Note for those who are doing the job with a filter without an arrow. Small tube goes in towards engine. Big tube towards tank line. ❤️

I’m one of those unlucky Jeep owners that has the fuel filter inside the fuel tank. At least the oil filter isn’t inside the oil pan. So the engineers heads were only 1/2 up their asses. How stupid that you have to drop the entire fuel tank to change a filter.

@laragreene83284 жыл бұрын
Couldnt you clamp off the fuel lines before removing them?? or is the gas coming from the old filter? In my VW Beetle many years ago all I had to do was clamp off the fuel lines 👍 I never got a drop of gas on me.

A wide mouth funnel with a foot of small diameter hose attached (directed into a tall jug or small gasoline can makes catching that fuel a bit easier. Kind of awkward trying to hold up a bigger pan etc. Works for me! Fantastic demo Matt! 👌

just to clear some issues up 97 and up cherokees have the fuel filter built right into the fuel pump module and have no choice but to replace the whole assembly meaning yep you guessed it drop the tank and pray you dont have alot of gas lol once its out take the old one out drain the gas and take the vent hose off and its clip and then use a little bit of oil to lube up the gasket so its easier to put in as it slides in and doesnt roll the gasket inside and heres the tricky part unless its just mine just keep screwing the lock ring it feels like its going on sideways and all sorts of binding but just keep screwing and tap it with a hammer and eventually itll pop on correctly i couldnt find an easier way but once its all together pop your vent hose and clips on pop it all back in and plug everything and reconnect everything and enjoy your new pump for more info check out 97 and up fuel pump videos on youtube there is one where i used and made life so much easier mines just a quick guide
@shineything44447 жыл бұрын
oh also if your fuel pump still works remove the shrader valve from the check port on the fuel rail and jump the relay with a paper clip and get as much gas as you can out trust me it helps mine was shot and took 3 hours to drain but i had time lol so i focused on getting the bolts and everything prepped to be removed once the gas is out and then remove the straps (which WILL rust and be a pita to remove so dont be shocked if you break them) then remove the shield on the fill neck and vent pipes then the connector push the little red tab and pop it off along with the vent hose and fuel line (also be sure to relief the pressure with that check port as mentioned before) and pray to god gas doesnt spray into your face and eyes as it burns quite alot but if you do wash your face off and then after a few minutes of bitching and cursing that you hate every single thing possible that you see and come across and insult your cat low and behold the tank is ready to be removed

Mr. Magnificent that's probably the charcoal filter that filters fuel vapors from the breather hose. I have a 98 XJ Sport as well. There are sock filters on the pump in the tank, but there's also a fuel pressure regulator/filter at the top of the fuel pump on the exterior of the the tank.

do the fuel lines have to be bleed/burped to remove the air introduced into the lines during the filter replacement?

no, usually it'll just crank back up albeit after a few more seconds than normal. If it has trouble then you can certainly try bleeding the air through the shrader valve on the fuel rail.

This is a long shot but does anyone know what that hose that comes out of the top of the brake line "block" and goes into the frame behind the fuel filter is? It's only on the left rear and mine is leaking bad and I don't know what it is or how to replace it.
@BeAFixer Жыл бұрын
This is the rear axle breather line. A passage goes right through that "block" into the axle. It vents into the frame behind fuel filter to prevent getting the end of the line plugged or sucking water into the axle. Axles need to be vented or there will be a pressure diff inside as temperature changes which can cause axle seals, pinion seal, or diff cover gaskets to leak. The vent line should only contain air and is not pressurized. If it's leaking gear oil it might mean you have a bad connection (remove nipple/screw, clean up threads, apply teflon tape when re-assembling), or line is plugged and pressure is building up in your axle, or you have overfilled your diff with gear oil, or parked on significant slope so all gear oil is draining from diff into your left axle tube). A replacement "block" can be purchase at Rock Auto (search for "brake hose, rear center). The breather hose can be replaced with any petroleum compatible hose and ordinary hose clamps (any fuel line of correct diameter). Aside: it's fairly common on offroad builds to install a longer breather hose to vent higher up. Basically a snorkel for your axle. It allows crossing deep water without sucking water into the axle (water crossing will cool the axle causing pressure inside to drop quickly which will suck water into the breather tube if the end of the tube is under water).
