I carried a CRKT M21 for years and thought it was good to go. I used the knife extensively and found opening and employing it to be quick and fluid. Then I watched some videos that got me thinking. If you are using a knife for self defense, you are at grappling range, like a fight inside a bathroom stall or an elevator. If it is defense, you are reacting, so your assailant likely already has a weapon. So I had a friend grapple with me with a plastic spoon in one hand as I tried to keep from get hit by the spoon as I drew my pocket knife. I couldn't do it. As fast and intuitive as I thought that knife was, as comfortable as I was with it, I could not get it out of my pocket and open while in contact with someone who was trying to "kill" me. I switched to a small fixed blade. Right now my current favorite is the TOPS HOG 4.5. A fixed blade is just so much faster to get into the fight. "Self defense folder" or " tactical folder" is an oxymoron. Springs and hinges wear. They fill with pocket lint, keys, and debris. If you think you're going to be able to catch a little flipper or something, while someone is actively trying to kill you, you're probably wrong. Trying to move a folder around in your hand, do your little wrist roll or whatever you need to do to get the inertia to open the blade is going to be nearly impossible. Fumbling with a little safety switch or trying to find a button while simultaneously preventing yourself from being stabbed or shot means you're probably going to look stupid, then die. Your opponent is not going to allow you to do any of that shit. With a fixed blade, you don't have to. Caveman grip that handle, rip it from the sheath, and keep the front towards the enemy is all you need to do. No springs, hinges, buttons, levers, or switches. No rolly-wrist thingy or flicky do-dad you need to remember. If you're carrying a knife for self defense, and I think you should, it needs to be a fixed blade, and it needs to be where you can reach it, under duress, while trying not to die.

Been carrying a knife daily since I was 12. So 20+ years. Even my school years allowed knife carry. For years it was a pocket knife typically waved clipped in pocket or a swing blade in my jean coin pocket. About 10 years ago I switched to a 1-7 Blackjack on my right hip 95% of the time combined with a 3.5 inch bark River fixed blade horizontally at about 11oclock 100% of the time. But I'm a small town country boy and my state allows open carry of any knife and concealed carry of any knife under 3.5 inch. Never had any issues🤷♂️ and couldn't imagine not carrying a knife at all times. Always have as have my grandfather and father. It's tradition in a way.

Killer video Brother! The basics is what I needed to see. Never had a Dad or big brother who would teach me any of this crucial info. And I do know that learning weaponry & self-defense from movies or the idiot-box is a lesson in futility. Even with that being said, I’ve always liked carrying a blade. Now with my NW hometown city in shambles & crime-ridden, I’m constantly alert & always aware of my surroundings. At this point, I don’t believe it’s a matter of “if” I’ll need to use self-defense skills to protect myself, but “when” I’ll need to use them. Saying all that, to say that your videos are like gold to me and every bit of info I collect from them is priceless. I believe one day they will help me save my life or property and/or someone’s life that I care about. Keep ‘em coming! Much gratitude for sharing your professional experience & invaluable knowledge. Listen to this man, he knows what he's talking about. I've been telling people for years, folding knives are NOT for defense. Even well made folders can fold unintentionally if only a moderate amount of pressure is applied to the back. Trust me, I have the scars to prove it. Plus, you generally cannot have a double edge on a folder. For defense nothing beats a fixed blade; grab, pull, ready. And as he said, fixed blades aren't actually that hard to carry. Even in a tank top I carry a medium sized fixed blade and people are none the wiser because the handle is the same thickness as the blade. Keep up the good work brother!
@christopherm9032 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that its very difficult to have a frame lock fail on you as you grip the knife. The grip in itself prevents the lock from failing. I wont say 100% of the time, because everyone knows that nothing is 100%. But yes, everyone should know that fixed blades are always stronger and there are no moving parts to fail. A lot of municipalities prevent the carrying concealed fixed blades, not to mention a double sided blade. A happy compromise is the modern folding knife. Many of which can be brought into action just as fast as a fixed blade, even with diminishing fine motor skills. As with anything, practice does indeed make perfect.

