Guilty of this. Im always ruminating. Lots of fucked up embarassing shit in my mind that i relive constantly and it brings my mood all the way down and i get anxiety. Currently reading the power of now to help me and just get thru life in general with peace and a clear mind.

Why is it tho when you in the present moments that's when thoughts persist the hardest to gain your attention you have repeated this bit a gazillion times but mehn its pretty intense to give up control

Try focusing your attention elsewhere. Anywhere else. The sky, your breath, behind your closed eyelids, tv, out the window, to your right, to your left. Anywhere. And notice that you ARE the attention and You can choose to focus your Self anywhere you please. It's that simple. Just takes practice to get used to it.

Normally we are always being guided and controlled by our thoughts, but the difference is that when you decide to be in the present moment, you are more sensitive to perceiving the control of thoughts over you.

Unwanted thoughts arise from an unfocused mind, a mind that is unconscious of the “here and now”. Watch your own minds: when do unwanted thoughts emerge and proliferate? When your mind is “drifting”, not focussed at all. What happens when you are focussed on, say, an activity that has absorbed your attention? Unwanted thoughts don’t arise. The advice to focus on the “here and now” works simply because you have provided an object of attention for your mind to examine. While it is busy examining, it is not generating unwanted thoughts. Stop focussing on the here and now simply means that you have become unconscious of the present and it is this which allows thoughts to arise.

I have unknowingly trained myself to do the opposite I don't want to be in this moment alot! so i exist in my own head.. and sometimes I can't even hear what other people are saying because I'm too wrapped up in my own thoughts.. I don't really know how to relax at all anymore sheer exhaustion seems to be about the only safe bet..
