Hey ya'll! The barrier rings were NOT working for me due to some scars I have around my stoma. They work GREAT for some people, but in this video I share my experience and what I use in place of the rings!

As a recent ostomy patient, the Hollister Adapt stoma paste was a game changer! No more leakage and I can make an ostomy bag last for several days. Saves you lots of money on your ostomy supplies. 👍

My husband had ostomy surgery last November and upon arriving home we tried a few different things for a couple of weeks. The paste and the rings as well. Both worked good for him but we settled on the rings because it was easier and worked well for him. It inabled him to get five days before changing out his appliance, and he never has any problems.. Fortunately he is a candidate for a reversal and is indeed getting it done very soon.

Sounds like your recovery was a tough road! It's good to know that you made it through and that things are going well at this point. I'm a bit past 1.5 years from my surgery and doing well (although I had an infection from the drain, immediately post-surgery). I know this might not help in your case due to the skin contours, but I have found that cutting the rings in half (so you have 2 "U" shapes) before I apply them makes the seal around my stoma last--without any seepage--for 5 days. When I initially tried to use the rings whole, I wasn't getting consistent results. You don't know how much I appreciate you and the other youtube osto-mates! I have learned so much and been encouraged here! Thanks for sharing your story, struggles and all.

Your videos are great and help a lot of people. I have had a very different experience with the barrier rings. I was having leaking problems to the point where I had a lot of anxiety about it. I dug into my bag of supplies I was given at the hospital and saw the barrier rings. They have been a life changer for me. I was told initially that you could break a piece off and put it on a low spot where a leak might be occurring, but I use the whole ring. I just apply it to the back of my barrier, then after applying my bag I heat it up with a blow dryer and put pressure on it to insure a good seal. I went from changing my bag every 3 days (sometimes more often because of leaks), to once a week now. I've been using them for about a year, and only a couple leaks, one of them due to a faulty bag. I don't really worry much about leaks anymore, and we all know how liberating that can be. Thanks again for posting your videos, you are helping a lot of people.

Same, I use the entire ring and I warm it up [by holding in my armpit] while I'm getting prepping and cleaning my supplies and stoma and then after applying everything I warm it all up with my heating pad at night and it helps to seal it all to get at least 3-4 days of wear time

Thank you Amber. I can not get a consistent seal with the wax seals. Sometimes it's good sometimes terrible. If I get output touching the skin around my stoma I get sores which make it hard for my seal to stick. So... I am looking forward to trying a paste from coloplast. I wouldn't have thought of this if it wasn't for your vlog. I have been an ostamate for just over two years now and had this problem regularly. So thanks for the top tip and thanks for your positive vlogs and making me smile as well as being informative. Much love from the English Lake District. 🙂👍

These videos are so great! Thank you for them! I know that for some people rings are better, and for other people, paste is better. But when I'm talking ONLY about the residue when you remove it, I get way more caked up residue when I remove paste than when I remove a wax ring.

I hated using them at first until I figured out the secret to these is a hair dryer. Warm up the barrier before applying to the wafer and after you peel it Off run warm water over the residue then add adhesive remover works like a charm. I have pyoderma gangrenosum a rare skin condition which causes open wounds. These work well for me.

I really sympathize about the bad skin problems, after surgery. I'm sure that problem, on top of everything else, was very tough to manage. Tough lady. The wax rings don't work for me, either. They make the bag twice as likely to start leaking, or just blow off, especially when bending over, or while sleeping. Thanks for the info. I will try the Adept paste.

Amber....The paste just "disappears" on me in a day, due to my quite "liquidy" output, leaving skin directly around the stoma unprotected!! Yes, I apply enough paste, but not too much - and my appliance is well cut to my stoma opening size. I also tried using EXACTLY as you said, with 3M Barrier Spray too. There's No way I could leave a bag on using just paste under the wafer for 5 days??

