Yeah these old trucks are not to bad to work on. Yeah the newer vehicles have tons of computer modules to mess with, and require expensive scan tools to access the information you need to work on them. So they can be a hassle for sure. Well thanks for the comment and have a good day.

Thanks for the fine videos for this old inexperienced owner of an '86 5.2L 318 V8. I am going to check out the fuel relay in the morning. I did find a NOS fuel pump for the truck, just in case. Think I will get another relay for possible future use + a fuel filter which has probably not been changed out for years. I do use an additive to neutralize the ethanol. I don't know how the fuel tank looks so I may drop it to check its condition, if I can. Thanks again. Jack

+lanie shay Mine was a 92 Dakota. I am not sure about the 97 fuel filter location I have never worked on one. One thing you can try is searching online at autozone, oreilly, napa, or any other auto parts store. You just type in your vehicle specific info and search for the part. If they sell an external fuel filter for your specific vehicle it probably has one. If they dont sell one it is probably inside the tank. Well I hope this info helps you out. Thanks for the comment and have a good day.

Hey buddy; decided to go on and replace the filter and the rubber hose on both sides just disintegrated; can i cut the metal line and clamp on a new piece of rubber hose? double clamp? don't want to buy and replace the entire fuel line when all thats wrong is the machined on rubber part. thanks
@figibloom
@figibloom 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah you could try to fix it that way. If I did it that way I would use double clamps, and maybe even triple clamps. I would make sure the rubber hose slipped over a cleaned up metal piece (no rust) at least 4 inches or so just to give enough room to seal everything up with clamps. I think that should work, but I think my first choice would be fittings over hose and clamp. I just think the fittings are a better connection IMO. Well I hope this info helps you out. Have a good day.

" my first choice would be fittings over hose and clamp." lost me there :) if theres a better way to fit the rubber to the metal, i need to know...got a parts link handy?
@figibloom
@figibloom 8 жыл бұрын
I think I would try to make a better connection between the metal to rubber hose transition. I would just be worried about just slipping the rubber hose just over the tubing itself and putting clamps over that. (this would most likely work, but may or may not leak later, so I am just saying that route would not be my first choice) There are numerous ways to hook up fuel line, and there are numerous types of fittings that could work. However, I dont know what the fittings are called, what there part number is, or what the right size you would need to use. So maybe try checking out your local auto parts store and see what type of fuel fittings they have in stock. Maybe bring a small section of your fuel line with you to see what size fittings you need. Or check out Dormanproducts.com and search for fuel line repair, fuel line connectors, fuel line compression fittings, fuel flare fittings, fuel line, and fuel fittings. The trouble is they have a whole lot of ways to connect fuel lines together and searching their website to get actual part numbers may take awhile, but they do have a lot of fuel line and fuel fittings to choose from. I am not saying that rubber hose slipped over tubing with clamps wont work, I just think they have better stronger fittings to make the transition. The most important thing is, to make sure what ever repair you decide to go with does not leak. Well I hope this info helps you out. Take care bud and have a good day.

Thank you so much; i will be careful. i'm looking at double flaring the end of the metal line..slide the hose over that and clamp....that's all the filter has...one double flare and one clamp. @figibloom 10 жыл бұрын
Clayton Sosbee I have a 92 model so I cant say for sure where it is on a 94, but if it is the same as mine the fuel filter should be on the drivers side left frame rail. I guess the best way to find it is to look at your gas tank and look for the fuel hose/tube that comes out of it and heads forward. Maybe somebody took yours off and didnt put one back, in which cause it wouldnt be to hard to add one. Anyway mine in on the frame rail just forward of the gas tank on the drivers side. Well I hope this helps you out. Thanks for your comment and have a good day.

@figibloom
@figibloom 8 жыл бұрын
I am not sure what size fuel line it is. I no longer have my Dakota anymore I gave my truck to my nephew, so I cant measure it. I usually measure tubing lines with my cheap caliper I got from harbor freight for around 10 with a coupon.

