I bought his book on fluke fishing. Tied his recommended 3/4 ounce bucktail rig with a 3/0 baitholder hook tipped with gulp as a teaser. Caught my first keeper fluke from shore in the back bays of Cape May. This guy is the best.

I like the way your shows are produced. No loud music hooplah, just facts and details. You must have a lot of fish there. I'm in SC. We have a 15 fish limit and a 14 inch TL. But flounder is not so sought after , so I doubt that it is over fishing. I fish exactly the same llooking areas you do. I can even see the ocean in some places. Some are sandy and some mud. I also gig some. A ten fish night of gigging for me is very good. I'm not the best flounder gigger though and when the water gets too warm there is too much plankton to see very deep. But I see you jigging in 15-20' deep water. I have never tried that but I will my next go. Thanks for your show.

John, I've recently gotten back in the water after an 11 year hiatus and never used gulp nor this type of bucktail/dropper loop combo. I've got to tell you...this rig and your videos are outstanding. I'm using this rig exclusively for Cape May back bay/DE bay flounder as well as for the deeper Cape May and Delaware off shore flounder hotspots. I simply adjust the weight of the bottom bucktail to accommodate the depths that I'm fishing. If a fish so much as sniffs the bait, you feel it with this rig. Tomorrow I am fishing the legendary back bay hotspots in Avalon, NJ and am fishing your set up with one minor change, I excluded the barrel swivel and tied the fluorocarbon directly to the PowerPro with a uni to uni knot. I can't wait to see the results. Thank you again for taking the time to make me a better angler. Continued success in the water this year!!

I used this same rig last Monday on a party boat and it worked very well. I had to use a 4oz bucktail to hold bottom but I did catch about 12 fish, only two keeper though. I kept track of the hook that caught most and all but one hooked on the glass minnow. The only one on the bucktail was snagged, so maybe that one also started on the minnow. Thanks John for all your vids, my friends and I would love to spend a day or two with you sometime. P.S. I had the pool fish up till the end of the trip and was blown away by a 8 lb fish, mine was only 6lb

My Dad caught the pool fish on the same trip, using your rig. whenever I'm on the beach everyone is using your set up. After the boat doced we hit the surf and I saw a guy land a weak fish with your rig. Just yesterday I saw a guy catch this monster fluke with your rig...if I could post a picture I would. The word is out your rig catch fish.

I can't wait to try your methods here along the Alabama Gulf Coast (Dauphin Island). Our minimum length for flounder are !2". Your throwing back our prize sizes. I don't to much about the drift though. I hope to get on um like you have but the BP oil spill has slowed our flounder and blue crabs something awful. I hope they can get back to where they were prior to the oil spill. Thanks for the video and keep it up please!!!

Amen. There seems to be far more around on technique than how to read a chart for spots. Also every time I fish the sound out there it's at least 5-10 mph wind! My kayak drifts like it had a motor even with a sock. John has the luxury of living there and picking nice days.

Gellfex I love a 5-10mph wind! - boat or kayak. That's a nice drift. I work a fulltime real job like most people, so I can't just pick nice days to fish. What I do is time my trips to get the wind and current in the same direction. You have given me an idea for the next video. I'm going to do a little more on finding the fish.

So I moved from Long Island to Charleston South Carolina. whenever I talk about the fishing back home the locals will say fishing is not a thing in New York. I don't know why it's so hard to believe that Long "ISLAND" is a seafaring Community SMH. My dad and I used to go fishing for Luke all the time and I don't remember ever getting skunked I go out fishing here all the time and hardly ever catch anything it's crazy I miss home I thought it was that they don't have any blood worms here. They don't even have any charter boats that accommodate more then a few people and cost hundreds of dollars to get on. I remember my dad waking me up in the morning and hopping on the Sea Spray or one of the many other fishing charter vessels for 15 20 bucks and having a great day. Ahh the good old days, I miss em.

john do you crush your barbs? I have met a few ppl now who said they crush the barbs to save the gulps from getting beat up. they change gulp ever drift to make sure the scent is always on the baits, is any of this necessary? I use gulp and do not do any of that but they say it definitely increased their catch rate.

John, thanks for all the great videos. Some days the conditions just don't allow for a light bucktail. Do you find that using heavier jigs diminishes your catch? I know some guys use up to 5 oz jigs with success, wondering what your take was. Thanks!

Do you know any good places for blues/bass this year? This year I went out about 5 times. 3 times I caught nothing. One time I caught 2 20" porgies off of tods point in about 15-20 of water with clams. The other time I was fishing off of Captains Island and caught 2 30lbs. Bass. Today I went out off of playland and I was fishing the bunker pods. (Its like bunker heaven. In a matter of 20 mins my dad and I snagged about 15-20 fresh bunker) We didnt catch anything. Just wondering if you know of any spots where people are catching blues and bass.

Hi John. I thought I saw in one video that you used 5 inch mullet on 3 oz buck. Do you step up the mullet length with a bigger buck? Got out for the first time this past weekend. Used you rig set up. My brother said "too much work with all that jigging". Well we did pretty good and he ended up putting on my other rig.

Yes. Bigger gulp in the areas where bigger fluke are hitting bigger prey. They're also a better match to the bigger bucktails.

Every time i try a bucktail with gulp with this exact rig and jigging motion, i always get outfished by people dragging spearing and squid... read your book and watched all videos, still can't figure out what i'm doing wrong. Maybe i'm just not locating the fluke too well. I always catch a couple, but not even close to the action you're getting. I'm determined to figure out the secret to bucktailing this summer with hours of hard work on the water.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 10 жыл бұрын
What pound test is your main line? You're using braid - correct?
@Engineer_Heathen
@Engineer_Heathen 10 жыл бұрын
braid (power pro) 15 pound test with 12 pound test mono leader. 6 foot 6 medium action baitcaster. I find that i need a two ounce bucktail (spro) in order to stay on the bottom (i fish in less than 20 feet of water at all times). Should i be using lighter braid like 10 lb? i fish in the raritan bay and can't seem to get the hang of this bucktailing thing. i do catch fish, but definitely get outfished by spearing and squid (both size and quantity). Thanks for the response john.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 10 жыл бұрын
xIEm1n3m That all sounds right, but you must be dealing with a lot of current or wind if you really need a 2-ounce bucktail to stay down in only 20 feet of water. That sounds heavy. If your drift is really that fast, then jigging might not work as well there.
