Oil change. This video teaches you how to change your oil in your car or truck in less than five minutes. Changing oil is cheap and easy. Every 5000 miles you need to change your oil and oil filter. It can save you a bunch of money if you do it yourself and you know it gets done correctly. This is a Ford Ranger but the concept for every car is the same. Drain the oil, change the filter, put new oil in and that is all!

Make sure you have drained all the oil out first. Put in half a qt. less than manual requires, run engine for 30 seconds, stop for at least 5 min, check oil level. Add to full. Better to slightly under fill than over fill. Over filling oil can cause several problems, don't do it.
@robertt9342
@robertt9342 2 жыл бұрын
@@x-man5056 . Also depends on the manual and whether the capacity included the filter. While I agree that that it’s best to be conservative, it’s unlikely you’d overfill the engine at all or to a significant degree to cause damage by putting in the exact amount specified in the manual, assuming you properly drained the oil.
@x-man5056
@x-man5056 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertt9342 Some engines are sensitive to oil overfill. The PCV can get immersed in oil and cause some issues when it sucks it up into the intake. Also valve cover leaks, burnt oil smell.
@robertt9342
@robertt9342 2 жыл бұрын
@@x-man5056 . All true. I am not advocating for overfilling, but I do find it strange that the owners manual would tell you the capacity of a dry engine vs a a wet one. That sounds like a shop manual thing. I guess it might also come down to what you trust more, the manual and who wrote it or the dipstick and the manufacturing process of the dipstick. The situation you describe sounds more likely to occur if you grossly overfill the engine oil, not marginally overfill. Also if the engine is that sensitive to filling then maybe you shouldn’t “fill” the oil at all.

Crazy he used a towel as an air filter! Thanks for the tips! It is tough to fill the oil filter on this car because it is sideways, but I do it on my other cars that have the filter straight up and down. As for using new oil vs old oil as gasket lube, it honestly doesn't make a difference. But good tips none the less..

One good tip for draining the oil is to ensure the pan has enough room to catch the oil once it's almost done and drips straight down but also far enough that it catches it when it first comes out and shoots out kinda far.

Yes, if the drain hole is horizontal it squirts out like a hose pipe. It can over-shoot your drain tray and it can be scalding hot if the engine has been running. It could go in your face. It is also very difficult to handle a container full of oil, especially while you are lying down. I spread newspaper everywhere.
@robertt9342
@robertt9342 2 жыл бұрын
You could just reposition the pan as the oil drains.
@robertt9342
@robertt9342 2 жыл бұрын
@@dukenukem5768 . Use a container similar to what was use in the video, it’s easy to move around. I never had issues with changing the oil that’s been warmed up. I find it empties out quicker and think it leaves marginally less in the engine. I probably would recommend to change it with the engine at full temp, but you could always let it cool a bit for like 15 minutes if we’re just driving around for a bit beforehand. Also, you probably shouldn’t change your oil looking directly up at the drain plug, not sure how you would otherwise get it in your face. I am lying an half arms distance away parallel with the plug, so it’s pretty hard for the oil to drain onto me.
@dukenukem5768

@@robertt9342 Good advice, but my engine (a Merc 3.0 V6 diesel) holds 10 litres so I need to drain the oil in 3 or 4 batches. I therefore need to interupt the flow a couple of times by putting the plug back in temporarily, and when doing that it is lilkley to squirt in all directions as well as scald your hand if it is hot.

