This is one of the best Flounder rigs we use. It's easy to tie up and fish. We have used it to win tournaments in our club and put a lot of fish in the freezer.

My boat is a 25' C-Hawk Pilothouse called VENATOR. Holler if you see us out! We had a cobia hit your rig at 3rd island last weekend on a small flounder/bass spinning rod my buddy was holding....tore it to pieces and gone quickly....Shortly afterward one (possibly the same one) hit my heavier spinning rod that I was jigging a bucktail with curlytail grub. Fought it about 5 mins before it threw the hook. I'm 0 for about 6 on Cobia this year so far. Flounder picking up though.

I use the exact same thing here in Texas and the flounder can't resist it. I typically have great luck with the Chartreuse 4" Swimming Mullet, though I often try different colors. During the flounder run in October-November, they'll hit on anything. Tandem-rigged is the way to go with flounder.

+Texas Coastal Sportsman when Scott tied the loop knot for the swivel. Do you add the swivel to the rig or do attach the rig to the main line that has the swivel attached?
@brianharvey351
@brianharvey351 8 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what he's referring to as a swivel. If he's talking about what I would call a regular swivel, I could see just putting the swivel on your rig and have it already on the loop of the rig; then you'd just tie the swivel to your main line. If you went this route you'd have to make your rig with the swivel on there and it would never come off. If he's referring to a quick connect type swivel, then you'd leave it on your main line and just snap your loop onto it when you want to use that specific rig.

this is called a bucktail spec. good luck staying out of the wreck with this but great for the flats. the action on these are hard to beat. i usually use the same weight bucktail on lead and trail though ... hit the slack right and the lead bounces side to side in the best walk the dog. these are the best for striper by the rocks under lights at night. use shad darts and rail shad all night with the same deal. i make my own shad darts that use mono for the tail material. they go bonkers for that see through look mimicking the shiner they're pounding.

@scottnra
@scottnra 9 жыл бұрын
riley633 I'm sure you can, but keep in mind Flounder are sight feeders mostly. I don't know if I'm right or not about them getting tackle shy, but I think any edge you can get helps you catch more fish. I would stick with flourocarbon for the actual rig. If you are going to go with a superbraid, keep it thin and an green so as not to stand out too much. I think FC is worth the little extra $ for the rig, and yeah you might loose a few more on snags, but I really think you'll catch more fish.

new to flounder fishing - spent most of my childhood using downriggers to salmon fish Lake Michigan, and I look forward to using this method in the bay near Ocean City, New Jersey when I retire there. Question - is this rig paired with anything else on the line? You mentioned a four inch mullet - is that a bait you add to this? Do you add any weight to the line as well? I am assuming that the rig as is wouldn't sink and stay at the bottom, but maybe I am wrong?

This is an interesting rig. Personally, I've always preferred to tie a palomar loop to attach my swivel onto my braid without a snap swivel. I've not had my line snap or slip at either ends of my swivel (knock on wood) and I run on 15 lb fluoro / 20 lb braid... heaviest fish was a 40 lb+ cow nose sting ray. I am a kayak fisherman so this rig makes me worry a bit about tangling, but I'll give it a shot nevertheless. My flounder rig is perfection loop at the very bottom for a bucktail, and up above is a dropper loop for my teaser hook. I'm going to try to incorporate your rig into mine, so I'll be fishing 3 hooks. Is that cheating? xP

This is for slow current? i cant see this working without a large sinker in fast current like eastern end of long Island or deep fluking in 50' + off of Jersey. Have you used this in these conditions and if so to what effect?
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 жыл бұрын
patrick kelly Actually yes, sort of. We use a dropper at the BBT in up to about 80' of water with a 10' or so leader and the jig/gulp with pretty good luck But that is really not the same rig at all. This one works well to about 30' IF the current, drift and wind all working together. Sometimes when things are weird, you can get down well at 15' but those are tough days and not that often.
