My problem with the Cellini is that its price puts it in competition with high horology dress pieces from brands like Patek and Vacheron. If given the choice between a Cellini and a Calatrava, there's no contest. If Rolex put out a steel Cellini and priced it at around $7000, I think there'd be a lot more buyers.

I like the Cellini too and honestly? I'd like one as my first Rolex, but out of principle, I won't spend that much for a sparsely decorated movement. Especially not when watches like VC Patrimonies, PP Calatravas, ALuS Saxonia Thins, and Breguet Classiques occupy a similar price range. And it's not like Cellinis are hot ticket items like Submariners, GMTs OPs. Even if it says, "Rolex", it's not in demand like the steel sports models.

I'm curious, among us watch enthusiasts of all kinds that follow this channel. How many of you are/would/have a Rolex for the appeal of and interest in the watch itself? I find it more and more when people speak of them it's always 'investment' or 'it will increase in value by X in 5 years' or something else and usually delegated to a safe or an unopened box waiting to be sold at a profit years later. For a long time now and due to the average person I've come across who owns one in my country they are a mere shallow status symbol, especially the full golden ones which I just find tacky and kitsch as all hell. Not saying I know hundreds of people who own them but with those who do seeing them out and about on social events or business is extremely rare. One day with life priorities on track, I'd love to own the Explorer - enjoy and wear it as other pieces I own but this would be a purchase with no regard to resale or 'residual value' unless said life takes a horrible turn where I'd have to sell it for other reasons.

I think Rolex should give you the watch of your choice for helping them sell the Cellini.....while I get your point, it seems to me that your logic is....I want a Rolex, but I can’t justify or afford the ones I like because they cost too much, so I am going to get the Rolex that no one cares about and I don’t really want/like just so I can have a Rolex (but all the while I will have to be running around -in my own head at least - screaming BUT SEE I HAVE A ROLEX TOO!). Far simpler solution...realize that Rolex is no where near justifiable at its price, that it no longer serves its designed purpose ( as a useful tool) - no one uses a 24k gold hammer, and there are far better (build and utility) options out there. If you want to spend money on marketing so you can fit a trend....do so but get what you really want....not the one that NO ONE WANTS....well that very few want. Wear what you love. Be well. Thanks for the video!

There in lies the problem with Rolex, AP, PP et al. A lot of owners are afraid to wear them because of speculation. It’s like having a Ferrari and can only drive it to weekend coffee shop parking lot meets. Watches are very personal markers of time, and like those trusty trucks/cars that waited to take us home after a long difficult day, they are dependable witnesses to important times in our lives (unless they’re Brits’ :). Got my gmt2 18years ago on my first anniversary and wore it at least 2 x/w. Many memories. Haven’t worn it much since divorce, but I will never sell it. It’s naive of me to even think this, but it’s disappointing that many of these companies make very little real effort to let us “come home again”.
