Nice review Bill, but as a european, I may add a few points to the info. First of all, the Corrado came in a 1,8L 8 V 4 cylinder engine. Then a 2,0 16v 4 cylinder. Then a 1,8L 8v 4 cylinder G60 g-lader, then a 2,8 VR6 and then a 2,9 VR6. The Golf never got the 2,9 engine. Look out for cracked heads on the 2,8 VR6. The 2,9 usually last better. A facelift made the front grille and the interrior a bit different, as you mentioned, but there is an intermediary model between the two stages, where the old interrior received the electronic odometer. The G60 is in my humble view a better car, as it's got the lighter weight and no engine problems. The G60 also had forged rods, forged pistons, a stronger engineblock and of course sodium filed valves with oil squirting jets underneath the pistons. As you may know the side bolster on the Recaro seated versions are slimmer than on the Golf 2 (and 3), as the Corrado is lower, and some customers had dificulty entering the car... ;) So, on mine, I used the foam from the Edition 1 Recaro Golf2, and installed it in the original Corrado front seat backrests. Also I installed a manual pump up lumbar support from a similar set from a bmw. The Corrado never came with cromolux windows, only slightly green tinted. Only the Golf2 Edition1 had cromolux (slight mirror effect). The closeure and comfort closure are depending on market and equipment level. The gearmaster can be updated to be even better (all models). The GOlf2 watertray just in front of the windscreen fits very nicely, and a Passat wiper motor cover also fits on the Corrado. Better weather proofing. In 1991 VW Motorsport (now shut down - nothing to do with the present VW Racing), made some Corrado's for hillclimbing in Germany, also known as Bergrenen. For that purpose VW Motorsport developed a better cylinderhead with porting, bigger valves, bigger inlet and bigger exhaust manifolds. This G60 is developing 190 Hp, so the same as a 192 Hp 2,9 VR6. The 2,8L VR6 made 174 Hp (in Europe at least). Some americanised cars made less power because of smog reg. in California. The cylinderhead on that G60 model were productionised and came on the regular G60 cars for a while. I have one of those cars. Stock standard. I just made a free flowing cat and a bigger all the way through exhaust system. The electric rear spoiler does increase the downforce with 60 percent and is windtunnel made. No show only, all go faster bits. The combined oil/watercooler, which is a water cooled oilcooler (a little square box) must be changed every 5-6 years and also the oil supply line from the engine block to the G-lader. If done, the engine wil last very very well. No bearing or any other engine problems at all. There plastic elbow on to pof the radiator in the front can leak after many years, so renew that precautionary or get the metal elbow. Remove the plastic intake sound deadner box (lunchbox), and install a metal elbow and get more power and more intake noise without affecting longevity. Don't sand down the G-lader internals as it gets too thin and break. Get a bigger G-lader isntead plus chip and jets. While the cars equiped with central locking, even a few with comfort closing, came with locking the fuel door, not all cars had central locking. It all depended on model sped and equipment level. I have the sunroof in mine, tilt and slide, and it broke a littl etap. I renewed all 6 small kits, it took half a day in the living room, and ALWAYS, ALWAYS use the propper VW special grease to lube it with. NOTHING else. Then it works. I've had my G60 for 9 years, no probls with anything, nor the sunroof. There is a little tap in the door handle locking mec, that can break. It will. A metal kit is readily available and that fixes it for good. For one reason or the other the US Corrado's had slightly less light from the head lamps. Euro lamps light better. As on most VW'cars, the Recaro slide plastics wear out, and it's easy and very cheap to replace in just 10 minutes. After "only" 30 years, the original clutch master and clutch slave began to leak, so I replaced those as well. Suspension I have long ago replaced witha sportier KW coilover set. Very very good ride. I also added a set of Eibach front and rear anti roll bars, plus a front and rear Eibach strut tower stiffeners. Forget EBC green stuff etc. Use some propper Ferrodo DS2500 brake pads front and rear, and you can beat on the good brakes all day without a hint. On track, you want bigger brakes as the heat up slower. Ther is absolutely no rust in mine, apart fron a little buble just below the rubber rear window seal. I'll fix that. I installed Powerflex bushings all over and it helps. It's a firm ride. An dit grips. Cornering is really up there with the really good modern cars, but powerwise it havea bit of difficulty in transferring the power to the asphalt. Some do a 4wd mod here and it solves that I didn't I keep it light instead. While the Corrado can be lowered and looks better, don't lower it too much as the front track arms get a wrong angle and you loose grip and get funny cornering. Mine is lowered 40mm and works well. I also recommend to get a special aluminium stiffening bar between the front track arms, as it keeps the front track correct at all times - better grip - more cornering speed ;) Regarding the alternative airfilter that you have, just don't use it. It makes less power adn sucks up warm air without propper isolation and cold air from the front. I measurd 5 Hp less on a new stock K&N so threw it out. And it allows certain particles to come intot the G-lader and sand it down. Not good. Just don't use them. Change the servo oil every two years, and it lasts eternally. But change the steering ball joints and front track arm ball joints every 5 years, and you get perfect steering. The exhaust hanger rubbers break easily and takes 10 minutes to swap to polyurethane ones from Powerflex - no more problems. On the G60 there are two temp sensors on trh front of the block, and if the due to age or now changing coolant every two years (ONLY VW red fluid + ½ destilled water), they can get stuck and raise idle to say 1400-1500 rpm. Change these two sensors and you are good foir another 20 years. The door locks and door mecs last very wellbut change the grafs (knob that the door locks catches on to when closing the doors), every now and then. Cheap and easy, but DON't take both bolts out at the same time!!! The two big rubber thingies on the roof, alson the side of the car, can become hardened and grey. New ones are available and easy to renew yourself. In fact the Corrado is like the Golf 2, a Lego kit... So easy ;) Afaik, there were 50 cars with leather hand brake and leather door handles made. I have those on mine. Well, it's not leather, but leatherette, a type of stitched plastice that resembles real leather. My Recaro seats are all leather plus door sides. I have an extra set of original bolster foams ready when the times comes, but they last well, just DON'T sit on them. Can very rarely be found on the web or at Classic parts (see below). VW North America made a really thick well described THICK paper manual for the Corrado. Worth having. Some late VR6 2,9 gor thicker carpeting. As VW have changed their support of the old cars, such as the Corrado, they stock very little. And what you cannot get from Germany, get it from VW Classic Parts. NEVER add a smaller belt wheel on the G-lader. It makes it spin too fast and die. If you keep it stock and ALWAYS renew all seals and the augenvelle (a special bearing in the G-lader) every 75,000 Km, it lasts perfectly. No worries. Also remember to renew the little internal belt on the G-lader udner the little cover. ONLY get HIGH QUALITY belt tensioners and Belt bearings!!! Who gives a shit about straight line acceleration, it's curvy hilly backroads that counts! And there the Corrado really comes into play and shines. The problem with these handbuilt special made rare cars (91.000 in total) all made by Karmann in Osnabrück in Germany, NOT VW, is that they fell in price on the used market, being very sporty, and a lot of youngster hippies who just smash then time after time, got their little hands on them. So, it's rare to find a good one. Luckily it is mendable at a price. Prices have long ago hit the bottom, and they are now rising in value, mostly if the are unmolested and have no rolled wheel arches. Prices in my country is now over 12000-15000 usd for a nice G60. There are usually no trouble with the automatic rising rear spoiler. The US market cars rise earlier than in rest of world. Mine goes up at 120 km/h. The syncros for second gear can if molested enough in acceleration from standing start, become worn and begin to whine. It is not overly expensive to change. Mine uses no oil or water what so ever, after 145000 km. Look up Röttelse Racing in Germany for G-lader parts or even bigr G-laders. The better flowing big Golf2 Rallye front intercooler gives more power. Milage on mine is 15km/L in town and 21,4 km/L on countryside. Giving it the beans makes it down to 10 km/L no matter how hard I drive (as in really hard). Right up there with many of my Lotus club mates in back road driving. Change the suspension strut tower bushings and the engine bushings every 5 years and you're a happy bunny. Oh, and get the much deeper 90mm front bib spoiler, rather than the US slim version. It looks better, and created more downforce. A really rare and great new classic sportscar and take care of it, they are getting expensive.

