In this video I show you how to swap out your fluid for fresh in a 2008 Chevy Silverado. This will be the same for chevy and gmc trucks and suv's. It will also be very similar for older models as well.
Things needed:
(2) qrts of Dexron VI
18mm wrench or socket
White lock tight or a new plug
A screw ontop hand pump. ($8-$10 at an autoparts store)
Drain bucket
Torque wrench to torque drain plug to 15 lb ft or hand tighten
15-20 mins
Please remember to not over tighten. These plugs and transfer cases are very soft.

Dealer recommends ATF. Just a heads up ; I own a 2003 H2. Bought it with 77K ok the clock. Changed all the oils as well as the Tcase (with ATF) when I got it. I noticed metal shavings coming out of the Tcase during the first change. Second change after 30k miles, I again noticed metal (aluminum) shavings coming out of the oil. My buddy had the same year H2 and at about 100K, his Tcase exploded. Mechanic found a pile of metal at the bottom of his case. Now I know these Tcases have a pickup tube and pump to pump the oil around. I wasn't taking anymore chances after my buddys tcase grenaded. My 3rd oil change, I changed the ATF out to 75W 90 Gear oil and religiously change all pumpkins every 30k miles. I'm now at 260K miles on original Tcase with no issues. Gear oil still pretty much comes out like new with no metal shavings when changed. Just sayin....

im trying to change my rear diffrential fluid on a 1987 gmc s-15v-6... i didnt see a drain plug,but it does have a long hose,about 1/4 inch i.d., that goes from the diffrential hub and is kinda screwed into close to inside wheel well. i guess that is for adding fluid. and im guessing that i need to pump it in somehow. (as you prob.guessed,i am not much of a mechanic). this was my fathers truck,who has passed away,and i wanted to try to maintain it/keep it running for sentimental reasons,and i cannot afford to hire a mechanic. so,my question is, HOW DO I DRAIN THE FLUID/ADD FLUID? any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.
@jameslee522
@jameslee522 7 жыл бұрын
You drain the fluid by pulling the back cover off. Loosen all the bolts and place a large drain pan under it. You may have to tap it with a hammer to get it to come loose. You will need a new gasket or gasket maker to put it back on. As for filling it, look for a plug or maybe the vent hose your speaking about.

+nonayou damnbusiness Subject: Do Not use Slip Yoke Grease from Bulletin #09-04-17-002C on 4WD Vehicles -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GM Customer Care and Aftersales *URGENT - DISTRIBUTE IMMEDIATELY* DATE: November 4, 2010 SUBJECT: Do Not use Slip Yoke Grease from Bulletin #09-04-17-002C on 4WD Vehicles. MODELS: 2007 - 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Series 2008 - 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe 1500 Series 2007 - 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Series 2008 - 2009 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL 1500 Series Equipped with 4WD (RPO NQG, NQH) TO: Chevrolet/GMC Dealers ATTN: Service Manager and Parts Manager A new grease, part # 19257121 (in Canada, 19257122), was recently released for lubrication of slip yoke splines to repair a condition of a bump feel or clunk noise at stop or from launch on the vehicles equipped with 4L60 Automatic Transmission (RPO M30) and 2WD. Please see Bulletin # 09-04-17-002C for details. Do not use the new grease for lubrication of slip yoke splines on 4WD vehicles. The output shaft in a 4WD transfer case does not have a grease retainer to keep the grease from migrating into the transfer case and mixing with the fluid inside. The new grease is not compatible with the Automatic Transmission fluid used in the transfer case and can cause damage if mixed. Lubricate the splines on 4WD vehicles with Automatic Transmission Fluid, P/N 88861003 (in Canada, 88861004). Please refer to Bulletin # 09-04-21-003B for repairing the bump feel or clunk noise condition on 4WD vehicles.

There is a lot of confusion about proper fluids and most of the time its the dealer just selling their brand of specialized fluid... My truck has a NP241C and GM says to use their M/T fluid and not DEX-VI, but the spec was for DEX-II LOL! New Process Gear builds the transfer case for Chevrolet, Dodge, Jeep and Ford applications, every dealer says to use their brand of ATF or the Auto-Trak type (if required). This is my situation, Amsoil states that Allison TES fluid is recommended over ATF and there is a note about the GM sycromesh fluid 88861800 as the proper stuff... LubeGard has a testimonial to mix 5-oz of their High Friction Modifier (Black Bottle) in Dex-III and that works better than Auto-Trak II fluid. After looking at all the fluids available, I'm running ATF+4 and 3-4 oz LubeGard Red in my NP transfer case because the viscosity is heavy and comparable to the MT fluid; heat transfer is even better than the cheap Dex-III/MerconV fluid from times past and Jeep uses it in a comparable transfer case. A modern transfer case runs a chain and a pump that requires a light oil to lubricate and control heat. I was laughing at the comment about using gear oil and not ATF in this video. Apparently, that person does not know that a NP-203 uses 30W motor oil, a NP-205 uses gear oil and just about all the others use some thin power-train fluid.

+John Bigtimber - Yea if you plan ahead you can get it from eBay for cheap. But if you get it from the Store... They are about $5.00-$8.00 like most People stated here. Another way you can do to save $$$$$.... Buy the Dawn Dish Washing Soap that come in 1 Gallon for $18.00... Take the Pump cause you can always use the Dish Soap :).

Great video, except you used the wrong oil, and now everyone else will use the wrong oil too unless their smart enough to figure it out... If anyone else is going to watch this video prior to doing their work. Do you have a push button 4wd system? Do you have a push button that's says "Auto 4wd"? DO NOT USE THIS OIL. This oil is for transmissions NOT transfer cases! Use AUTO-TRAK II. Item# 10-4017.

Autotrak is not used in 2007 (new body) and up. Do your research or look in your service manual. Page 6-15 of the user manual. Here is one I found if you are to lazy to search. 🙄 www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=cdn.dealereprocess.net/cdn/servicemanuals/chevrolet/2008-silverado1500.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwi8-ovtkefiAhUBPK0KHSiaBvgQFjAAegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw3cx0biL_4LQU8ZiDywdtQs

@@jameslee522 yes i agree with james lee. Safest bet is go by the manual. I have an 07 suburban (obviously not a silverado but practically same engine tranny and transfer case as 1500 trucks that year) with new body style and it still used the auto trak II fluid. Transmission fluid must have started being used in 08 since 2007 was like a cross-over year where they had both the classic body styles and new body styles. Although sure enough, i saw the link that james lee posted and it says transfer case use dexron VI transmission fluid. Service manual will guide you right.
