I think the best deal I ever got on eBay was a custodes lot. -7 jet bikes, and 1 highly Kitbashed jet bike. All of which were on metal screw on stands. - seven custodian guard, four of which had storm shields and swords. - And one overpainted trajann valoris. There's too much paint, so some of the details were lost. But as soon as I get around to stripping him, that should fix all the issues (I think whoever had him first was trying a new painting style. It doesn't actually look how bad. They just use too much paint to do it). $120 To give people who don't play custodes and idea of what that's worth. That's two boxes of custodes on jet bikes. Each box only has three models. 😶

_05:54__ Think you might have mentioned it, but some Buy-It-Now listings have Make An Offer attached. The buyer MAY have put a minimum figure that they would accept and allow eBay's systems to just reject anything below. Could be worth testing those with what you think is a reasonable offer to make. If successful everyone wins. Also means you don't have to get into a dialogue with the seller and you save time, and can move on quickly if unsuccessful_

Generally, older sculpts should command a nice discount over new ones, but I see lots of eBay sellers asking dumb prices for old Citadel pewter and plastic. If the sculpt has recently been replaced by a newer one, I would expect at least a 25% discount, if not 40-50% compared to the new sculpt.

If you're in Canada, check out Kijiji. Usually if you're willing to buy a whole army you'll get a great deal, and though it's meant for in person purchases, I've found that almost everyone is willing to mail them out if you're not willing to do that, assuming you're buying enough to justify it. It's often people trying to unload their whole army or collection at a very fair price, better than what you'd find on ebay.

There are a few problems I have found the last couple months with Ebay. People drive up the price quickly, days before the listing is even finished. This drives me nuts. Why? If you are patient and wait you could get it for far cheaper. Sure you have to have the bidding war at the last few seconds, but so what? I mean sure , if it were the day of the auction ending, make a bid and walk away. Not 6 days before the end. 9/10 times If you bid that early, you weren't actually trying to win it, just screw others over. (sometimes I think it could be the seller on a different account driving up the price). People putting NIB models up that are not OOP way over MSRP. Why? GW is selling that for 40 dollars less. Stop it. Astronomical shipping prices. I see 20+ for shipping, I'm not going to bother unless I can get it for at least 2/5th the msrp. Bots. Oh gawd, bots.

We have a good habit of buying models for each other so we have new stuff to fight along with keeping the game alive. I highly suggest eBay and Facebook pages for buying used models. Sometimes you'll even find models painted to the army you run. If not, a little Acetone and primer resets everything for me. Good Video.

I have a bunch of army lots I picked up on ebay, and I have to say, it's a LOT of work to repair them when you expect to get them to like-new condition as you would from a fresh kit. If you value your time, often it is NOT less expensive to get used stuff, because you will spend a lot of time fixing stuff and finding missing parts. Especially if the models belonged to a little kid... then you get a lot of stuff like dudes with two pistols that aren't valid gear selections, along with caked on paint. I happen to also be into making molds and pressure casting stuff, and 3d printing in resin, so it's usually not too bad to make the missing parts if I have another model around to copy or print, but it's also a real pain when vehicles are assembled wrong, glued shut in ways you don't want, or the previous owner primed them with the wrong kind of paint, like automotive primer that basically won't come off with stripping, or if it does, crazed the plastic. For more uncommon models like characters it's pretty frustrating to end up with broken and missing parts... for rank and file guys it's a lot easier to come up with parts that match. The best deals I have found were not on ebay... it was Craigslist with a local person getting out of the hobby and wanting to recover a few dollars, and random finds at local thrifts stores, where the thrift store didn't know what they had and just bagged it up next to kid's army men. (found $300 worth of random space marines and tyranids in a baggie for $6 once, and paid $15 for two well painted land raiders, albeit missing all the guns....) Anyway, finding someone getting out of the hobby who wants to unload their stuff for some cost recovery is ideal because more than likely, if they actually cared about the hobby, their stuff will be in decent condition and at least playable or close to playable as is. That said, an ebay lot of something like space marines can be a good way to bulk out a starter collection inexpensively, when you are still learning how to build models and don't know what is good. It's also useful to pounce on whatever army sucks the most currently or recently got nerfed in a new edition or has not been updated in years, as those models tend to skyrocket in value once they do get a rules update that makes them fun again. (assuming you are interested in playing them). But these lots tend to be collections of random, inefficient models, usually older ones with poor choices for weapons, and usually glued rather than magnetized...it's quite easy to get lots with 60 tactical marines, and once you have 60, it's rather difficult to fit more than that into any reasonably sized list, and they aren't the best unit choice either. Still... if you can pick up an older army for $100 or so, you can be pretty cavalier and fearless about learning to paint on them. It's quite freeing, really, to have no fear of screwing up an expensive model kit....it just is that you usually have to do an absolute ton of work to get them prepared to paint; way, way more than building a new kit.

These are all great tips, the great thing Mr AT is that the great majority won't make the effort to search out potential bargains.I have done this with historical figures but as you say and from my experience, there is a far greater demand for 40K and for some reason 40K holds its value better and it is far easier to get a nice profit. You can often get nice savings on the starter packs where some models have been built or undercoated.