Hey Chris, maybe you could post a video about this. I want to spread the word. After an oil change, if people will take a drill bit or a punch and poke a hole in the back of the oil filter, it will let all the old oil trapped in flow out. You would be very surprised how much comes out, especially on big filters like FL-1A and FL-820s. Every drop of oil we can keep out of landfills the better right? Great videos! Keep em coming. Just an FYI for everyone out there that should be monitoring your oil level, don't depend on the service station you have your oil changed at to maintain your oil level in the proper range. Take personal responsibility for YOUR vehicle. Engines start using oil for any reason or NO REASON. It's not your service stations fault if YOU let your oil level go too low and severe engine damage occurs. I also recommend checking the oil level at every 3rd or 4th gas fill. As long as the oil is in the operating range, eather the cross hatch area, or between the high and low marks on the dipstick, then the level is fine. If it drops below the low mark, then add enough oil to the engine to bring it back into the operating range. It does not need to be at the full mark, just in the operating range. I go by at least half ways up the operating range or more. AND USE THE EXACT SAME BRAND OF OIL THAT IS CURRENTLY IN THE ENGINE!!!!!!!!!! If you have Mobil 1 in the engine, top it off with Mobil 1 oil, If you have Pennzoil in the engine, top off with Pennzoil, preferably in the same weight range. If you have 10W30 oil in the engine currently, and only 5W30 is available where you get the oil, as long as it is the same brand, it is fine to top off with the 5W30, again IN THE SAME BRAND AS WHAT IS CURRENTLY IN THE ENGINE!!! Don't pour in some store brand oil to top off unless that same store brand is what's in the engine. Different oil manufacturers use different additives in their oil. Don't take the chance that the additive in the oil in your engine is not compatible with another manufacturers oil additives. If you have conventional oil in the engine, and only synthetic oil is available, again, as long as it's the same brand, it is fine to use that brand. Just take responsibility for YOUR vehicle and it's regular maintenance.

It's probably a replacement cap. I have an almost identical truck ('01 B4000 instead of B3000), and they both take 5W-30 per the owner's manual.

san379 a lot of people rationalize that it costs almost the same thing to have a shop change your oil as it does to change it yourself nowadays. (sure synthetic oils advertise up to 15,000 mile of guaranteed protection) But most shops use cheap filters and the oil you're putting in a vehicle is only as good as the filter you're using. so doing it yourself, you pay the same but are getting a better value out of your oil change. so use a good filter and good synthetic oil and you won't need to change your oil as often which saves you money and hassle in the long run.

Yeah some places you go in for an oil change and they're telling you that you need new rear brakes or something. It's like you were doing an oil change... what possessed you to go near the back of the car? Greed. That's what.

Fallout3sFinest i just did my oil change yesterday on my dakota... traded my shell gas points for oil bottles and the oil filter was on sale 20% off at canadian tire and it got me under the truck on ramps and it needs more oil spray.. my oil change cost me the price of the fram oil filter.. about 4$

Chris... First let me say that I enjoy your videos a lot. I find these write-ups/videos are clear, concise, and well thought-out for the amateur auto. D.I.Y.'er to understand. Allow me to throw in a tip that an old ex-stock car racer and mechanic passed on to me years ago. IF the position of the oil filter allows, it's great if you can pre-fill the new filter with fresh oil before installing it onto the engine. This prevents a very "dry-start" of the engine after the oil change. There's a very true statement that says the majority of engine wear happens when the engine is first started due to the fact that the engine's oil has drained back into the oil pan and away from where it's needed the and that which is all the friction-points of the engine . By prefilling the filter with oil, this "dry-start" wear is minimized by keeping the filter's need to soak-in and start oil circulation. It's been my experience that most engines will accommodate this pre-filling of the oil filter.. Keep-up these great videos!! :D
@Koshunae
@Koshunae 8 жыл бұрын
+Roger Smith He noted that in his other oil change video, which went a little more in depth than this one. The position of this oil filter, however, did not allow for pre-filling. I'm willing to bet if you let your engine run a few minutes before changing the oil, there will be enough residual oil left in the engine to prevent wear in the case you can't prevent a dry start.

It doesnt matter if you take the filter off before it is done draining (except in filters that are upside down). It might actually be better because the oil in the lines that goes to the filter could drain out. Do you know the reason you were taught to wait?

I had a 2010 regular cab ranger with the 2.3L and it was super easy to change the oil. The filter was mounted upside down beside the frame. I could drain the pan and change the filter while still under the truck. Then just refill. I always use Pennzoil.

Since we use van hard as; hauling 3/4 ton of feed monthly & pull a trailer having a ton on it often. Annual trans fluid / filter is a must where we live & the usage.

Purolator filters are actually really good. They got reviewed/tested by multiple independent testers and they were up there with AC Delco, and other top brands. Definitely stay away with fram! Their quality control stinks and sometime the filter medium isnt connected to the metal of the filter allowing oil to just bypass the filter process...
