I've got Tolumnias under grow light, and they like it much better here than they did on eastern windowsill. Or maybe that's because they're in a glass cabinet, which tends to be bit more warm and humid than rest of the room. Either way, they're great! You're the one that made me buy them, and I'm so grateful. They're so cute in person, and the blooms are just

Hi Danny! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us! I only have 4 orchids but that's from a lack of space...2 phals that are blooming, a vanda I just took the leap and potted and my little tolumnia jairak firm 'orange spread' that my husband let me get for Christmas! They give me so much joy! I've spread your youtube name all over the place cause you've always had good advice! Thank you so much from central Texas, USA.

Such a timely video. I am in Bangalore, India and had tolumnias mounted on wood. Though they were growing great with new shoots, it was just not blooming. I believe its lack of humidity or water.. anyhow i removed them from mount and moved them to pots. Fingers crossed this works for them.

I’ve tried growing them in small pots in my living room in the Netherlands. Unfortunately the winter humidity is too low, and the daytime temperature is between 18-21 C which is slightly too low. The medium stays too wet too long and causes the roots to rot. Now I have them without medium in plastic pots and let them dry out before watering again. Works better for me.

Awesome, thanks for a new guide on Tolumnias. Been looking forward to it. I have two purchased a few months ago that have been flowering since. They’re potted in what looks like a gravel medium but plan to convert to bark n spag after flowering. Rest of my orchids are in bark n spag moss because I also live in hot dry or wet summer but cold dry winter climate. I just hope they won’t set back too much when I convert from different potting medium 🤞

Thank you for covering Tolumnia orchids. I just purchased 4 seedling plants from a local orchid event and they came bare rooted in tiny plastic baskets. I added a bit of sphagnum moss to each basket, and they are hanging upside down in a SW window. I mist the roots every day and soak them about once a week. I am thinking about putting them in clay pots, and your information is helpful. I am in the USA (Ohio) and grow my small collection in my plant room.

Hi Danny have a tale of an oncidium my heaven scent who btw is in bloom now with two spikes. This guy which when was purchased was a fairly large orchid and consistently has given a terrific show of flowers. Yeah if you find it in store, buy it !!! Anyways a back bulb was getting discolored wrinkly and looking old so I decided to cut off. But instead of discarding wondered what if I soaked it in spagnum moss ? To my surprise pushed out a keiki with roots before swivelling away. Keiki is doing well on a window sill and hopefully will push new ones eventually, a new orchid in its own.

I live in New Jersey and it’s pretty humid most of the year so I have to grow all of my “drier” orchids like tolumina, encyclica, etc in just plain lecca and I mist and water it as needed. They roots rot so easily for me but since lecca holds water it works pretty well for me. I don’t mean semi hydro. I let it dry and water it just like any other orchid. I’ve noticed too much moss stays wet too long in my area.

@@stephaniesands119 yeah even though I have to water more often with just lecca it definitely helps prevent root rot for me. The rest I grow in a mix of lecca and moss instead of bark. It stays airy and lasts longer since its mostly inorganic.
@JEcklar
@JEcklar 3 жыл бұрын
Tolumnia are my favorite! 😁 I grow under lights, and it seems to suit them just fine. Like Nick, I also grow in leca so they can drain fast and get lots of air. I've found it works nicely to plant the tolumnia in a basket in leca, but then to put the basket into a slightly larger clay pot, with the space between the basket and the sides of the pot filled with sphagnum. That way, the leca lets water run through, but the sphagnum keeps the local humidity around the basket high. The plants seem to be liking it so far!
@nickgemerek6820
@nickgemerek6820 3 жыл бұрын
@@JEcklar That's a good idea. I've thought about putting some moss in the pots with just leca but I've had so much root rot issues that I'd rather water twice a day for now until they get better but some are really bouncing back with just leca. I also use distilled water with pH down with all of my orchids. It's somewhere between 5-6 ish since leca tends to raise the pH according to some sites just another fun fact that I do haha. But all the rest of my orchids are a mix of moss and leca instead of bark.

Hello, Danny! I'm a beginner orchid enthusiast and found myself in lack of information about one orchid. Sorry for poor grammar😅 Several days ago I absolutely fell in love with this hybrid, Dendrobium Hibiki, found it on the exhibition, bought a good healthy one, but found zero to no specific information about how to care for it, besides the basic dendrobium care... And in one of your videos (Orchids in Bloom - August 2020) Dendrobium Hibiki made one and only appearance, which I specifically searched hoping you had one, just to gather some care tips from you (because I trust your knowledge and learned a ton from your videos), but back then you said you only got that one as a new plant and didn't know exactly how it'd do. Hope it won't bother you too much and is ok if I ask, what experience do you have with Dendrobium Hibiki? Is it still in your collection and how does it feel? And, does it really need a winter rest? And if someone can share some care tips I'd be very grateful! Thank you in advance!
