Sizing the walls used to be done with cow glue that left a sheen on the walls. When you hung your paper the water in the paste would reactivate the size and the two would dry together, even though the primary reason for sizing was to kill suction and create slip. Using a thinned out version of the wallpaper paste as size later became an acceptable practical alternative - but using pva as a size can be risky as it can dry like a skin, not reactivate and mix with the paste on the paper and even pull off the wall. Those cheap snapoff blades are thinner and less likely to drag than stanley blades, though for me scissors are best everytime. Good to see someone using a chalk line to start off lining paper - I was surprised at some of the so-called professional videos not understanding the need on lining paper. For anyone reading, if you don't use a chalk line to hang your first piece on each wall, then it may look like it is hung in a straight line to the eye, but the edge will probably waiver in and out 5mm or more. That means every piece of paper you hang on that wall you will have to make it waiver in and out to match that first piece. Use a chalk line to create a straight line for your first piece and the rest of the wall will be straight.

Following your advice I hung an anaglypta coral pattern RD995 and it looked great, only there were some small gaps which I filled using caulking and it blended in seamlessly, that was until I painted it and at certain angles you could see the caulking, which appeared as a thin line. Is there anything I can do to rectify this the colour of the paint was wheat I've given it 2 coats! Should I give it another pass maybe covering the caulking with a heavy coat? I would be grateful for any advise you have, thank you for your time

Hi, great channel. Thank you for the way you explain everything in detail. I've learnt so much. I was wondering if you could help me with a job I've just completed. I used lining paper (grade 1400) to help with the imperfections on the walls. The room had been rewired so I filled the channels with plaster and a finishing plaster (easyfill). Before papering I treated the walls with a watered down pva. Once the lining paper was completely dry I applied the first coat of paint just as you've described by adding a small amount of water. I then let the paint to dry for 4hrs (following the manufacturers spec of 2-4hrs). I was extremely happy with the result so far untill I finished the second coat. Bubbles started appear and some of the paper seems to have come away especially over the new plastered sections. Also the paint seems to be darker in sections! There's no heating in the room and maybe the paint hasn't dried completely yet but it's had 12hrs so far! I'd really appreciate your feedback so I can rectify these issues. Many thanks, Mark.

Had some problems with a 1700 grade lining paper on a hall stairs and landing. All looked fine at first, No overlaps. First coat then fill with easy sand polycell. Couple of seams had overlapped in the centre of two strips of paper..Could this be due to dry seams? I had to cut out the overlapps and fill again.

Can depend on what lining paper you used normal or fiber lining. Normal lining is easy to manipulate over the uneven surface of the wall. Other than that it's down to poor application.

Im about to line paper my livingroom before painting. 3 out of the 4 walls are long with no windows etc so I will go horizontal like this. The 4th wall has a door and large window which leaves 3 areas needing paper. Each area is only around 80cm wide so thinking going vertical with these bits... Is this adviced or should i keep it all horizontal??

Good video, i will ask you something. I have an old house that my father in law constructed, all walls are in cement (concret) and are just painting over the cement, the walls are very roaf too. Can i use lining paper 1200 or 1400 and paste direct over the wals or not ? The second question is about painting, whats the best paint typ to paint over the lining paper ? The last question is about the type of lining paper, there are several types or the brand and type is not very important?, Sorry for my bad English, thanks. Antonio Portugal
@PaintingandDecorating
@PaintingandDecorating 5 жыл бұрын
sorry for my late reply hope your job went okay... so many questions some slip by.... depending on how rough you mean rough... no. textured wallpaper would be better for rough walls... hides more imperfections.... you can get some thick insulating lining paper and special adhesive ... good for cold walls and will smooth them... expensive.. we have videos on it.. and for paint most paints will be okay to go over lining paper...

The tennis elbow that I suffered from was caused by playing squash. Fortunately, I made a complete recovery. The way I was cured may not be relevant to your tendonitis but I'll quickly go through it just in case it may help you. 1) Morning and evening immersions in very hot water as already mentioned. 2) Winding tape around the racket handle to make it larger and therefore forcing me to change my grip on the handle. 3) Making a conscious effort not to grip the handle of the racket too tightly. The other thing that may help you is to use a smaller pasting brush. I realise this may slow you down but it may help. Hope some or all of this helps. Cheers, Mark.

@PaintingandDecorating
@PaintingandDecorating 5 жыл бұрын
Paste is not made for sealing although it would help stop paste absorbing off the wallpaper. Size is very old school and it's harder to use because you need to mix it with boiling water and it stinks. PVA diluted does a far better job quicker to use.
