you have helped in the past . I have a pentair thermalflo 900 pool heater and when it starts to kick on after the 5;00 minute count down it trips the breaker in side the house. what could that be.

Brian C Hi Brian. I'm assuming that when the breaker trips, your pump turns off...is that true? Or do you have a separate breaker for your heater. Does the breaker trip after 5 min without your heater being turned on? When the breaker trips, does the pump shut off, or just the heater? (I sort of asked the same question two different ways, but it's important if the breaker is tripping with just the heater turned on, AND if only the heater is shutting off, or both).

lucyspools yes the pump turns off. and heater....and trips the breaker in the house. i know there is also a subpanel outside near the heat/pump that also has breaker but those dont trip.

Brian C Sorry to drag this out, but does your pump trip the breaker by itself, i.e. without having the heater on? I'm just trying to isolate the issue. Inside of most motors, there is a thermal heat protector that will shut the pump down (trip the breaker) if motor gets overheated. The age of the pump; the heater; if both the heater and pump are on the same breaker the amperage must surpass the combined amps. A lot to consider. Bottom line, it's not a good sign if the breaker is tripping, but it may be the motor...not the heater. Unless the transformer in the heater is going bad. I wish I could narrow it down for you. You may have to bring in an electrician that understands pool equipment. (When the pump turns off, the heater will automatically turn off...the heater cannot work without the pump because the pressure switch inside the heater is what gets the ball rolling for the heater to turn on). Let me ask you this...if you turn the pump on WITHOUT turning heater on, does the breaker trip after 5 minutes? Sorry, but without testing the lines, it's very difficult to say what the culprit is. I mean, you could have a bad breaker...or a wire may be loose coming out of the breaker. I wish I could be more specific, I'm trying to tell you all the things you need to look for. Let me know if it's any of these things, or give me more information. I don't mind troubleshooting...but the lines may have to be tested with a meter.
