I found the video very helpful . I do not have a plastic setting block however it looks like the new holders are totally predetermined and you do not need the block ? no worries . I think it should be do able now . the old planer blades that I removed were in about 6 pieces . Its amazing that the machine still worked and whats more no flying projectiles . Thanks Alex

Hi alex . looks like the 3mm hss pieces were blades in my case . they work really well and are a lot more powerful . when they need to be sharpened i guess its possible to chuck them on a oil stone . I can see how confusing it is though with all the products around . I did not have a setting block so i guessed and made the distance from the tip of the blade to the back of the screw attachment thing 35 mm .... i checked both sides for straight and it worked very well . thanks

the very narrow carbide pieces are the cutters, everything else is just there to hold it all together,since its spinning at 30,000 rpm or so! glad it all worked out for you!

Hi Alex . ran out of words on my last reply . So if I understand your reply are you saying that the HSS 3mm plate is a holder and not a blade ? IT seems to be advertised as a blade and it does have a very shap edge . Or is it just designed to reinforce the small reversible blades in a better way ? Thanks
@mralexdenny11 жыл бұрын
Agree and correct as far as i understand it! Basically that HSS piece then has the small black metal bracket screwed to it,! then that unit fits onto the drum, then you slide in the new "blades" which are the thin frail looking pieces in carbide.. good questions.. i probably need to do a two part updated vid..!

Do you have to have the old smaller blade to set the new one correctly?
@actimasprime622611 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex . This is the first time i have tried to change planer blades . I bought some new 3 mm blades to go into the makita 1902 I have . just a little confused as i do not have one of the plastic setting blocks that are on your vid . any idea of the measurements of the plastic block ? Also it shows that you are reinserting the small planer blades aswell . The way it looks to me is that the new 3 mm blades are made to go in by themselves without the need of the small blades . correct ???
@actimasprime622611 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex . thanks for the reply . Yeah I may be calling the brand new 3mm plates (blades ??? ) .... is that what you call the holder ? . To me it looks like the 3mm HSS pieces have a sharp edge on them for cutting or is it purely to reinforce the small disposable blades that are in the planer ? . Yes when i took the blade clamps off the small blades were completely shattered into about 5 pieces . Surprising they still worked for so long .Not sure on what the new 3 mm plates are for
@mralexdenny11 жыл бұрын
Hello Hamish, Basically the the small black plastic block is for setting the "distance" on the blades. Distance pertains to the "depth" setting, since the blades are locked in with no adjustments. That pesky block came with the original planer kit in the blue plastic case. There is only the one set of blades, although they are "reversible" ,but i find that they are usually cracked when they are removed.The other "plate" is the holder. lit me know if i'm on the right track here !

Hi Alex . i undertand now after seeing the video again . looks like i need to buy some planer blades aswell . pretty confusing as the holders are advertised as blades . any idea of the measurements on that pesky block ? maybe I can make one .

Hi Alex . ok got it . one question " Why do the holders have a very sharp edge on them ? Thanks
@mralexdenny11 жыл бұрын
the "blades" are the carbide ,double edged pieces and the "flat stock" high speed steel pieces are the holders. then the curved tin pieces with the bolt holes are the pieces that hold everything together! does that help?

Hi ya was wondering if the block with the makita planer would work on a old hitach planer, thanks

hope it helped! im getting ready to take the whole thing apart and chance the bearings ,(two different sets)and the belt , since mine is well worn after 10 years, will post the (how to) version of that !
@harryksadventure92367 жыл бұрын
Why did you add the straight thin blade under the flat blade? I would think that would be unsafe, you have to cutting edges
@mralexdenny7 жыл бұрын
Harry K hello, well yes the thin flat blade is actually the cutter and the large flat high-speed steel pieces is what holds it all together--

Hi alex . not too sure if you got my reply the first time . Basically the thing I am unsure about is what the after market HSS 3mm planer blades are for . Are they used to replace the smaller style blades or are they used to reinforce the original style blades. To me it looks like the 3mm blades are designed to go into the planer without the need to use the smaller original blades . Ofcourse I could be totally wrong here . The new ones do look like blades .
@PeaceIndian Жыл бұрын
This is a good question - if the new style blades are better and are considered replacements, why are we putting the skinny blade back in? I would think they are not needed!

How can I place both of the planer blades evenly if I don't have a block
@mralexdenny10 жыл бұрын
Check in with any hardware store/makita dealer, in the tool section and someone will have one kicking around, in that "miscellaneous " box. My original one came with the plane in a blue plastic box with the first planer i bought.

Just picked up the same planer for a great deal and it looks like it hasn't been used. What's the benefit of this kit upgrade? It must be a pretty solid planer if you've had yours for 10 years and it's still going.
@mralexdenny10 жыл бұрын
I actually have two and one is near 18 years old i think. The benefit of the upgrade was that it was a better mounting system or "hold down" I guess the other reason was that is the kit the tool guy sold me and that was how they were packaged.. wanted to give it a try and make a video thanks for your comment!
@judyswanson43157 жыл бұрын
It still needs the blade slivers its not a resharpenable blade on there. OP is right. Thanks for the video helped me :)

Wow, this looks really dangerous. This planer had been upgraded to the new carbide double sided blades and someone sold him HSS blades which he installed and then put the carbide blades under the HSS blades. I wonder if they have flown out yet?? Use one system or the other, do not mix them like this. Crazy.
@mralexdenny9 жыл бұрын
+24revealer Actually the "blades" are the thin carbide reversible blades that are held down by the high speed steel "Plates" No carbide danger here- only if you run over a piece of steel then the blades will crack.

+Alex Denny I'm still confused though. There are no slots on the thick blade for the smaller blade to slide into. How would I ever be able to get the carbide blade set right? Or am I doing this wrong and the high speed steel thick blades actually replace the carbide blade as well? I don't get why they'd call the thick plate a blade if it actually isn't the blade.

Maybe i need to redo this video for clarification--
@jessmdevans9 жыл бұрын
actually you dont need the wood razors with those new plates, the new plate has a razor edge you can shave with. it makes it a one piece design and no longer a 2 piece....the old blade plate had a groove cut in the back of it to receive the grove of the razor, the new one is flat, the razor is now redundant. the new plate is now the holder and blade all in one...matter of fact because of the new design, the wood razors have been discontinued www.ereplacementparts.com/planing-knife-p-179508.html

Numerous comments here express confusion about the blade type. I was also confused until I read through Makita's manual for this tool. This video does NOT show the proper process for replacing blades on this planer, and following these instructions could indeed result in a very dangerous tool. Those thin little carbide "sticks" are what Makita calls "mini blades". They also make larger blades, either carbide or HSS. These are more durable and can be resharpened. They should not be confused with the mounting plates, and should definitely not be used in conjunction with the mini blades. Hamish Carey is describing this confusion and with just cause, and the video's author does not understand or address his question, despite it being asked numerous times. For safety's sake, this video should be removed for good.

So irritating to watch this. Why do you shake the pieces as you show them? Hold them still so we can see them! And it's so unclear as to exactly what pieces are original and what comes with the upgrade 'kit'. Why not show the kit with the included pieces? Right now I feel like stabbing my eyes with a fork! Can you please redo this video given all the questionable responses? And maybe put the camera overhead so your hands are not blocking the view as you install the pieces onto the machine. Thanks anyway for taking the time to attempt showing a 'how to' video. I've subscribed and hope to see this video redone.