Hi, a couple questions if you have a moment please ? How do you keep your your weight up ? I am a 6ft 115lb male that cannot seem to put on any weight. I eat approx 8 small meals a day though, total I bet I only get 1500 calories. However 100mg of protein dly. In order for the dr. to reverse my stoma I have to get above 130lbs. P rotien is helping keep my muscle and virtually no body fat but I'm so thin. I also have mild case of chronic pancreatitis, which makes it hard to eat what I want...pizza,burgers etc. Also I lose sleep because my bag doesn't stay connected all night. Some nights, the bag comes away and I wake up with a mess on my belly, which, as you can imagine makes it hard to get back to sleep. I saw your video about wax-rings and why you don't use them however I didn't hear anything about adhesive problems ? There's no adhesive properties they say to the paste's, so was wondering how the paste works when placing it directly on the back of the bag ? And the adhesive glues give me a bad rash; I use the silicone barrier strips instead of the glue barrier strip however the silicone doesn't stay when the body heats up...?

Hi Mike, I'm with you on the leaks! So grose! Poop out my butt for 45yrs to wake up bagged is a nightmare, no doubt. But I'm learning to cope. I use the wax rings only because I haven't found a better way to go yet. I wasn't using them at all and found that that was part of MY problem. My other problem is I'm under weight and cannot get above 115. I'm a 6ft 115lb male. I have chronic pancreatitis and that makes it harder to eat what I like, pizza and fast-food. So I drink a lot of protein shakes and fat free peanut butter sandwiches, chicken etc. But my big problem is keeping the bag in place at night while sleeping- the elastic flanges cause skin irritations because of the glue...

pastes are ok but dissolve quick- i can only get about a day, and it's disappeared right around the stoma (lasts a bit longer out further from stoma)- We need a strong glue to cement the pouch to skin- the ones that are on market now are basically either latex or silicon, and they break down very quickly too- have tried everything -but to no avail=- the paste probably does the best- but still inadequate for iliostomies- only get a day- trying to go to risks leaks for sure- even at 1 day, it sometimes doesn't seal well- sure wish there was a strong glue even if it needed a remover to remove- would like the security of knowing the pouch is practically welded onto skin and wont leak regardless of activity or sweating- -

Did my first barrier change for my wife tonight and I’m a nervous wreck. We got it on after lots of fumbling even after I reviewed a few youtube videos about ileostomy bag changes. My question: you mentioned a spray on skin barrier also an alcohol free paste. Could you mention the brands again? And I used the barrier ring that came with the Hollister kit. I sort of screwed it up a bit but I think I got it on ok. So far no leaks. Changing the bag was ok but the barrier change(1st time) was nerve wracking to me. Nurse coming day after tomorrow to show me how to get it done. We had to do it tonight because the barrier was starting to peel off. I’m gonna get it right yet. Just hope my skittishness doesn’t get to my wife too much. BTW I loved your approach to the subject.

I am 4 weeks post surgery and in the past 2 weeks I have been fighting leaks. I am going thru a wafer a day. In the hospital the ostomy nurse had me use a ring. That was fine until my stoma shrunk and suddenly stitches and lumps stuck up all around the base. Ostomy nurse thought I was cutting wafer too small and put one on me cut larger and out of round with a thick eakin ring. That set up caused my first blow out. Like said in the video I can not get anything to stick on thos stitches and bumps. I tried putting a thin layer of paste around my stoma then putting on wafer with ring molded to the opening. Again about 24 hrs is all I could get. When removed the paste was gone and poo had gone under ring. I changed it in time to prevent skin break down. It still stung touching. Tonight I am trying just a little paste. Again a thin layer directly over the stitches around the base. I went back to my messured opening size. Then put a thin bead around wafer opening. My stoma is a good outee. It's flatter on top and slightly concave under. Wider at the bottom than top. What I find is the rings do swell when wet by design. But for me this lifts the wafer causing a gap allowing more poo to reach the ring. Slowly the ring swells so much the wafer is raised almost a half inch and poo gets in and under the ring. Every change I have done in the past 10 has a swollen ring covered in poo and blood. Hopefully no ring will give me more than a day. Otherwise I will use my 90 day supply in weeks. Sure can't afford that.

