The last caulking i did had to be double teamed by myself and a friend! We were caulking for hours, it was a big job, but we kept nailing it till we got it pounded out, The wife wanted to call in a couple pros but after some convincing and seeing that we had adequate caulk for the job, she decided to let us have a go at it! My friend Started at one end with his caulk and me on the other end with my caulk! The wife was skeptical that we could get the job done to her standards but at the end of the day she cleaned up the mess, and was extremely happy how it turned out!

I liked the toilet paper idea for filling in big gaps. I use either a spray bottle of water to keep my finger and the calk slightly wet before smoothing it out. For applying latex calk over tile: i go over the calked (and wiped off with a finger) area with a wet cloth to take of any extra calk that gets into areas beyond the calking bead area. Then I use a wet finger to go across the bead to make sure that the wet towel doesn't leave any traction lines from the weave pattern of the washcloth. It's always useful to see other people's ideas and procedures. Thanks!

Good stuff bud. I'm glad that you FILL the gaps rather than globbing caulking in there and trying to smooth out the finish. The TP trick is good if you're cramped for time. I personally use expanding foam... but you have to wait for it to cure. Once done, you can cut it flush (or to any angle you want/need) and it's a FIRM surface to now caulk over instead of TP which is going to MOVE on you while caulking.
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer5 жыл бұрын
I generally use backer rod. This video caters to the average home owner, and gives you a quick fix in a pinch 😉. The spray foam can be risky as its not nice to clean up if it expands or spills over.
@liberty93485 жыл бұрын
@@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer Backer rod is good for sure, no doubt. The foam certainly can be tricky. Guess I've used it so long I know just how much to use/spray so it only slightly raises out of the gap and I can quickly take off the excess. I use the very tip edge (where it is less than 1/2” wide) of damp yellow sponge (only yellow cause other colors may bleed). I just gently glide that edge tip across the bead similar to the way he used his finger and it seals it nice and clears any excess from the spot too. My father taught me this when I got my first home years ago. It makes a very nice even professional looking result every time.

HA - yes, I have the Ryobi and I no longer dread caulking, have sore hands, or have it look like a blind man did it.

while we in the business know this, it's amazing how many people don't. I built a complex mantle piece for a customer when I was young and my tools/skills weren't yet creating flawless joints. But still, caulked normally and properly, the mantle would look great when painted. The customer said her neighbor would paint it and since I had the understanding that caulking was the painters job (which it really is) I didn't caulk it. Big mistake. When I came back a few months later for an unrelated job, I saw how wrong it looked..I was embarrassed because you could tell the customer didn't seem to feel one way or another about the mantle. It was painted red first of all (they were Asian) and the long vertical miters along the columns were noticeably open (I had used a crappy used craftsman table saw with a dull general purpose blade and again, I was a beginner). Various other places needed proper caulking as well. I would have caulked and re-painted the mantle for free. Since it was red though, and since there was no leftover paint, I would have had to pay for the paint myself because the customer had no interest in putting more money into the mantle. That I would not do. All I could do was try and explain that if it had been caulked and painted properly (and painted white, smh) it would have looked very different and very nice. This was all lost on the customer though so it has irked me ever since. To this day, whenever possible, I always caulk my own work. Especially on a mantle peice.

I would be concerned about movement between the baseboard and the wall. I think I would use expanding foam first, then cut back the foam and finish with caulk.
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer5 жыл бұрын
No movement unless your walls are moving 👍 and be careful with spray foam, it won't remove easily on surfaces that are delicate or untreated.

@@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer Thanks for the tip. I was concerned that the wooden baseboards may move a little in the seasons.

When do you caulk: before priming; or before the first finish coat; or before the final finish coat? Thanks!
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer5 жыл бұрын
Caulk immediately after install. This way you paint/primers go over the caulk to seal it with the wall colour.
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer5 жыл бұрын
Or trim colour pending the cut in.
