I just got my colostomy a week and a bit ago. I am totally freaked out to even look at it to be honest. I just found your channel and your videos are really helping me. I’m going to try to do my first flange change all on my own this evening. Fingers crossed!

Keep smiling, it gets easy very quickly. I have had my illeostomy since January. I think it took me a month to really get used to understanding the cues and learn how to not have a leak. These videos are great.

I will be having my colon removed October 10th. I have UC and immunotherapy has failed, I have strictures in my colon and entire colon is affected. This is the best option. Your videos have been helpful as I’m still trying to come to terms with this. There is so much to learn and research for appliances. So overwhelming and I’m an RN.

I told my wound care nurse about the paste and she said to keep using the ring that the paste leaves a lot of adhesive on the skin. Plus I did get infections now around my stoma. She did silver nitrate on it, which burned all day and I had to use an ice pak all day and night. I had emergency life saving surgery due to acute divculeritis and toxins, septis etc. It’s been so rough

I think you’re pretty brave for putting yourself out here. I had one question : why do you put the bag on an angle? The nurse who helped me years ago said it should be straight down for easy drainage. I’ve accidentally put it on a slight angle before and the weight of the waste pulls the bag down at the top. By the way I use the same appliance as you
@OstomyDiaries
@OstomyDiaries 4 жыл бұрын
I put it at a slight angle so the end of the bag doesn’t rub my thigh. I have no problem with draining it that way. I only let mine fill up halfway then empty so it doesn’t get to heavy. Sometimes however I may not be near a bathroom but I do the best I can lol!

For my little "Monster", we like the convex wafer with the barrier ring and the barrier paste and no-sting skin barrier. I have a kind of lip shaped stoma and it is an "in-e",(how do u spell that?), meaning he doesn't stick out at all he hides inside of the opening which causes more leakage instead of having an "out-e" stoma. Takes more stuff! I also love the barrier extenders on top of all that. I know it's a lot more product than most use but it's much better than having to change and wash every day because of leakage. I have the powder but it for me doesn't seem to work well with my skin and wafer? Interesting how we are all different. Cheers ;)

What a well behaved stoma! I used to do exactly the same change routine with those ostomy supplies, but fortunately since seeing my stoma nurse specialist, she helped me to use the correct bag instead of relying on several fixes to prevent leaking, pancaking etc. Now my changes are much quicker. Wow, that Adapt paste stings! If you can accept that, then you've got a nice seal around the stoma. But, I'd say whatever works for each individual is fine because we don't want to change lots of times.

Hi Amber. My brother just got his loop ileostomy. Did you have weight problems during your 1st few weeks after surgery? Did you have less food intake? And what do you do if you have high output? And lastly what do you do when you change your ileostomy that it is not active as what I am seeing in you videos. Thanks in Advance. -Chona

Nice video. Thank you. But your abs is pretty smooth surface. Because of multiple midline incisions and scar,the tape edge the flange dips down into the groove formed by the scar. This is always the area that unadheres first. Even though I press it back down it will come up later. Was told by Coloplast folks NOT to use skin prep as this lessens adherence time. Tried hairdryer after application without success. Then tried rolling Eakins seal into strip and placing into the midline groove. This seems to help but the Eakins seal material ,when gets wet, expands forming big lump of seal material. Just tried using smaller amount of Eakins seal today. Will see what happens. Able to get 3-4 days from one wafer. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I really had trouble getting my appliance to adhere. I realized my skin was really cold. I tried a heating pad for 20 minutes laying on my back. works great no leaks after that. It took me 6 months to get the best results. My sister is an ostomy nurse, she swears to keep it as clean and simple as possible. I don't use any pastes or skin preps. Good luck.

I just got my ostomy 9 days ago, I'm not freaked out, I'm at peace with it. I still have staples and drain tube, they should come out day after tomorrow, but I'm having a small prolapse. The doc says it's common and not to worry I have total confidence in him so I'm not. Any suggestions for me are so welcome
@OstomyDiaries
@OstomyDiaries 3 жыл бұрын
A small prolapse would be an easy fix (so I’m told, I’m not a doctor). My suggestions is to just try to relax and heal. Be patient with yourself. It’s a lot to turn and a big adjustment but you got this!! Definitely go to the main ostomy brands website and order free samples of products you might like to try. I would start at Hollister, Coloplast, and Convatec! 🤗 Praying for you!

Hi Amber, I got my ileostomy this August. I'm having a problem keeping my barrier to stick especially after I do crusting. My skin was red and itchy so I did stoma powder and cavilon spray then I put my barrier on with a little bit of Adapt stoma paste, when I thought it was on well I stood up and it popped off. What am I doing wrong. I am fat and have a chubby belly maybe that is why it is not sticking tight.

Thanks,at about four years post-Colectomy, I am about the same as your Product mix: interestingly I use ADAPT Lubricating Deodarant (*in pouch)routinely.. also. More later......I have never use that Cavilon spray around stoma, still use ADAPT REGUKAR RING: bit of a struggle with sizing my opening cut (on floating flange Skin Barrier #14603 NEW IMAGE)::May be a little tight in intestine; as I’m feeling slight squeeze,and having morning Queasiness, etc. May try cutting opening a sixteenth inch bigger more: my sromal end increased in size much of time, though still “deflates” in size occasionally.... thanks again: big learning curve for me even being Pharmacist & Immunizer etc....ps: interestingly , seems like Hollister made a running CHANGE on NEW IMAGE **POUCHES, ETc(*Drainable Pouch with Filter, 18183)ON MY LAST SUPPLY:A little darker PLASTIC, SEEMS TO be about the same body feel, etc.

Hey Amber, I hope you're well. Another great video! I learned a couple new things - specifically the powder/spray/paste use and application. I tend to use the wax rings as my go to and then use a dab of paste to fill in any gaps (guess I can't cut great circles or have an odd shaped stoma!). What do you think are the pros/cons of the powder/spray/paste over wax ring?
@OstomyDiaries
@OstomyDiaries 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Phil! For me, the wax rings didn’t work. I was constantly having leaks. I finally figured out the reason. It was because, due to scarring, I had uneven skin around my stoma. The wax ring was not getting a good deal in those dips in my skin. The paste molds into those areas better for me, and gives me a good seal. My ostomy usually lasts 4-5 days!
@MiltonTheTortoise

In your demonstration you applied your bag immediately after applying the barrier paste. But some ostomates say to let it sit a bit, allowing it to firm up a bit, as in this video from Hollister: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXu8nHSFeZmSiJo What difference does it make, in your opinion? Does it seal better if applied while wet?
