While Coho Salmon Fishing on rivers is relatively new to me, I have taken a liking to twitching hand tied marabou jigs for Coho. I owe a lot of my river fishing knowledge to discussion, tips, tales and tactics directly from, Rodney Hsu "Fishing with Rod." His videos really do help anyone along their fishing journey from novice to experienced. If you are interested in finding the way to your first coho salmon on the end of your line then I would first direct you to the wealth of information and entertainment on his channel HERE:
/ fishingwithrod
When it comes to "Twitching Jigs" though this video should really help you get started if you have been struggling with your first hook up. I think after a few more outings with the Jig you may even be able to find a How to Twitch Video going up on Rod's Channel... lets say as early as next season, haha!
When I found out that Coho would take lures and saw people catch coho on Jigs I felt this was right up my line of experience. I grew up fishing the prairies for walleye on lakes and slower rivers. Jigging was one of the prime tactics employed to catch the marbled eyed critters. Since walleye tend to live near the bottom on drop offs, points and underwater structure the use of a lead jig to cover structure was prime. I had been hopping jigs for years. So when I saw guys twitching for salmon I kind of was in disbelief that this would actually work. Then one day I found myself on the river bank and actually watched as salmon darted out after a jig from a log jam. I knew right then and there I was onto something that I was all too familiar with. These coho were in trouble. You may want to watch that first video I made at this link: • FAST ACTION Coho Salmo...
Soon I was snagging jigs and losing more than I really wanted to purchase. So I got into tying my own. After tying a bunch on sub quality hooks I have realized I just wasted a lot of time and materials cheaping out on the business end of twitching. So if you want to tie your own jigs trust me that you want to get something worthy of your time and effort on the bench. I am HIGHLY IMPRESSED with the JIG GEEK JIGS that I was using in this video. These things have super durable paint, a super sharp, sturdy sickle style hook. It is a great size for hooking up and staying pinned through the coho acrobatics and death rolls they use to pop hooks loose. I was using the 3/8 ounce jigs that I tied with my own paterns shown at the end of the video.

1:26 this is where the skill of reading water really pays off. The river flows in from the right, and bends left leaving an eddy against that log. Perfect coho holding water.

That whole pool is full of coho, but I did get a bunch casting spoons and retrieving along that log and shoreline. But it was snaggy in there, lost two jigs. So couldn't get too close with the jig over there.

Jigs are a ton of fun to fish and super productive. As an angler you are always active, you are fishing by feel, and jigging tends to favour water that others (drift anglers) tend to overlook. I got turned onto jig fishing 5-6 years ago and haven't touched my level wind reel and roe since!

Retention is open only till Dec 31st though I believe per the regs.

What do you think about adding quick snap for quick change or better tying directly ? And How much leader should I put ?
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
I guess you could use a snap, then you just lose one mor thing when you snag. I just usually tie directly. The length of fluoro doesn't really matter. I start with about 6 feet and use it all the way down to about a foot since you lose some every change.

I just use my 7 foot, medium action, 6-15 lb line class Ugly Stik Rod. I have 10 to 20 pound braid on the Shimano Stracid Ci4+. I would say most guys use a 7 to 8 foot rod with a fast action. You don't want too soft of a tip section.

@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
@@bk7661 if they didn't give you a reason why to stay away from the Stradic then how is that good advice? You need explanation and reason if it is useful. Some people tell you to stay away from stuff because they've never personally used one or know anything about it. I use a much smaller and lighter set up then a lot of guys. I think guys probably go overkill if you are just fishing vedder coho all you need is a 2500 reel. I mean why is a 2500 too small did they explain? I've pulled in chum on the same set up. A lot of guys go with the Shimano Sedona or the Sahara. Twitching a jig all day is hard n your wrist and arms. The bigger the Reel and rod the more fatigue and wrist pain you may experience whereas a lighter 7 foot rod and 2500 size reel is easier to fish all day. That's why when someone tells you a Blanket statement you should always ask for an explanation to see if they actually know what they are talking about and if they have worthwhile experience. I thought I blew up one of my Stradics when I hooked a big chum once. But took it apart and oiled it and still using it. I also use the 2500 sizes for pike, walleye, and bass open water and ice. Gotten a lot of use out of them.
