FYI, for any of you DIY'ers, you can buy a new vent valve for $40 USD from AliExpress, that is really one the most common parts that fails on these new style Wabco pumps. The soft flexible membrane piston rings last much longer on these than the old plastic styles piston rings, so you don't really loose compression from the cylinder. And while that reed valve looked rusty, they still function just fine after a cleaning. Don't pay $650 USD for a new rebuilt pump, it's super easy to change the valve and dry out the desiccant . If you really need a full rebuild, do it yourself. All of the parts are available and there is not a lot to it. I have rebuilt over a dozen pumps for family and forum friends and takes 20 minutes max, mostly waiting around for the desiccant balls to dry out in the microwave. I do understand why Dan replaced the pump though.

Another good one Dan! This actually happened in our shop on a Range Rover a couple of years ago, and it took my (self-proclaimed Genius) boss 3 days to fix it. By chance of course, and only after replacing almost all the components in the air suspension system . When nothing else worked, he said "We might as well put a new compressor in (another $1500) so we'll have a complete new system. We'll tell the customer that everything was destroyed in the accident." I'm sure most of the parts were ok, but we didn't get involved. He always said " I WILL DIAGNOSE AND TELL YOU GUYS WHAT TO DO". Later on he bench tested the old compressor and sure enough it didn't produce any pressure.

Excelent fix Danny thank you for sharing! It was a nice detail to set the language in your scanner to english for this video. I'm about to get a whole box of those blue rubber special multi purpose tools you have! This video reminds me a similar problem I had with a Porsche cayenne Turbo, It was my first air suspension ever, I remember the front of the vehicle was really low so checking air suspension for leaks with some soap and water mix I found that the front left suspension was leaking air so I went ahead and replaced both front air suspension air bags (They sell it apart as one piece on ebay instead of the whole assembly) and also replaced the right side height sensor because the arm pivot was broken, after that for my surprise I could not raised the car with a bi-directional scannner command and also could not even heard the commpressor activating so I checked signals, activation relay and pressure and determined that the compressor need it to be replaced, I did and that fixed the problem, I remember the customer was very happy about the fix but asked me a very simple question I could not answer at that time... he asked me why the compressor failed at the same time the front left suspension failed? After further research I found out that when a air suspension is leaking (In this Porche) the ECU monitors the car height through the "height level sensor" and sends more air to that particular suspension to keep the car height leveled but by doing that the ECU keeps the compressor running more than usual, sometimes depending of the leak it can keep it running all the time and that actually overheat the compressor and eventually damage the unit. So I learned that we need to check first the compressor unit and then also never forget to check for suspension, reservoir tank and air lines leaks in this systems.

I removed the air compressor completely and pulled everything apart and followed the same steps that you did. All componentry looked pretty good and inside the desiccant balls looked pretty dry. From my experience, the compressors usually fail because of leaking air springs that are not replaced until the compressor fails. I have had people replace compressors with leaking springs, only to have the compressor fail again from overuse.

The noise of the pump gives it away. Most pumps fail because the airbags leak so the pump is always running causing it to fault out. Don't forget the airbags. I've had more airbags cause the issues depending if the vehicle is parked level or in a driveway up hill. Vent valves go bad due to water ingress causing corrosion. Good informational video. Actually that is a very, very possible cause!! A 2017 car is too soon for a rear airsping leak. This pump most likely sucked in sea water from the fresh air intake tube, which is located right behind the rear bumper. Dan, you need to build this customer an Airmatic snorkel!!

But when I tried dump solenoid it appears to operate, so I pushed a pipe onto the little end of the solenoid and blew. Didn’t stop the air flow whether it was energised or not. So I’m still thinking this is the issue ?????

I had a 69 Cadillac Eldorado with rear air suspension. It used a vacuum powered air compressor that sat vertically in the engine compartment. That mounting position caused all the accumulated moisture to fill the delicate aluminum pumping mechanism full of water. All the compressors in the scrap yard had the same problem. I finally installed an aftermarket electric compressor and had no more problems.

This car has a towbar fitted, maybe the compressor filled with water when launching a boat?
@loufaiella33545 жыл бұрын
Bingo......that makes sense! That seems like a lot of water/damage for simply condensation. The dryer medium will tell the tale.
@2009bobross4 жыл бұрын
It's not super common in The Netherlands to launch a boat. People that own boats, mostly have it in dry docked, close to their house or in a harbour. People generally use a towbar to hook up a trailer of some sort for vacation or hauling purposes. I own the exact same model of this car, and i've seen 2 moisture issues before: 1 where moisture enters the roof lining via the trunk lid. The other one is similar, when opening the trunk lid and the drain holes are clogged, the water runs all the way down towards the fuse compartment. I replaced a relay that was soaked and made sure to tie-wrap it higher. I've also replaced the Air suspension springs because mine were leaking, so it would be the first thing to do on this model, since it's a common fault.