Awesome video! I have never been in a self defense situation where I needed a weapon during a flight or fight response. That being said, I have been around livestock all of my life. Hay bales have been tied with twine here for over 30 years. So getting a knife out and open, cutting the bales open, getting the knife folded up and put back into a pocket and then grabbing a pitchfork to feed the bale all while 60 head of cows are pushing, shoving and kicking is quite a dance. No they are not trying to kill me but it keeps your senses in tune. I like something with about a 4" blade so when I drop it, and I have have, it is easier to find later. I have a Benchmade knife with a type of rubber grip that is orange. I bought specifically for those features. It didn't help. Rubber grip makes it difficult to get back in smoothly and it caught my flannel shirt. I knew this but I had to move. Next bale it was gone. I routinely carry 3 knives. I had to use my Buck knife from my belt holster which is harder to open and has to be snapped in but it works. And despite being orange I couldn't find my Benchmade that day. I did find it 2 weeks later by the sun glistening off the rubbed shinny clip. It was barely visible but I got it back. But under the pressure I have I guess I lose some fine motor skills especially when hands are freezing cold. I hope that I never need to use a tool, or weapon, in self defense but should I need to, I hope my daily use helps me with some type of muscle memory to get it out quickly and smoothly. Thank you for your insight. The more aware I get, the world seems to be a scarier place.

As a retired LEO, one issue that is very rarely addressed is when the knife can actually be used for self defense. All my years of serving on the PD common day simple assaults were very common. But armed assaults with bladed weapons were definitely not as often. Another factor is what type of assault occured. If it was a simple assault, unarmed, then using deadly force would probably not be warranted. But if it progresses to possible serious injuries or even deadly, then the force might be warranted. My point is to use a knife, for self protection, will probably be a rare occasion. For my usage, i carry a 1980's lock back SOG folder, 3.5 inch blade and 4.5 inch body allowing the steel ends to extend far enough to be used for blunt force striking. That is why It is heavy with a thick rubberized handle, stainless steel body and thick blade. A flick is used to deploy the blade. I carried it on duty for over 30 years and still do as a civilian. The condition is still like new. When i carry it, in a safe and secure environment, it is in my front pocket. But in questionable locations, i hold it in my strong hand blade closed to be used if the situation requires. This manner of carry causes no hinderance. But if things go south i am able to quickly snap open the blade being i am holding it. Something to remember when carrying a knife for self defense, don't let the misuse of it, turn into a lifetime of misery for you.

@johna62912 жыл бұрын
Certainly legitimate points about folding vs fixed knives in terms of tactical operation. But I remember seeing a police display at a knife show that showcased the knives used in violent crimes, and most of them were folders... and very cheap ones too. Most of them were beaten to hell and back. It made me think about the sad fact that humans are very vulnerable creatures to a sharp pointed edge.. or even something rounded and tapered, like a screwdriver... @@BoneTactical No problem Greg. You know I mentioned to you in a previous email I collect unique knives, and things. The collection gets more interesting with BT knives. My friends are impressed. Im replying to you so that others who are on the fence can make a decision. Otherwise I’m just preaching to the choir so to speak. Of course I have most of the bonebreaker collection and I’m working on the shirts which by the way look great on me. I’m starting to eyeball that knife you started with in this video. It’s almost like a mini bayonet. You were able to completely cover it with the El Sicario shirt even when worn OWB. I never considered wearing a fixed blade until I started with the CANK. They looked too big for edc until I bought one. Prior to that I always carried a Spyderco or OTF. When holding a BT knife it just feels like a weapon, something that could save my life if SHTF. Also, I never realized that it’s easier for me to conceal carry the CANK than to hide a clip on “tactical folder.” The difference is the thickness. The folder is more 2x as thick as a BT fixed blade even with the sheath. This difference makes fixed blade more comfortable especially for a bigger guy like me. People will realize this if they’d just buy one already. Get a knife and a Sicario shirt. It’ll all make sense after that. You probably don’t know that I also have two more shirts on their way, scheduled delivery on Monday. I’m collecting all the shirt and long sleeve versions. Then I’m set for any season. To anyone out there who doubts BT just look at all the free videos that Greg puts out. You get more than a knife, edc item or shirt when buying from BT. Be careful though, cause once you buy something from BT you’ll want more. A side note…I’m not an employee of, nor am I compensated by BT in any way. I just appreciate a business owner who develops/builds superior products. This guy is so confident that he knows he makes the “best” edc/self defense/hard-use knives in the world. Who else do you know who does that? Then he backs up his products with free educational videos. You know what I mean otherwise you wouldn’t be watching his KZbin channel. I officially retire from military service at end of April. I’ve been around and know the difference between the promised “mil-spec” quality that other knife brands boast. I have a lot of those. They are in a moving box somewhere in my basement. Most are cheaply made mass produced items that aren’t what is really meant by “mil-spec.” The solid knives and gear that BT sells are what I consider “mil-spec.” Come on take a chance start with a CANK, bone breaker or Kogatana just to get your feet wet. You’ll all see what I’m talking about then. If you order the CANK I recommend getting the leather sheath too. I covered it, soaked in Hubbards shoe grease over night before using it. It feels like a soft catcher’s glove now and fits nicely when I wear the CANK scout carry on my belt. I’m going to sleep now, got a 0430 wake up.

