In this video I give you a first look at my recently acquired VW Corrado VR6.
You may have expected me to go and buy a nice example but I did quite the opposite and for good reason, watch and find out why.
Tell me what to do with this car via the comments, all will be read and any good ideas will be considered.

Great buy andrew! I have two corrado,s a 1.8 16v and a g60 but I'd love a VR6 some day .they are great cars if a bit frustrating to find parts for sometimes. Btw the windscreen outer seal is available from vw classic and you can buy the complete 4 piece kit on Ebay ( and it's good quality)

Looks like a solid base for a restomod, at least the boyracers haven't got at it and ruined it. Cheap is to fit led lights to the interior, gets rid of that nasty yellow interior lighting. First mod for me would be to get the wheels refinish in the correct colour. Will look forward to future updates.

Love the Speedlines on these think they’re right up there with some of the best oe VAG wheels. Speedline Challenge 2110 are a good option if you wanted to go bigger. Bit like MK2 Golf’s in that the optional Recaro’s are a great addition really increase the sense of occasion.

Hey Peter, just checked out those wheels and yes they are cool, similar to the OE Speedlines but different. Recaros would be great, I scrapped a Corrado VR6 I got in px a few years ago but kept the leather Recaros for my last Corrado VR6. Will have to look out for some more. 👍

Love it and from a distance looks amazing - as an OEM fan as close as you can get to original will require a fair amount of work but really worth it and can see why you didn’t pass it up as overall so clean. Springs and shocks possibly tired will need replacing and not sure how many suspension bits are interchangeable with a mk3 Golf, from memory a softer set up which suits the relaxed nature of the vr6 power :) looking forward to seeing more of the journey 👍

@volkswizard
@volkswizard 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's engine out as being over the transmission there is a fair bit of room. I did consider colour change but it's much more involved to do it right and the bodyshop would probably say no especially as they are 30 miles from engine shop. Also I quite like the green, shiny and with silver wheels it should look OK

@@volkswizard makes sense, to do it properly would obviously mean a complete strip down - big job :-o, BTW, I'm not anti green coloured cars being the owner of a Mk 1 Golf GTI in Lhasa green, I did look at Corrado's when they were new ish & looked a buying a 3 year old one but it was rusty around the tailgate hinges which I think they did suffer from, hopefully yours is ok in that regard?, keep up the good work Andrew & I really enjoy your content.

Rattles were my bugbear too. Spent ages searching out rattles in my Mk2 Golf GTi. Got them in the end though. Great vid thanks but boy Its got me missing my Mk4 Golf V6 4 motion. Maybe a subtle lowering using standard shocks but a shorter spring. I once fitted new Schnitzer lowering springs on a BMW with excellent results. Car looked nicely lower but ride comfort was not compromised.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Sorry you had the rattles too. The good thing about Corrados is that there is so much info and tried and tested experience with suspension mods so there should be something to suit all tastes. As standard they ride and handle brilliantly but just sit too high, especially the later cars from some reason. Mine is actually quite low so better check it's stock before getting carried away!

That'll be a nice project to see progressing - a bit like your Audi R8 & the 80. Interesting & a bit different, like you said, to all the new cars you've been reviewing lately. Definitely a set of modern suspension parts (I was thinking of Koni FSD dampers for my Mk7 passive GTD, before I decided not to keep it), would hopefully give a great combination of ride & handling on standard height springs. Possibly some good quality brake disc/pads too - not sure what's available, as per upgrades over standard though? If it was me, I'd install full on, high quality ICE , but I don't think that's your thing though🤣🤣. That Jetex exhaust sounds fantastic - sporty, without those crappy pops & crackles - just a nice deep rumble. I actually had a Jetex exhaust many years ago (on - don't laugh - a G plate 1.6 Vauxhall Cavalier L. Probably ended up being worth more than the car🤣). Was nice though, not annoying on a long run. Contrast that to the non resonating Miltek system I remember you having on an Up! GTi you were selling, that exhaust was awful! In short, your Corrado will be absolutely stunning, once it's done - make sure you take us all along on the journey 👍

Bilstein B12 suspension kit is great for the road. 288mm late Mk3 golf front brakes Mk4 rear calipers... And if you can find one, a Teves 20 ABS system from a ‘95 on Mk3 golf is a much better system with four channels instead of just three as standard.

I had a Corrado G60 and then Golf MK5 R32 followed by a Golf MK7 GTI. The Corrado was real fun to drive and maybe a car that still got a very sharp special design. Keep us posted with your project. Great choice and worth the effort.

Head gasket failure I think was due to a poor cooling system but I wonder if new coolant, larger inter cooler n a nice CAI would help. Such old engines now most are thrashed. I had the golf vr6 main issue was brake lines n abs etc

Good luck! Found this vid after watching your previous trip down memory lane in the Blackberry VR you did last year! Best upgrades (unless they've been done): Wipers - stock they are dreadful. You can use Lupo wiper arms or a few other peeps (me inc) used a pair of BWM E30 replacement arms Lights - stock they are dreadful. Fit an uprated loom (buy one or make one, they're easy enough to do) Headlight wiring - PUT IN AN EARTH FUSE! Sorry to shout, but if the headlight switch fails (which they do) full current will pass down the earth cable from the light-switch and can cause a fire, so just put an inline fuse for peace of mind. Get a fire extinguisher! Otherwise have fun with your new purchase - I hope she brings you many years of joy and not too many instances of pulling your hair out! Oh, a personal choice is to lose the orange side repeaters for a smoked one - looks a lot better imvho, the orange really dates the side view

My last VR6 spun a bearing. I was going to rebuild it but in the end put a 24v VR6 from a Golf 4motion in it. It was super smooth and the power was a lot better, especially with a remap. The cost was the same as the rebuild. People have also done it with R32 engines. Food for thought if you want something a bit different. I had mine done by Andy at PSI Tuning near Stoke.

The Corrado is definitely a future classic, really well proportioned and good looking car. Looks stylish and understated in this colour too. Looking forward to this series.

I bet Gareth. Luckily the car doesn’t need much in the way of parts as it’s complete at least but I’m sure there will be a shocking bill for something sometime😬

There is a white 92 Passat GL VR6 with 120k km selling for 4900 euros near me in Brussels. I'm hesitating to buy it... I already have a 89 Passat GT 16s in red in Portugal (it was my dad's) but the VR6 rumble is calling for me 😁😁😁

I owned a 2L 16V many moons ago and unfortunately it was the worst car that I've ever owned. I wish some one had warned me about the sunroofs! because I just read the magazine reviews and that was never mentioned. This one looks to have original front wings going by the panel gap between door & wing? I shall be watching this with interest to see how much it costs etc and will try to limit any negative comment, as I realise that most of the rest of you are enthusiasts!