One more question? my 91 is dying on me rollin down a level street as well as at idle. it ran like a champ for a while and then started up again so we thinkin that the fuel pump is going out. Could a clogged filter cause these symptoms? thanks man
@figibloom
@figibloom 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah a clogged fuel filter could cause a fuel delivery problem for sure. I suggest you test fuel pressure and compare to specs. I have never worked on a 91 Dakota so I am not sure if it is set up the same as a 92 or if it is completely different. Couple of things I would check would be fuel pressure at idle, and I would check fuel pressure while doing a snap throttle test to make sure the fuel pressure hangs in there. (if pressure is low or drops under snap throttle, could be a clogged filter, other restriction, or bad pump, replace filter and test again) If pressure is still low or drops under throttle snaps, probably needs a new fuel pump (buy always check power and grounds at fuel pump before replacing pump, because bad power or grounds could cause pump to run badly) Also I would probably hook up a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold. A simple vacuum gauge can tell you a lot of information about the overall health of the engine. (you can look up vacuum gauge readings on google for more info) Also I would make sure your Idle Air Control (IAC) motor is working properly. That could be a problem causing your truck to die at idle. I had a bad IAC motor on my Dodge Dakota causing starting and rough idle running issues. Check that out here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4O3gKueotx9mZI Sometimes you can tell if the IAC is working by listening for the initial engine start up should rev a little higher and the IAC should make adjustments. You can hear the engine flare and then the IAC moves and dials in the IDLE speed. Another thing is check your truck for any stored codes try doing the ignition key trick by cycling the ignition on and off 3-5 times to see if your computer light will flash out any codes. (could be some info there) Here is a video of what I am talking about kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIXHfaqcgs14eqs Also being that your truck is as old as it is, I would probably check exhaust back pressure, which could also cause some of the things you are describing. (if the engine cant breathe right it wont run right, has to be able to get air in and get air out) On my 92 I could check that very easily by removing a hose at the EGR valve and checking back pressure at the egr valve. You can also do this test by unscrewing the O2 Sensor and threading in a pressure gauge there. Just some ideas to test out. Well I hope this info helps you out. Thanks for the comment and have a good day.

Man, you are unbelievably helpful. Please tell me what you know about completely replacing the fuel lines. we thought we'd simply replace the fuel filter....guess what? the rubber line was so dry rotted that there was no way for us to proceed....why doesnt the metal fuel line have an easy way to change out the rubber bits? from what i'm seeing, i must change out the entire line...metal, rubber hose...everything...what a nightmare! Please say what i'm facing in regards to changing out this entire metal/rubber fuel line? thanks AJ
@figibloom
@figibloom 8 жыл бұрын
I think If I was going to replace a metal fuel line. I think I would first measure the metal tubing with a caliper or micrometer just to figure out what size tubing you are dealing with. I would probably find a good part of the tubing and cut out the bad section with a small circular tubing cutter (maybe a hacksaw. just be careful of sparks and have a fire extinguisher on hand) Then I would slip a flare fitting over the tube, and I would flare the fitting (probably do a double flare just like in a brake line) This requires a double tube flaring kit. (harbor freight $21) You can google examples of connecting flare and double flare fittings together. Or maybe you could cut the fuel line and slip rubber hose over it and use clamps, the main thing is to make sure it does not leak. You could go to a junkyard and look for fuel line replacements. Look for replacement fuel lines on the internet, they might have a fuel replacement set that fits. I found a few videos online and some forums where people showed how they replaced their fuel lines. Here are some examples www.dakota-durango.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158734 and kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZvSqoiJg9ujnLs Also, last but not least here is a good video on repairing a rusted out fuel line, this is a video from south main auto. I watch a lot of this guys videos. I like his channel and recommend it to a lot of people. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXnEc4d6gshopK8 Well I hope this info helps you out. Good luck on fixing your fuel system. Have a good day.

so would there be undue pressure if i did not do the relay thing? could i loosen up the filter a little to release the pressure or would it spray gas for days? thanks
@figibloom
@figibloom 8 жыл бұрын
I dont know what would happen for sure, if you just cracked a fuel line. I try to relieve pressure before I crack a fuel line, I dont know that you have to do it the way I did it. I was taught to do it this way and that is the way I have always done it. I pull the fuel pump fuse or relay and let it run until it dies and then I crank it once or twice to try to relieve pressure. Even doing it the way I showed there is still a chance of getting sprayed in the face with fuel, which is not to fun. Well I hope this info helps you out. Thanks for the comment and have a good day.

I like to turn the key on for a few seconds to get a prime, and then turn the key off and back on to prime the fuel. I usually do this a few times to prime the line, just to help avoid a longer crank time. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for the comment and have a good day.

Then I just popped the fuel lines and changed out my filter as fast as I could to minimize fuel spillage. I did spill a little.

Just FYI a lot of these newer filters are smaller and I had to stretch the house as much as I possibly could to install the filter. Didn't even need to refasten in the bracket. Don't think I could anyway because the new one is much smaller diameter. So I'll be riding on a prayer like always, and be ready to reattach a dangling fuel filter on the side of the road I guess.

Mine neither, (2004). I have been told that there is no filter per se. There is a "sock" over the outlet inside the tank. If you get a low flow/no flow situation and all else checks out OK, here's what they do. They go to the last break in the line downstream from the tank, put on a fitting, take off the gas cap and blow compressed air into the tank. Hopefully, this blows the sock off. Now, there's no longer anything between your fuel system and any nasty's that may be, or get in there in the future. If this don't work and all else is good, it's drop the tank. Seems you're screwed either way. Blowing the sock off just kicks the can down the road a little.
