Wow love it. Great orchard. I love avocados, who doesn't. Im trying to grow one in a container. Wish me luck. I moved it and ot got sunburn. So I had to move it to the shade and it loves it. Do a series on the seedling. Thats awesome! Keep up the good work.

This is really interesting. How you can keep track of your varieties like you do is mind boggling. I know I can't grow avacados here but it is fascinating to learn so much about them. You and your family have a great weekend👍

I live in Chula Vista. And my wife thinks I am obsessed with growing citrus and avocado trees. I have 5 avocado trees and seeing your video, ill be getting another Lamb Hass soon. We should meet sometime and possibly trade budwood. Great video

Will Thomas my wife thinks I’m obsessed with growing everything but I keep telling her it’s an investment that will pay off soon! I would definitely like to meet you! If u want to get a lamb Hass there’s a bad ass nursery in fallbrook, they have many different varieties and you get wholesale prices! $25 for a 5 gallon size. Hit me up and I can show you the nursery, it’s kinda hard to find. 6194545996 I’m in Northern California right now but I’ll be back on Tuesday.
@socalbackyardgardener6 жыл бұрын
Would that be Maddock Nursery? I planned on getting it there. I bought a large 24 Gallon HASS there last year for $150! Most of there 24’s cost $250 but this one had fallen over and a few broken branches. Great deal. I got over 100 avocados from that tree this year

Cool ‘llI hit you up.. im at 619-398-6005. I have a guy From the fruit forum coming over on Tuesday to get a scion from my Reed. He is bringing a Gwen and Sir Prize scion and showing me his almost 100% sucess rate grafting method.

Will Thomas yeah! Maddock! You can definitely get good deals there especially if you bring them beer! I don’t buy larger trees because I’m too lazy to dig the holes, ha ha!

Great video so cal alot of good advice.. thanks. I have an issue with my avocado tree hoping you can help me out with. Have you ever heard of crick side avocado? I wish I can show you a picture, after all a picture is a thousand words. But I'll try to describe it as best I can. the fruit on this tree has a thumb-sized black depression between the stem and the fat part of the avocado and where the stem meets the fruit it turns a rusty color than the fruit drops. The tree had about 30 golf ball sized avocado on it and it's now down to three. I'm following a watering program from this guy named Greg elder I don't know if you heard of themso the tree appears to be doing very well the leaves are very dark green and glossy showing no signs of water stress but it's dropping all its fruit. I planted this tree back in November and it came out of a 15 gallon pot it was about 6 ft tall. Oh yeah and it's also putting out New growth like crazy new shoots are popping up all over the tree..I guess what I want to know bro is if I'm doing something to cause this tree to drop its avocados or it's some kind of natural process that you encountered or something like.

Wow - very nice cado selection ! Your seedling looks like it’s on steroids - i’d like to compare its growth characteristics to another ? Zutano . I’m in a early 60s residential track home North of You maybe 1 1/2 hours. I managed to have a mature Hass and last May planted a Holiday. I would love to squeeze a Reed in the mix too ... there is nothing quite like the shade from Avocado trees !

Very informative video.I planted an avocado tree 5 years ago and it's not flowering yet ,any ideas why this is so?
@socalbackyardorchard37686 жыл бұрын
Mr super T A grafted avocado should flower in about 3 years, if it’s a seedling not grafted it can take 5 to 10 years to produce fruit sometimes longer. If it’s a seedling regular feedings with organic fertilizers horse manure worm castings fish emulsion and regular watering will help it grow faster and flower closer to the 5 year mark. My dad has several seedling avocado trees that started producing in 5 years probably because he gives them lots of TLC

I am seriously considering getting a Lamb Hass because l have limited space . From all that l have read it appears to be an excellent avocado. You say it is your favorite avocado. The best avocado l have tasted is Hass. In your opinion how does Lamb Hass compare in terms of taste? Thanks for a very informative video.

So Cal backyard orchard that sounds great. We’re just getting started but we have so many trees planted over the past year. We are looking forward to doing the same. We’re getting so many blossoms and I hope it translates into fruit. We plan on giving to family and neighbors if we are lucky enough to get that much this year.

I don't know what variety my two trees are. I grew them from seed about 3 years ago I think, they're about 12 feet tall now. Is it safe to top prune it so it doesn't grow any taller?

How come I don't have any luck in planting avocado here in my place in San Diego. They always die on me after a year. Can you tell me where did you buy these trees? I planted 5 avocados for the past 7 years and they all died. Maybe home depot where I'm getting my avocado trees sucks.
@richardmang25585 жыл бұрын
At about 10 minutes in the video he talks about some good points for planting an avocado to ensure it lives. Also in San Diego we get alot of water from the Colorado river which has a high salinity level, avos cannot tolerate salt so if your leaves start browning at the tips and then dry up completely it is probably due to high levels of salt in your water. Another major problem here is gophers, they love to eat avo roots so protect the new trees roots with "Gopher Guard" by Digger's. But only use their "tree" size because the chicken wire used for the "tree" size is different than the chicken wire used for all of their smaller "bush" sizes they make. The smaller size Gopher Guard is made with woven and THEN hot dip galvanized chicken wire which lasts for decades of protection, which is excellent for small bushes. This will eventually girdle the roots of a tree and kill it. The "tree" size uses hot dip galvanized wire which is THEN woven into chicken wire, they use this different type to ensure the wire rusts and breaks down after a few years, allowing the roots to grow in diameter without being girdled and killed. If you go to the Digger's website they explain this, unfortunately this is not written on the labels of their "bush" Gopher Guard product, it is written on their "tree" size product. But the local hardware store only carries the "bush" sizes so we as the consumer buy the wrong size and use it for the wrong application which eventually kills our trees. I have dug up some of my dead trees to find a beautiful well preserved "bush" size Gopher Guard with the strangled roots of my tree stuck in the chicken wire. So don't use the wrong size. I have to order the "tree" size online and have it shipped to me, I order mine from GrowOrganic.com but there are many other sources available. The same can be said for using galvanized hardware cloth to protect your roots, it is a death sentence for your tree.If you have water that is high in salinity I would suggest planting macadamia trees instead. Most people would love to trade some of their avos for your macadamias! Macadamias are beautiful long lived, evergreen trees with wonderful flowers! They are also wildfire resistant and if the water is ever shut off to them they will survive fine and just stop producing nuts. They grow well in San Diego county.

Nice trees. Can you tell me, What varieties do cold hardy avocado trees come in? I just planted a Layla avocado and it's getting new growth. They say they can withstand 20° I'm still going to cover it this winter since it's just starting out. But I'm looking for a another cold hardy variety so I can cross-pollinate and get more avocados.
@socalbackyardorchard37686 жыл бұрын
Marsha Balderrama Thank you! My first choice for cold hardy is Mexicola others are Brogdon, Ettinger, Gainesville and winter mexican.

Marsha Balderrama I use the fish kelp once a week, when the trees are flowering and setting fruit. I should do it all throughout the growing season but sometimes I just don’t have time.