I was discouraged with all the blow outs that I had and my skin got the brunt of it. I have an ileostomy. I changed the barrier because of the wrinkles that I had thought that would solve the problem, & that helped but needed to do more. Well I just kept going on line trying to get ideas from other people with this problem. In short I'll tell you how I actually resolved my problem from going 1or 2 days of changing my appliance to now up to 5 to 6 days of change just by reading some of the ostomates ideas. Now mind you this is the way I resolved it & hopefully you can get some ideas that I have received from others that paste it together. So here goes: I shower with appliance off and clean dry the stoma real good, I then cover the stoma with gauzed so to keep the skin as dry as possible, then I use stoma powder brush the excess off and over the powder I cover it with Cavilon no sting barrier wipes and let that dry. Following that I heat up my adapt cera ring with my hair dryer on low for a few seconds then I add it directly around my stoma pressing all around the edge to make a good seal (don't know if it makes a difference but its been working well so I do it) after that I remove the plastic of the back of my barrier and again I heat the barrier up as well and then apply it making sure it sits well in the wrinkle areas, I also press very lightly around the outside of the stoma area of the barrier to give an extra secured seal (again that's my choice to do that). I then put on my pouch and cover the center with both my hands for a minute for that extra bonding. And now I'm done. PS: Also as of lately for extra security because of my irregular skin I have also used 2 Adapt Barrier Extenders . I sure hope this has given you some ideas and please keep trying all you can...that's what I did and it finally worked. Best of luck I sure hope you can resolve your issue.

Hey ma'am. First I want to thank you for what you do to help others. I have had my illeostomy for 39 years, so when I started out there was minimal options and help. Luckily, i have had no problems, until recently. I developed a sore and have had trouble getting it 100% healed. I thought I did for over two months and then it showed up again. Really small, but the material i used (stomahesve wafer) seems to cause it to reappear. I think a perfect environment. !st question, what do you use to treat the sore? 2nd question is there a product which sticks well, but doesn't leak. I have tired Hollister and cannot get them to last more than a day or two, before they start leaking. I have tried both rings and only the wafer itself. Again, thank you. Carl

Carl. Try the HOLLISTER CERARING under the Hollister CERA PLUS BAG WITH TAPE BORDER. I get NO LEAKS. This system is bombproof for me.....and I have a very "liquidy" output!! Teddy UK.

I have a strange shaped stoma. I actually use both. I put half a ring underneath the put paste all around then put the flange. Another weird thing is if i put paste directly on the flange i have odor and/or leaks. I wish i knew why i have to put it directly around my stoma.

Use Stoma Powder and 3M Barrier Spray in thin layers. Apply spray, powder, spray, powder for about 3 "layers", finishing with spray. TRIO ELISSE Barrier Spray is also superb, more sticky, so it helps the appliance stick on better. I then use the HOLLISTER CERA RING and HOLLISTER CERAPLUS BAG, with tape border. Must be the CERA range, available in various options from HOLLISTER. Hope this helps. Teddy UK.

New to this. Learning for a friend. What the steps? Do you put the 3m directly on skin or flange? Confused
@Teddibere1
@Teddibere1 3 жыл бұрын
You SPRAY the 3m onto skin around the stoma. TRIO ELISSE is another spray you can get. It is SUPERB....and it also helps the bag stick on much better!! There are reviews on here on TRIO ELISSE Barrier Spray.

