Replacing the front coil springs on an e60 is literally a 20 minute job, genuinely. 1) Disconnect top of drop link 2) if its driver side, disconnect headlight rod 3) Unclip ABS sensor and brake flexi from strut 4) Compress spring with hand held spring compressors whilst strut is still fitted to car 5) Support strut at bottom using trolley jack 6) Open bonnet and Remove 3 x 13mm strut mount nuts 7) lower trolley jack to allow assembly to drop, remove trolley jack 8) Compress the strut by hand enough to pop the top out under the wheel arch 9) Undo top strut centre nut (Rattle gun works well without having to hold centre with torx) 10) Remove old spring 11) Compress the new spring, fit to strut 12) Reverse all of the above to refit No need to piss about with the ball joint, control arms, or even the plastic sheilds. You're welcome... 👍

I can verify this process works perfectly. I replaced a snapped spring in literally 30 mins and I’m not a mechanic! My spring compressors wouldn’t compress the spring enough to get the strut and top mount under the wing, so left the top mount off, pushed the spring and strut under the wing and then fitted the top mount on under the arch. I then lifted it into position with a trolley Jack and put all the nuts on in one go. Saved hours of work. Thanks 👍🏻

What about the pinch bolt?

@@GeorgeAusters I just used this process to replace the spring. I didn’t replace the shock absorber. 👍🏻

unclear you mean where is the plastic cover removal to get to the bolt at 4:40
@kristoferritzman20614 жыл бұрын
One piece of advice is to remove some of the plastic shields before doing this. It's not shown in the video that this has already been done. Makes for much better access with handtools and a like when you need to get in with heavier gear to dislodge everything that's jammed on everywhere.

Should these be torqued under load or does it not matter?
@autodocuk6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback! Unfortunately, we missed this point, but when doing replacement, it is necessary to сlamp the thread joint by a torque wrench with the specified tightening torque, that is recommended by a manufacturer. Best regards, Autodoc.

It's a good tutorial but lifes not that easy. Live in salty areas and corrosion takes hold....you'll spend hours getting those feckin bolts off. Believe me.

not possible 4:40. where is the plastic shields? why do you not show removal in the video??????? and anyway it is not pessary to remove this you can just push weight on the disc assembly downwards and the whole spring shock assembly can be brought under the wheel arch and then use a hand held spring compressor no need to remover shock or plastics
