Man, I looked for ages for a suitable bus. Finally in 2021 I scored a 1990 Thomas high ceiling with fewer than 28,000 miles on it. Patience is a virtue! Cheers!

Omg!!! I can’t believe I just stumbled across this video because I’m about to purchase a bus. And the blue shuttle bus in this video IS THE EXACT bus I was thinking of buying. What the hell are the chances of that???

With the last video and this one, I'm growing to believe that there isn't any *"Right"* or *"Perfect"* bus, it's just how little/much you want to accept work needs done to it :|

just finished watching "A PERFECT Off-Grid SKOOLIE DREAM HOME for a Family of 4". Man that was a real credit to you and your team when you used to make these. Amazing to see the quality of the finish after a couple of years on the road and being lived in. I have just started a build on a Mercedes Benz 0404. I've been binge-watching you videos for ideas and guidance. thanks heaps

The gas 6.0 Chevy makes is a hell of an engine. Have one in my 2011 Chevy 5 window and it’s amazing. Just about to hit 200,000 miles. And it’ll go for many more

Lately if the auction site doesn't give the engine, but gives the VIN you can often look up the engine that way.

I think the reason why the GOV used that motor was due to its size being shorter length and was a better fit as the straight 6 is longer. Also the 6 inline is low maintenance. This other motor keeps the maintenance troops busy and the noise and vibration keeps the troops alert and awake , sounds good 👍

I've seen a lot of the Maxxforce DTs in school buses get an in frame at 100-150k miles. I had one district have three in one year, and they were all at the same time. I looked at all three the same day and had to tell them the bad news, two got fixed and one got parked since it was almost done on depreciation. I'm wondering if that Bluebird Wanderlodge was a government special order for an agency. I've seen some rigs like that before. And I LOVE me a Wanderlodge, factory built skoolie conversion. Probably a CAT 3208 in it, wonder what transmission it has. I also like the GMC P3500 school buses, they're so ugly they're beautiful. A 6.2 would be a mechanical Stanadyne DB2 injection pump. In 1994 I think it was the electronic PMD was added but the displacement went up to 6.5 liters and it got a turbo too. The 6.2 was designed in the 1970s as a fuel efficient diesel, the Arab oil embargo was a big driver of fuel efficiency. The 6.2 is not fast but is dependable, I have owned several pickups with the 6.2/6.5 and also worked on a number of them in Humvees. That transit bus should have a Cummins L9 but I would not get a transit bus, all the ones I've seen are beyond worn out when they are finally disposed of. The shuttle bus is another one I have personal experience on, they suck. All the ones I've worked on have haphazard wiring and such from the conversion company, the OE side is fine. And like you mentioned they are operating at close to max GVW so things tend to wear out sooner. Some of my rural districts have the short van based buses and I always recommend a short bus on a regular bus chassis when they talk replacement.

hey chuck have absafruitly loved your videos as we have been looking for an adventure home on wheels to build out for festival work rig/ farm house while we build a cob / green house for along time... atleast ever since i could stick my hand through the rust on the frame of my old van we junked :/.... i work at fedex an i feel the stepvan is the ultimate conversion vehicle with 7ft ceilings right off the bat you are ready to roll with the subfloor an framing. able to skip a bus demo/roof raise ect... larger square inside aluminum box cab separated to retain a more comfortable inhouse temp due to poor insulation areas/windows in the cab... lighter better gas milage.. comes with a "passenger seat" ect ect i feel like i have 50 pros for a step van and none for a bus.... could you please share your opinion on stepvans and have you worked on any or thought about this? why or why not?! thanks for all you do an are!

Which maxxforce DT are you referring, there are 2. 08-10.5 a 466E with a dpf, 10.5 up dual charger and alot of issues. Guys a local barn said they had good luck non def ones. Said they take out city ones to "blow out". Said other than egr coolers same as the rest. Believe alot has to do with bus barn and drivers. Seen many drivers run routes over heating and burning the motor down. Eventually there will be no old busses left and people will have to figure out newer stuff.

Are you back in your house in Colorado? I thought you were on the road and staying with a friend to help with their bus. Not that it's any of my biz, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who is wondering given your state of mind when you closed your shop. Hope you are doing OK. It's good to see your subscriber count steadily increasing! Happy New Year, and hope all goes well for you in 2024.

What's your opinion on a 2008 Thomas school bus with MB9000 Diesel engine and Alison automatic transmission? Bus has 94,000 miles and price is $8,000 and is about 35' long.

I know you focus on buses, but I would welcome you spreading your expertise to older RV’s. They come with tanks, etc already. A project where you updated a older class C with better insulation and electronics would be really interesting

Chuck loves the old bus. I understand the appeal, but it goes against everything I've ever been taught. Vehicles depreciate, and are worth less the older they are. Of course I live in Indiana, where the older the vehicle, the more rust and mechanical problems they have.
@MarkWRCCTV
@MarkWRCCTV Жыл бұрын
I guess it comes down to whether you want something a person with a degree of mechanical aptitude can be reasonably expected to service and repair. The older buses like my 1990 are completely mechanical, so all it needs to start and run is air, fuel and enough vital fluids to keep the innards from vacating their assigned work area. Of course, I'd never buy a Rust Belt unit of that vintage and expect it to be of sound anything. So I get where you're coming from. Cheers!
