not, HAVE!

The Fifth Element is a pretty good comparison between these two flicks. There's a lot of similarities that be drawn between these two movies. Strange technologies, planets under threat, action, a world much larger than we know, other inhabited worlds, villainous aliens, benevolent aliens, strong male escorts to a female protagonist who proves pivotal in saving the Earth/Universe. Heck, even the actresses are both named Mila/Milla and are of Ukrainian descent. The huge difference between Jupiter and Leeloo is that Jupiter was barely a character and more like a Mcguffin and never underwent any kind of development, where as Leeloo was a character whose development and progression could be witnessed throughout the film. From learning how to communicate, to forming bonds with other characters, to realizing the importance of love and how it could be used to triumph over evil.

If you are making a character who is well liked by many other characters, always remember to ask yourself, “why would someone want to simp for them?”. If you go with, “Oh because she’s the queen” and nothing else, like this movie, rewrite the character.

I love Wachowski's work on the Matrix, it's my all-time favorite. But the way most of their following movies failed keeps reminding me of some rumors that I refuse to believe, saying that they got into some lawsuit for stealing other's scripts or stories. I still have high hope on Matrix 4, just keeping my fingers crossed.

I really want to argue with about how harry got trampled on for the entire series and how he didn't actually get everything handed to him. Then I remembered that Jk Rowling is still trying to change canon and most of my info might actually be from fanfiction
@BAMGM
@BAMGM 4 жыл бұрын
Rogelio Bacanto oh, he definitely didn’t get _everything_ handed to him. Over the course of the series, he has trouble studying, he isn’t nearly as popular as one would expect from his celebrity status, especially in later books, and ultimately he has to go through a lot of trials, trauma, and failures, and has to overcome it all to earn his happy ending by *acting* rather than being carried around, with a good balance of his personal qualities and help from his friends allowing him to succeed. However, a lot of stuff in the early books, including his family fortune, the Headmaster’s attention, the very fact that most of the family abuse problems are mitigated by being sent to the most special school ever, and many events during the early school years, can be attributed to two factors completely outside of Harry’s control: who he is by birth, and Voldemort’s obsessive desire to murder him.

@BAMGM

raksh9 as his legal guardians, he still has to come back to them every summer break. Every book usually starts at the Dursley household, with Harry or someone else from the magical world causing a commotion that leaves the household in disarray, so I guess that might sound like comeuppance to some people. To name a few examples, one of their important guests has a cake dropped on her head (I don’t remember if that was in the book or movie only), Uncle Vernon’s sister gets inflated and flies away like a balloon, one of the walls in their house is destroyed after someone gets stuck inside it using fireplace portal magic, or Harry and Dudley narrowly escape an encounter with demonic creatures best described as “despair incarnate”. All of these are from different books. Eventually, they do disappear from the story and are never seen again, but that’s probably better for their own safety.
