Very clear and helpful videos, thankyou. There is however one major issue that I feel needs to be addressed - Torque settings. VW (and probably all other vehicle manufacturers) specify Torque values for fixings (nuts, bolts etc.) when they are being tightened. Some bolts are even 'stretch' bolts that are torqued to a value and then turned by a further angle (e.g. 90 degrees) that should only be used once i.e. should be replaced at each use. This is especially true with suspension and brakes, where insufficient or incorrect torque on certain fixings may result in catastrophic failure resulting in major safety implications. A great feature is that the videos have been annotated with the correct tool sizes for the fixings being loosened/adjusted so I suggest they could be annotated to provide the correct Torque settings (with reference to relevant service manuals) for the those being tightened. Hope this helps.

It’s a 18mm spanner required , not 19mm ( at least in the UK). The manual stresses not to use an impact driver on the hub bolt. When tightening the nuts on ball joints, the threads themselves will just spin unless loaded You also need a special tool for the nut on top of the shock absorber ( as well as a spring compressor, although that much is clear in the video) Nothing will come off anywhere near as easily as shown on this video ! You should look up torque settings in the manual . The manual also lists a number of nuts and bolts which should be replaced There are arrows on the top strut plate that should be fitted inline with the direction of travel

I think the Europeans use different nomenclature; you'll have to look at his tool closely. Did this job to replace the coil springs only on both sides of my 2006 Jetta and what I found was that the shock stem (top of shock) uses a odd-ball 7mm allen wrench (not found in most sets) with either a spanner or a pass-through socket. I used that procedure to avoid spinning and damaging the shaft by using a impact wrench. All the lower fittings are hex nuts/bolts or triple square bolt heads (as on the shock pinch bolt). Where the sway bar end-link attaches to the shock, you'll need a triple-square bit 6mm to hold the bolt stem. Note: a torx bit may work, but a triple-square has 12pts for a better grip as opposed to 6pts on a torx. Warning: don't use a impact on the smaller bits. Also, it's very helpful to prelube the fittings with penetrant and clean-out the areas where a triple-square will be used.

This is really useful video, thank you so much for making it. Is there a way to do this without the spring compressor? I am home mechanic and do not have one.
@dale96165 жыл бұрын
Chris Kenny ive seen it done with ratchet straps but I wouldn’t do it. Them springs are lethal. There are some cheap compressor thing that are like threaded bar and clamps that you wind up to compress it. Theyre not the best so keep it pointing away from you 👍🏼

I did mine with a set of spring compressors by Sealey - it's doable, but fiddly and you have to be VERY careful. If I'd had use of another car and a friendly mechanic, I'd have simply taken the struts to someone with a proper spring compressor. If you DO do it yourself, make sure that you use clamps with 2 hooks on each end, not one, make sure they're secure and tighten each side a little at a time.
@tonyburton89715 жыл бұрын
Why did you remove the bottom ball joint to hub nut rather than the wishbone bolts? Also when you took the strut retaining bolt out you used a 21mm socket, but when you put it back, you appeared to use a 22mm socket??!

Thank you for your feedback.In order not to disturb the wheel position settings, our mechanic disconnected the lever from the hub in the pivot joint.The socket we used for 21 mm.Best regards,Autodoc!

What you have is a 24mm XZN bolt; a standard 12pt metric socket will work. My 2006 Jetta has the 27mm hex bolt, but my 2011 and 2013 Passat have the XZN. Word of caution: each bolt style has a different torque value and procedure. See my reply to Ignacio Barcia from 9mo ago for help with this.