I had a 92 slc. I had been dreaming of owning one since it was revealed at the autoshow in 1990. I have the brochures from the dealership. Picked up the SLC in 2001 owned it for about 4 yrs. Im a professional mechanic and this thing nickel and dimed me, even when i was getting the parts at cost. What a great car though! Its the type of car you just feel unique when you're behind the wheel. I rarely saw another corrado on the road then and I've only seen two here in s.florida in the past 9 years. It made my heart race seeing the corrado again...this, in a city where ferrari, lambos and mcclarens are EVERYWHERE...these exotics are so common, they are almost as boring as a mustang, charger or corvette (yawn) Ive owned many bmws, saabs, benz and porsches since then. The corrado still has a special place in my heart. I'm buying another one in a few months and I'm SO looking forward it, mechanical issues and all.

Great video! The Corrado is such a fun car to drive. The 2.9L VR6 came with a lot of features/options in Europe like Power steering, Adjustable steering wheel, ABS, AC, Airbags, Cruse control, All leather interior, Heated and electrical seats, Central locking, Power windows, Alloy wheels. Mine has no sunroof, did not know sunroof was standard before I saw this video. As you mentioned it needs some maintenance from time to time and its often not cheap. Would not recommend it if you don't want to get your hands dirty or don't want to spend a little bit of money. And yes, great way to learn mechanical skills.