Hello Amber, I enjoy your tips for the newer users. Unfortunately I never had any of that when I had my Ostomy surgery 34 years ago. I had to learn everything on my own. Technology has improved the product's we use today versus what was available 60 years ago. Keep up the good work. I hope you'll cover everything that I had to learn on my own. Hi Allan, any insight on adhesive issues ? I find the skin irritations from the glue used in the ostomy products are hard to get away from without using silicone, which don't have the same quality adhesive properties as the elastic flanges and colostomy bags. Do you have any recommendations for the best Non Irritable adhesive colostomy products ? Thank you

@@jeffreyspiewak8729 Good evening Jeffrey, I'm sorry to be getting back to you so late. I generally don't have much time to look at Amber's videos, not to mention respond to questions. I use to apply past for years around the stoma. They only had one type three decades ago. I believe they have A substitute that doesn't irritate the skin. I stopped using past years ago & switched to A pre sized barrier ring from Coloplast . It's worked better then anything else I've tried over the years. Hope this helps. If not, make an appointment with an ostomy nurse. Take care, and good luck. Sincerely: A Crane

For me the stomaheisive paste works alot better than the adapt paste plus instead of putting the past directly on the appliance, I put the paste around the stomach before putting the pouch on. Sometimes my aim isn't real good so by putting the paste around the stoma, I can see that the paste is snug around the stoma.

I'f you've got any REALLY sore or raw skin around the stoma, be prepared to hit the roof with pain when you apply Stomahesive. It contains alcohol. I was actually in tears with the stinging and pain. Adapt and Coloplast Brava pastes do not contain alcohol.

I to use Adapt paste. But since my stoma opening is oblong and the length is 2 and 3/4 inches I have to use very large barriers. I cut the hole for my stoma and like you I put the paste on the barrier. When I attached the barrier one of the things I do is a press inside of the attachment ring to make sure that the barrier is sealed to my skin. Then I press the tape outside of the attachment ring. Then I snap the bag on. It's just very important to me that since I use the paste I want to make sure that the barrier seals to the skin.

I love your advice and watch this channel all the time for my "Monster's" needs but I totally luv the barrier rings,(at least the brand I've tried Hollister/Adapt). I have found that those with "innies" ,(like my stoma is), seem to use the rings more than those with level or 'outie' stomas? Interesting??? :) keep up the great info. :)

You guys that use this paste... question: do you have colstomy or ileostomy? I have ileostomy and I've had a really hard time looking for a product that lasts more than 12 hours without starting to leak because the output is so abrasive 😪 In my case the rings last longer than the pastes I've tried (karaya and Adapt paste).

I have an ileostomy. About 1year now. Mine is very inverted though. Ive been using Hollister 2piece system. Was having lots of leakage just using paste (Stomahesive) so i decided to use an Eakin seal (cohesive slims 839005) and then a little paste over that and now only tend to get a small leak about once per month. 🤞🤞 Get into the group "Inspire". The ostomates in that group are amazing and sooo helpful. All the best.

Yeah I like paste better than rings. I’m so sorry you had all those leaks at first, I know that’s a horrible feeling. One thing I noticed though is that you are using Hollister products. I used Convayfor 20 plus years until my insurance changed and for some reason would only authorize Hollister products for me. I gotta say that was the absolute worst eight months of my life, because those wafers leaked on me every single time, they were HORRIBLE. I never got more than two days without a leak and usually only got one day out of those wafers. The wax would constantly break apart and separate and start leaking, and this would start happening usually within a few hours of changing it, EVERY SINGLE TIME. I can’t believe they make such an inferior product, especially for ostomates. Luckily I was allowed to switch back to ConvaTec and everything was fine once again and no leaks.

I have had multiple ostomy surgeries myself over a 20+ years long time span, and for similar reasons I also don't use the rings. I have much better luck with the paste. There are several different brands of paste on the market, and my favorite is the Stomahesive brand of paste. For me personally I like that particular brand better because it is slightly thicker than Adapt, so for me it forms a better barrier against leakage, and if you let it "tack up" a bit, it can be pushed around easier as a "bead" to conform more closely to the edge of the stoma. There are more paste brands on the market than just the two best known ones that I mentioned, and they all have their pros and cons, newbies shouldn't get disheartened if the first or second paste brand doesn't work as well for they as they hoped it would.