BMW and Wabco ought to be ashamed. Same problems as before. Even the E61 had the same problems 15 years ago. Pump is placed inside a shield where mud/gravel/moist can come in but not out. And Wabco pump quality is poor. Should have a fail safe switch to turn off when air spring leaks too much.
@Diagnosedan5 жыл бұрын

@Uninfluenceable5 жыл бұрын
it actually does shut off once a leak is detected, (pump not reaching required pressure within given time, 15s I think), and it will NOT allow you to turn it back on during that drive cycle even if you push the raise button, it instead give you malfunction message. However this pump shut-down feature resets every drive/ignition key cycle, so owners tend to ignore it and just keep driving with a leaky air spring. It's a user issue, not a pump issue. I would much rather have the pump come back after a key cycle and at least get me home than have to take it to the dealer immediately.

@@Uninfluenceable I agree, Ian. To some extent. Super cool Dan. I had precisely this problem. I knew didn't have leaks after doing bubble test so it had to be from the pump. I found the pressure o/p problem from the pump by using the finger method but at that point I was stuck thinking a whole new pump was the only option. One last search of the web and I found you. Withing 5 mins of watching the video I had the 12v on the solenoid and I had established that it was sticking thanks to you. I freed it up and refitted and now all good. I have a new part on order but need to wait a week for delivery. Thanks Dan. Great video. Great trouble shooting. Great explanation and Great that you saved me £800 at the repair shop. Regarding the other garage up mention - What REALLY pisses me off is that the car had both bags replaced at the other shop for no reason!!!! That's just lazy or idiotic problem solving and then they pass the cost of their stupidity to the customer. I am no mechanic but I can problem solve and if both bags are flat it has to be a part that is common to both bags that is at fault. That means leaky manifold supply line, pump housing, pump piston/ring seal etc.. Anyway, I am having a rant sorry. Dan your stuff is great keep up the great work.

In the States some people pay a lot of money to have their suspension modified to get that look. And here you are screwing it up. (ha ha) Great self made tool for the scope and thanks for the tear down and the visual of the failed part. I like seeing what's inside components.

Wow, that car is a 2017 with a faulty compressor already?? I cant say much for BMW quality..That other shop should have checked for pressure 1st... You're an excellent mechanic and great teacher Dan

Excellent Job DAN, really liked the tutorial with dis-assembly of the pump ! 2 BIG THUMBS UP !! I run into this type of situation a lot w/ BENZ & BMW where I am at. Here in the area where I am , these shops SHOULD NOT be repairing German Autos ... lol -- It is very frustrating for me to get a BENZ / BMW with an upset customer because of lack of knowledge. I feel bad for the customer more than anything else. Everyone should be REQUIRED to learn & understand every component of a system before trying to repair. Every Factory training seminar for Benz or BMW I go to (all of them ) this is how the instruction is given . Which is why I do not understand that the other shop replaced air springs without complete pressure & component check of the air system ????? --- ALWAYS - Check pump pressure and control valves on vehicles with Air Suspension before replacing components. - EVEN IF YOU THINK THERE IS A CONSISTENT PROBLEM.
@Diagnosedan5 жыл бұрын
You are right, the shop manager told me they had time pressure and desided to replace the airsprings because that was the most common problem😪
@nickv40735 жыл бұрын
Truth is most shops don't want to work on Benz and BMW's. Some shops won't even attempt it.
@armyvet925 жыл бұрын
THANKS DAN !! Even factory "TSB'S" can be easily mis-interpreted
@armyvet925 жыл бұрын
NICK V -- Yes Sir ! Very accurate statement and absolutely correct but I do wish they would not attempt if they dont know also. ( Porsche is the biggest one for me ) Sometimes I have found out when a car shows up that a Tech at a shops where they do not want to touch these cars, is maybe kind of new or has just come out of the local community trade school jumping in feet first when the shop is not properly equipped or trained for this. I applaud the motivation but have to frown on the lack of knowledge

We don't see a lot of rust anymore. In the old days we had more of that but materials improved. It also depends on where you live of course. I must say the cars look alot cleaner on camera than in reality🤣

Dan, love the diagnostics! But, that is a pre-LCI BMW F11 5-series build from 2011 - 2013. Air suspension goes bad all the times on that specific model and build years. In the later LCI versions, very little air suspension problems.

I just came across this video. I went ahead with spring conversion on my e61 (to be fitted soon) as the EHC module have failed. I have found that these systems are way too complicated for what they are. I have seen a lot of happy guys after doing this, so for me, this was the simple answer and I can always go back to the air suspension. Full conversion kits are available on eBay for a range of BMWs cost is around £200 + coding (you can code it yourself if You know what are You doing...) which is about £50 - 70. I will see how easy it is to fit within next couple of days. If You are interested send me a message for updates. FYI i do not sell or do any coding so this is only my humble opinion. Edit: forgot to mention peace of mind after this... No problems with compressor, air bags, hoses, filter, electronics.

Nice one Dan, It was good to find out what caused the failure. And even better to know after market parts are available to rebuild it if required. All too often the end user is unable to get the parts to rebuild (See Range Rover) With it being just two years old would the warrenty cover it? I guess BMW should really re design the pump system to ensure dry air in all climatic conditions
@TonyRule5 жыл бұрын
I too would have thought it would still be under manufacturer's warranty.

The car was imported from another country and than in some cases the Local reseller doesn't provide waranty.
