It doesn't matter. You can catch turtles on any live bait. I've caught them on chicken meat, gizzards, livers. Hot dogs, worms, bacon, shrimp. Turtles LOVE baitfish and shrimp to a lesser degree. You can even use frozen saltwater baitfish or cut bait on freshwater turtles. They like cold salty fish. I don't know why. Btw I have NEVER fished for turtles. They were always by-catch.

Growing up l, we always used gallon milk jugs as a bobber to keep our chicken livers from settling to the bottom of the pond. Snapping turtle is great tasting meat but you just have to keep them alive and in a plastic kiddie pool and feed it chicken feed or coarse ground cornmeal for about a day and a half to clean out their insides prior to reselling, filleting and crockpotting the meat. If we can eat them, they are meant to be hunted. Do you sort animals out of worth? Iis it okay to hunter other mammals like moose and deer, but not reptilians like turtles? Why? those razor sharp beaks/jaws they got is usually what cuts your line guys if you dont want to use birds(sparrows just use good ole chicken in cubed cut about 1/2 to 3/4 inch big you will catch them buggers all day long also use a steel leader and a treble hook were law allows
@mortsnerd51005 жыл бұрын
chris copeland, I hooked one once on an artificial shrimp. I think they would eat just about anything.

"They're kind of mean" What animal with a sharp ass hook in it's mouth would be polite and say, "excuse me kind sir, but I've seemed to have gotten myself caught in some type of a contraption which is causing me excruciating pain. Would you happen to have the remedy for my problem?"
@EM.15 жыл бұрын
@BigJyeTV they eat little ducklings by biting their legs and drowning them before eating them. They prey also wild ducks and geese, but the prey fight trying to fly and is too huge to be taken under water, so the turtles shreds part of the bird body by detaching the legs and in ducks also interior parts, letting the pray/victim to die by agony maybe in days with the wounds full of maggots eating the goose or duck still alive but dying slowly in pain. Snapping turtles are mean by nature.
@EM.15 жыл бұрын
@Liza I agree with you they’re mean and aggressive
@BigJyeTV5 жыл бұрын
@@EM.1 that's not mean, that's just nature. Animals have to kill by any means necessary to survive. For example, a pride of lions TYPICALLY catch and suffocate an animal before eating it, but I've seen a pride basically gutting an animal alive. That's just how nature works, but we're one animal that can choose how we kill animals and can do so swiftly so they don't have to agonize until death.
@EM.15 жыл бұрын
@BigJyeTV but the snapping turtles are classified as infest type of animals, where there are snapping turtles there’s no other waterfowl. They live longer so can reproduce a lot and create overpopulation in the entire wetlands, because when too much in a pond they move to a new lagoon lake near so every place where they live in overpopulation is lifeless except for snapping turtles. By logical reasoning there must be a way to reduce their number, and eating them is a zero waste way. There’s no other animals in this environment, not in the world as you made reference, but here in Northern America continent, that makes the habitats unlivable to every other animal that normally co habit in the same habitat with others different species. Snapping turtles must be controlled and reduced in numbers.
@BigJyeTV5 жыл бұрын
@@EM.1 snapping turtles numbers are controlled by natural predators that feed on snapping turtle eggs and when they're hatchlings.

Near our cabin there was a guy called "The turtle man".. He would wade in the creek looking for spots along the shore where a turtle would borrow into the side of the creek bed. He would reach in and pull the turtle out using both hands. He did this relying on the premise that the turtles don't back into their borrows but swim in ,enter head first. As far as I know he never lost any fingers but you'd never convince me to do it that way.

Because they are snapping turtles and are massive spreading in the water pond lagoon then overpopulates and pray all the waterfowl.
@daerth44235 жыл бұрын
Common snapping turtles are NOT anywhere close to extinction. Just about every little pond, creek, and mud puddle are chock full of them and if they were toxic I would have died years ago. They're delicious! Alligator snappers are rare and are illegal to kill but not common snappers.