100% Agreed, it's a DIY owner car, but the reward of the VR6 is worth all of your hours invested. I was lucky to push this one on the highway before returning it. I even got "thumbs up" from another VW owner on the highway. We had roughly 5 hours to get the car, wash and wax it, and then record this video. Erm... the Sunroof was an option. Its just that most people picked it. The wheels are not factory, but off a mk4 golf. (The Corrado only came on 15's stock. Speedlines or optional Brand's Hatch.) Anyways, still a nice video. Not planning on selling my Corrado ever either. The rear spoiler reduced rear end lift by 70-ish% at 120kph (70mph) iirc. A guy in Germany made new roof moldings btw. For the headlights, put in some relays in stead of the original bulbs, and route a new 12v line to that relay to switch the lights. The main current for the lights goes through the light switch, wich causes quite a voltage drop on the lightbulb.

I loved my 2 VW corrados. I had a black VR6 with 17in Momo arrows with neuspeed springs. Awesome car. Ended up selling it after owning for several years. Bought a Jeep Wrangler. Did some 4x4 and rock crawling and got tired of killing my daily driver. So I needed my little race car back. Bought a 93 VR6 Corrado, silver with 17 in wheels. (private ferrin) not sure on the spelling. Had H&R Coilovers, chip and K&N. Nice and clean 👌 14 years ago I sold it for 10k when it only blue booked for 5 or 6 k.....The buyer fley from Cali to buy my BABY....Best car ever, had my silver Rado for 10 years before I sold....I miss her...

So... Flash Red does have clear coat, and the example you showed has the typical peeling clear coat problem on the roof that most red VW's have. Tornado Red is even worse for peeling clear coat. Other than that, spot on mate.

Hi Brendan, that isn't peeling clear on the roof, those marks are results of a perforated tarp that covered the car. I didn't have time to buff out the paint on the roof before we recorded this video. I could only do the hood and sides, since we only had the car for 3 hours. Thanks for watching, have a great day! Great video. I always liked these. It’s too bad Porsche didn’t build this or at least have their own version. It would have really helped them during tough times in the 90s. It would have slotted in well near the 944/968 end of the line up until the Boxter came along.

17 years ago, the Corrado was more expensive still and the '84 944 was only $4k. It was a very fun car to drive. My buddy still has one. The value has reached the upswing point for Porsche's, but there are still some good values out there. Some parts are harder to get, but nothing is impossible to fix. There's a company that still makes a LS1 conversion kit, if you want some American power. Overall, the inline 4 banger won't win you any drag races. However, the car hugs the road and corners well. It's a very enjoyable ride. The turbos do have more power, but I've not driven one, so I can't really say much there.

LOL... I had an SLC back in the day. I didn't do anything to it, but the former owner had a Schrick variable manifold and Schrick cams in it, along with some Neuspeed braces and the like. Reliability wise it was OK, I never had anything major break on it. The starter and the fan relay acted up and had to be replaced but they weren't big dollar items. The VR6 seeped oil but it never leaked bad enough to leave a drop on the ground so I left it alone. Sold it with 115K on it after a number of years an something like 45K miles. I never found the Corrado to be particularly good handling. It was OK but not spectacular -- the Mk2 GTI 16V was more tossable and the FD RX-7 was way more precise. It was also brisk but not spectacular -- DSMs were faster for the same money. The shifter was rubbery and rather imprecise compared to a Civic or Integra as I remembered it. -- I kinda miss the Corrado silhouette and strangely enough I found it in a Cadillac in form of the previous generation CTS Coupe so I had to get one. The CTS-V Coupe was A LOT FASTER though.

Im looking at a 92 for around $7500. Zero rust and a fresh head and gasket. runs great and really clean. thats a lot more than what youre talking about in the video 5 years ago. Is that the ballpark I should be in with one of these? I know there are a lot of variables but at least in the ballpark?

I have a set of 92 Corrado SLC rims the busy BBS ones, what are they worth. Fun car. I actually drag raced a 93. There were two of us in BFE Illinios. Also dropped down with another corrado up to 120 on the interstate once(and beat it too). He didn't pass me either. There was an unwritten rule that no Corrado owner ever allowed another to pass

How much space between the wheel spokes and the brake calipers should I have? I recently installed a set of 16" BBS RX-IIs on my 93 SLC, but the spokes of the rims are extremely close to the brake calipers. Should I install a 3mm spacer on all the wheels or is there enough clearance and I shouldn't worry about it?

Most High performance cars have wheels very close to the calipers. As long as they clear when you spin the wheels, you should be good. No reason they will hit while driving.

@Bill Owen Just helping you out a bit. ' this is a beautiful car" but toying with your MAF is going to cause you trouble for sure. Do you know how an MAF works. Having it dangling like that and it exposed with that shitty cone filter you will see issuses i saw. It sucks in do to more dirt. Those cheap cone filters are shit. This is a fact i can attest to. I replaced three MAFs by toying with that system. Now the smart thing would be to put your lower stockbox back in, then put a K&N factory sized air filter. They dont afford you enough gain for the trouble your going to. I look at your filter it filthy. K&N makes a cleaner. I want another SLC myself. I currently have the MK4 Jetta BDF 24 valve engine that i want to swap into a black corrado. Are you still working on your sunroof/headliner fabric?
