Thanks so much for this video on changing a timing belt on a VW Passat TDI. I used it every step of the way to change the TB in my wife's Passat and the video was totally invaluable. Could not and would not have done the job without your video!!

I think you forgot to show that you reconnected the 2 coolant hoses that you initially drained the coolant from. I'm sure someone would realize this when they start refilling the coolant reservoir 😁. Other than that, awesome video - very thorough and detailed. The only way you could make it better is if your mechanic actually spoke and explained important steps instead of just pointing - people might not understand what is going on like the TDC and tensioner markings, or the VCDS fuel pump engaging to bleed the air from the fuel lines. Also I prefer ft-lbs over Nm but I'm just being nitpicky 😉. Glad you got rid of the dorky overalls and cap uniform! Great video! Keep up the good work!

Really great video in terms of presentation, camera angles and views. Just need to make sure you do a final belt adjustment after hand cranking the motor 2 rev, after installing the belt. Typically, you would re-insert the crank lock and see if the cam lock is aligned and verify the HPFP as well, often you need to make cam sprocket adjustments. Your video showed the tech begin installing the belt covers as soon as he cranked it over (not sure if the adjustments were missed or not preformed?) Also, always recommended to disconnect the neg lead on the battery before doing this job, since the driver door opening will cycle the fuel pump, always best to isolate the electrical system. And, the engine mount bolts are TTY bolts - should replace with new. But, really good video a competent DIY'er should be able to follow this - you have all the details covered :)

Great video Autodoc, very helpful. But why use sealant on waterpump gasket? I heard to never to do that.
@autodocuk4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! It all depends on the state of the adjacent plane of the pump, in our case, there were many scuffs on the plane, which is why it was decided to apply additional sealant. Best Regards, Autodoc team

Thanks for this guide. the workshop manual says to renew (i.e. replace) the engine mount bolts as they are torque to yield or stretch bolts. does the timing kit come with these?
@autodocuk Жыл бұрын
You can find this information in the technical documentation of the vehicle repair. The availability of bolts in the kit should be checked with the specific manufacturer whose kit you want to purchase.

Why did u loosen the camshaft n crankshaft bolts when u already set it to tdc? Abit confused here
@alendanmark4 жыл бұрын
I think because it is easier to align the belt. It is only the sprockets that rotate, not the whole shaft. You see how he turns the sprocket all the way clockwise? That is because when the belt comes around, starting from crankshaft counterclockwise, the belt pushes the sprockets back to center when tension is put on the tensioner. Hope it makes sense.
@ntonytay4 жыл бұрын
@@alendanmark yeah that makes sense. Ive seen someone just turn the camshaft to clockwise alittle, then with the belt installed, it will pull back to the mark. I believe it makes sense. Thanks

Could incorrect timing (changed timing belt), cause a no spark situation?
@alendanmark4 жыл бұрын
In older cars with distributor the spark would just be in incorrect timing. New cars could theoretically cut spark if incorrect timing is detected by sensors, i dont know if any cars actually use a system like that.
