How to Change and Shim a Starter Motor || Jeep Mods E12

Changing a starter motor on your own can save you a lot of money. There's not much to it if you want to do it yourself, only 2 bolts and a couple of wires on most cars. Here we change the starter on a YJ Jeep Wrangler 1994.

Hi Chris, i heard a clicking when you started your jeep that sounds similar to mine. When you fixed your starter did the clicking go away? What kind of shims did you get?

We could not get the first starter to shine correctly and remove the grinding so we took it back and had them replace it. The new started we got did not need shims, but the shims I got for it where for a Chevy.

Hi. So your starter teeth were Engaging the flywheel TO DEEPLY...and that is why you had to insert a shim, (to space Back the starter teeth engagement a little bit).?? correct.??

Yes, shims move the starter teeth further from the flywheel.

Why the shims? I just put a new starter in my 93 YJ today and didn't bother putting the old shim back in. I couldn't tell if the old starter was factory or not. Thanks!

You only need shims if the starter gear teeth need to move closer or further away from the flywheel teeth. I the starter needs shims and you don't use them, you can damage the starter and flywheel teeth.

@@ChrisDoesWhat Thanks man, I put a new starter in, without the shim and it starts great now, No more grinding or screeching. Leaving the shim out still makes me a little nervous though.

@@Zoso981 If you are nervous about it, put a marking compound on the teeth, and then turn it over. Then take it off and check how the gears are messing together. I have seen where the teeth have been to shallow and did not grind until the teeth started sheering off.