I've been carrying a self-defense knife for years and everything you're saying is SPOT ON ! Can't wait to get my hands on more of your knives. However, just one thing : have you ever tried the Fox Knives using the "Emerson Wave" patented opening system ? (like the Fox 479 Karambit) Basically, they always open (if they're carried properly), so it's almost the same benefits as a fixed blade knife but as a folder. I did more than 1000 draws with it (including under stress) and it never failed. I'm curious to know what you think about those, seems like a good alternative (even though a fixed blade Karambit like yours would be better for the efficiency part, maybe not the ease of cary part).

If your only option is a folding knife, I would get a simple spring assisted flipper tab. Very easy to open. Again, a fixed blade will still be your best option; though i disagree with Bone Tactical on the karambit style blade unless you have a lot of training.

What's up brother, I get it... I totally get it, of course you don't recommend a folding knife, as Bone tactical doesn't sell folding knives.. Unfortunately I have to disagree... first ...the most effective self-defense tool is the one youll carry.. for a lot of dust that is a folding knife.... the folding knives out today are extremely strong dependable quick deploying... a good Out The Front Knife is extremely dependable , fast and because of the mechanism it can be double-edged.. Personally I carry a folding knife, quite often I am in gang-infested , sketchy areas, and when I am there I have a cold steel xL Espada.... there are a few reason why I carry a folding knife.. one because I'm an ex-felon it cannot legally carry a gun, 2.. I don't call the cops so I don't rely on them to protect me, 3. Because I live in California, and California law is any fixed blade no matter the size cannot be concealed, and any folding knife regardless of size can be concealed... you love you videos I've been here from the start

Been carrying a knife since I was 9 daily. When I was 7 my dad gave me a knife after he taught me to sharpen knives but he only let me carry on weekends. I still carry knives along with my concealed carry. I am 66 and in a wheelchair. I prefer fixed blades and I love knives wit the finger hole at the pommel. I also carry a neck knife and have a heavy folder on my chair.

Informative video, I have a dozen or so knives, folding and fixed. Always carry, usually two. In folding usually a 3 inch trapper or stockman for the pocket and a 5 1/2 inch fixed in the waistband. Tried many fixed blades over the years but always come back to my Western W77 5 1/2 in. Dagger for defense with original clip sheath. Bought in the PX in Da Nang. The clip sheath slips descreatly inside my waistband at the belly or forward of my hipbone crossdraw or strong side with light clothing or clipped in my hip pocket with heavier clothing. Just as important as carrying a defensive weapon....situational awareness is paramount. Better to extricate yourself before situation turns confrontational, but if not possible,know the limits of your weapon of choice and train with it before it's needed.

You must know why you carry a knife,then decide what type you need. Folders of any kind are work knives,they require preparation to use,it is folded for areason,to take less space since it is not used too often. Fixed blades are meant to be open carry,and quick use,be it for work or defense. Kukry under two layers of winter clothes is useless,you are better of with larger folder in front pocket. Military carry fixed blade up and front for easy and fast use. If you take a K-Bar like that into a shop you will get many sideglances 😁

He’ll also admit, amongst friends, that his knives are now made in China’s cheapest factories garbage but if he’s not ashamed to say it, it’s because that’s why he’s filthy stinking rich. He’s had outstanding success at doing exactly what he set out to do. Building a massive company producing nothing but sensational media content and duping the ignorant into buying his once halfway decent but now poorly made mass produced chocolate ice cream 💩knives… I’m glad you survived a dog attack, had it been someone with a bone tactical knife out to get you instead of a poor canine… you wouldn’t be here to leave these foolish comments. Your level and style/preference (how to strike or defend)of fighting is going to determine the style of knife you want to hold in combat. This guy seems really cool but the bit about pocket knives is outrageous. Everybody has their flaws but that's crazy to me my man. I used to and still can draw knife pull blade and flip it in my hand and act like I'm stabbing my friend tappin him with the handle(equal barely younger brother) I was so fast he was always scared. The point is that you are as fast as you train to be. At the end of the day you only need so much blade if you know what your doing. If you talking demographic and genre specific I hear what it sounds like your kinda spewing but the maybe the weird thing about someone's cool dad. Pocket knife is the best besides a big side carry or machete
