I’ve had all the materials to make a ghillie suit in a box since I was maybe 17. 11 years later it’s still in the box because I didn’t want to take the time to build. Seeing how you guys did it makes me want to jump into it and test it with my paintball sniper

Last year at my school band camp, we had a surprise nightgame, where we were given the instructions, and 1 hour to prep. It was a capture the flag type of thing, where each team has a flag bearer and has to run or hide. Anyways, while everyone was hanging around, chatting and such (as teenagers do) me, being a tryhard army boy, was running around making a makeshift ghillie suit (sticking twigs and leaves in my camo button-up shirt) and using my a friend's makeup and mascara as facepaint. Obviously, I was selected as a flag bearer, and I almost made it to the end of the round. I was discovered after 45 minutes of laying in the dirt in a bush and getting eaten alive by bugs. I was chased out and tackled by 20 seniors (it really sucked). Anyways, we lost cuz seniors always win, and I vowed I would come back next year with a military grade ghillie suit. (That's why I watched this video) very informative! I hope to win the game this year. Thank you for the advice guys!

Great video! I made a ghillie suit when I was 17/18, just for the hell of it. Can confirm it was a lot of evenings sitting in front of the TV sewing, tying and gluing netting, twine and jute to get the desired effect. My best friend helped me with getting the netting positioned right, and even dragging it behind his car for a while to rough it up. Dumped it in my parents' compost heap for about two months (and poured buckets of water over said heap at frequent intervals), and now, over a decade later, it still smells suitably 'foresty' whenever I get it out. I've only played Airsoft once, but I took it along and got two kills on guys who were only about 3 metres away from me and never saw me there. So I guess it works. I went with the boonie hat method, but found on that outing that it obstructed my vision a lot (since I wasn't using scope so didn't have anything protruding past the brim to look through), so I've sewn a scrim net to the collar that I can flip over my head. All on my own initiative, so I'm grateful to Cam for confirming it's a legit technique!

Ok I’m a Specialist in the Army…in my plate carrier I decided to put 2 1 quart canteens, one on each side and the standard issued camelback. It’s a lot of water I know. I’ve seen so many videos here on how to setup the plate carrier and noticed they put little effort on hydration. Like in my opinion water is equally important as ammo and best fit to carry as much water as you can on your body. Lmao

Smaller scale ghillie can be used by regular combat troops too if majority of the action is in forests. Especially helmet and then maybe shoulders should be covered since they are the ones that show when in prone or in a fighting hole. My country's army provided troops with camo netting for helmet to attach vegetation to it

Great video. My sons love to sneak through the woods and always wanted to build a ghillie suit. I showed them this video and they are super excited to make one now. Thanks!! We have a question tho, is it okay if some of the netting "dangles around" a bit or does it all have to be tied down super close to the base clothing?
@garretttaylor8685

I've found that a LITTLE extra dangle does help break up the outline, however. If you let to much dangle then you're going to catch on every twig, leaf, and branch out there, and will look like a Bush Wookie.

@RollingDutchmann the American constitution gives a right of revolution to its citizens, partly through the second ammendment, its what the country was founded on. Basically you don't like your government, then you change it yourself. Well in the vastness of America's landscape, if we fought a war against our government it would be guerilla fighting, you have small groups who know the area and camouflage themselves while laying out ambushes for the opposition as to take out as many as possible without detection. Now the more common use that would get me on less federal watchlists is hunting. You don't have to wear orange while hunting turkey and they have a very good eye so I wear my ghillie suit while turkey hunting to blend into the environment.

You leave it sweaty. If there is any scent throw baking soda and or dirt on it. However, there shouldn't be any real smell because when you use fresh vegetation it masks the smell.

How much faster would this be if you just nutted up and got a nice sewing machine? My wife got a ridiculous sewing machine several years ago but we haven't used it much. She does (or at least did) a lot of crocheting and knitting so one of our moms (not sure if it was my mom or hers) bought her this insanely cool sewing machine. I've had to do a lot of clothing repairs and all that kinda stuff by hand so I know how much it sucks. I'd like to learn how to use the damned thing so I can make a couple really nice rucks and maybe a better plate carrier than the cheapo that my level 4 plates are in.
