This more of a "how to" style crabbing video (how I do it at least). It was a very crowded day on the bay, but we still ended up with good cooler full. Thanks for watching

We were in Alsea Bay last week. We had an awesome time. Your video's and information was spot on. The people we tried to rent a boat from in Newport gave us bait, and the way to use the bait, would not work together. But the people we rented a boat from in Waldport were awesome. Thank You.

I read your comment on how you're worried about what someone else may have used as bait as a reason for not eating the head fat and guts. If you ever decide on eating the "guts", then try it the way Koreans eat it. Eating it hot right out of the steamer, if you put a little white rice, sesame oil, butter and mix it all together inside the shell, you get an awesome meal. Give it a shot!
@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
:) I'm not anti guts, I wouldn't even think about it twice if they where ocean crabs. I've just seen some others using some really gnarly bait over the years

@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking It out! The shape really doesn't matter, though seals and sea lions can't get into the traps. You can buy the traps at any coastal tackle shop or sporting good stores, they're also available online. I usually leave mine down for 20-30 minutes. Have a good one!

Thanks man, I have couple of videos planned showing where and why I crab were I do, with landmarks in each of the bays I crab in....general soak time for me is 15-30 minutes depending on how many I have out. late summer and fall are generally best or anytime fish are running. The tide table can be found on line by searching what ever bay you are going to. Here are the Oregon ones...take care! kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=hcAV4KFJMpo

backyardmeat Waiting for those Vids :) Southern Oregon IF you were to start from scratch, from your experience how you would build your economical Crab catching machine. Boat, brand type, size, motor. Traps , set up, Fav Baits, chicken,...... Where to trap, Bays, depth, anything else to look for. How to read tide charts what to look for, ideal conditions Best crabbin beer, I have my ideas : ) Anything else for a rookie to get started. thks for any help
@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
ok...here you go.. Boat 14-16 (welded). 9.9 outboard or bigger.. Honda, merc or Yamaha, start with rings and a trap or two, chicken or turkey for bait at 10-14ft depth, crab the selves where it go from 25' to 12' of water. High slack is best, with pots in the water 2 hours prior to the tide, with as little swing as possible. Newport, coos, Florence are year round and Waldport killer from aug- oct. First bait in water always work regardless of tide....I don't always drink beer in the morning, but when I do it's miller lite

@backyardmeat9 жыл бұрын
Fish is the best, but we have to many seals and sea lions. I use almost all chicken, turkey is great too. I usually pick up couple turkeys this time of year when they are super cheep or free, I cut them up and freeze them for later.
@dandanmien10 жыл бұрын
just wondering, why do you guys break in half before cooking? just to clean it?
@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
The main reason is that it's the fastest way to get them clean. Another reason is you really don't have to have water to clean them this way, which is great if there's no cleaning staition. You can hit them on the top of the shell and they stay whole, but you have the spray the guts out. Thanks for checking it out!

Are you guys recreational/sport or commercial? I crab fish recreationally in CA and was wondering if I need any thing more than a fishing license to crab fish from a boat. Also what were you saying about the high/low tides? Thanks.
@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
Just recreational, all you need is a over the counter shellfish permit. They are good for a year or you can buy a 3 day if you just visiting. On the tides, pick the day with the small difference between high and low and crab the high slack
@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
Monroe Madison They are sweeter and have a lot meat per crab, in my opinion they are the best eating crab.....Side Note: I've never had fresh blue crab (only frozen), so I really not comparing apples to apples
@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
Monroe Madison They eat the same soft, there's just very little meat in them, we can only keep males on the Dungeness so I'm not sure if there is a difference. Agreed on the hot dog eaters :),... If you're ever out west, try out the Dungeness, and buy them live. The ones at the stores are often frozen and thawed out

So i fish and dive in Northern CA but never done the crabbing thing before,,, how far and how deep do you find these things? I have seen guys do it from Piers, Kayaks, and i have also seen like the big commercial boats way the hell out at horizon level. Anything particular you're looking for when setting a pot? Awesome video as usual man. Its doing a excellent job of making me hate California that much more haha
@backyardmeat9 жыл бұрын
I like 15-20 feet of water and I try to find a "shelf" or flat spot just off the channel. You can get sea floor maps of what ever bay your in too. You can also go out on a super low tide and look for all the spots that looks like tide pools, that were the stuff settles and on a high tide that's where the crabs hang
@joesgotya99309 жыл бұрын

I had a buddy that works for a metal fab place cut it out. He just used a cutting torch and buffed out the cut lines. If I was going to do it, I would make the the hole with a jig saw with a metal cutting blade, but the torch sure make nice clean lines.

What does "a 24 total per person crab possession limit" mean? What if you crab and take your catch limit home every day? Just trying to understand the law. How many traps can you use per person , is there a limit? What are the best type traps for, non commercial. Rings, homemade, round, square, looks like you use some of each. Preferred brand? Favorite dipping sauce? Thanks!
@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
It means if you go crabbing on Friday and then again on Saturday with out going home and get stopped on the way home you can only have 24 per person total. You can only catch 12 per day, that's the most important thing to know, the other sinereo never really happens. 3 traps per person. Rings are my favorite for space and speed. Round heavy duty traps are the best for preformance. I don't really have a brand that I use, But a good rule is, the more they cost the better they are.....dipping sauce,...just butter and homemade cocktail sauce. Have a good one, and if I wasn't clear shoot me a measage back

nice video. I am coming out to the coast late july of 2014. Will be in the bayou show. Any pointers or tips would be helpful.
@backyardmeat10 жыл бұрын
What bay? I've crabbed a lot of the bays in Oregon, I might be able to give you some land marks to set gear.... But a couple of tips, if you're in a boat, crab the edge of the channel in about 15-20 feet of water. Chicken or turkey will keep the seals and sea lions out of your traps. regardless of the tide the 1st pots in the water in morning usually are the best, if you can beat the rest of the yahoos out. If you can, pick a day with as little swing in the tide and crab the high slack. Mid week is always better than the weekend (less crabbers). If you drop pots and catch a lot of seaweed, move them it's a mess and usually not very many crabs. Hope this helps, and you're going to be going when the crabbing is good so that should help. Good luck!

I wish the weather had been better the day I filmed this and you could have had a better idea of where to go. They're are three main spots in Waldport, strait across from the marina on the far side of the bay out to the bridge. The next spot is passed the bridge along the right side ( going out) just off the houses. The best area is from the jaws in along the hwy 101. One tip on rental rings, when you fist drop them hang on to the end until its on the bottom, in my option they never put enough rope on them....I think they like to keep the deposit
@scottdavis188010 жыл бұрын
I watch you clean the crab then cook them. Is there a benefit or a flavor difference, to cooking them whole? Hopefully I will be successful and can use your knowledge in this. lol

Ur dead wrong... Just cuz your from the south doesn't make blue crab better. The three top crabs are Dungeness, king and snow crab. Blue crabs are no where even close.

They're better cause they're sweeter in taste,,,not because they're bigger,,
