If you have ever noticed that you engage in a lot of negative thinking when you are feeling down or depressed, you are not alone. Negative thinking is a key factor that drives depression. But once you are aware of your negative thinking, what do you do with it? How do you change negative thinking patterns that are causing or contributing to depression and depressed mood? This video explains thought challenging and how to use this powerful skill to overcome depressive thinking. It explains how to use a four-column thought record to more effectively identify negative thoughts and change how you are thinking to ensure that you are thinking in realistic ways. By doing this, it helps you take control of your negative thinking and more effectively manage how you feel.
You can see the video on thought awareness and how to use a three-column thought record here: • How You Can Become Bet...

When I first learned this technique I was so depressed I thought all my thoughts were realistic! I actually had to have help to know what was rational. I worked on it every day for over a year before before I was able to connect the dots on my own. I encourage anyone who needs help to get help. Now I’m a cheerful and loving person to myself and others. Thanks.

How about the theory of "depressive realism" that has been proposed not too many years back. I rather agree with it however I think it can get exaggerated and can spin out of control and into "awfulizing" reality and mind reading. What I think trips people up, depressed or otherwise are expectations and attachment. We can always ask the other person what happened and still we have to lower our expectations that we will get an honest answer because essentially people do what they want to do and use busyness and other things as"noble" excuses. Maybe lowering expectations and knowing the people do not like confrontation is a way to add some balance. It doesn't mean excusing sloppy behavior, especially if somebody backs out of plans repeatedly, but it's more about not convicting ourselves either if someone or something doesn't go our way, or is planned.

Thank you again Dr Rami Nader! Another very helpful video. I was wondering if you have experience in helping with addiction? I'm currently hooked on cigarettes and feel as if it impacts my mental health to a degree. Or maybe if you had any resources to point me in the right direction? Thank you again, it's much appreciated!

Your explanations are really effective. How do you challenge your distorted thoughts when you are feeling safer being alone and reducing negative emotions by disengaging because my depression/Anhedonia has made me not my healthy self and sapped all my motivation and discipline I have had previously? I am not sure if this makes sense! Thank you for helping with these thoughtful and articulate videos. Daniella

@@DrRamiNader Thank you very much, Dr. Nader. I'm eagerly watching all your videos, because all of them are related to all my problems in life: Depression, Anxiety, Stress. You have some special technique to talk about them, in details, and the best part is that it looks like you deeply feel what we feel, like you are the patient. You describe exactly what we feel, such empathy and compassion, such care in choosing the right words in order to not hurt our feelings are your strongest weapon. Few people can do that in such a careful way. Often, many doctors have not such empathy about other people. Thank you so much. 🙏🙏❤️👍🏻🏆

My husband after seeing a neurologist received a diagnosis of depression. He will have more testing. He doesn’t share his feeling; it takes a very long time, or doesn’t, answer questions I ask. He stays in bed for a lot of the day. Is it harmful to share your videos with him? Could you possibly do a video for spouses to cope with the extreme poor communication? Thank you.
