I wish I was my own mechanic. Glad I found your video, and it really helped me to find the root of my problem. Now I hope that which ever wheel is effected doesn’t pop off and hit someone while I wait to see my mechanic next Tuesday. That would be a bad thing.Note to ones self.... AVOID ANYTHING THAT IS A POTHOLE . One slip up and there goes my tire or tires, depending on how many need to be fixed. Be a scene right out of a movie lol.

the hub/bearing assembly is one piece, which you unbolt and remove and replace as a unit. If you remove the 4 bolts eventually holding it on after removing all the other stuff, and it won't fall out, then hammer it out, they will rust in place over time

Noises can be hard to track down. you can use a laser thermometer to check bearing temps. The hot one is bad. Another method that may work is rotating a tire while touching suspension components such as a spring, or torsion bar while rotating a wheel. You will feel the vibration transfer to the suspension.

Scotty, as a 40 year mechanic, (not quite 50 yet like you) I generally like most of your videos, and I agree with many of your statements, but this video is a little risky for many of the novice mechanics that follow your channel. Cars and trucks of today have a large variety of wheel bearing types. Some of these have very specific torque values. Doing this improperly can have severe consequences. A quick mention of this could save people money and a lot of headaches. Much respect.

Clear and informative but not being terribly mechanically adept I got my local mechanic/garage to do this on my 20 year old Jeep KJ with 130,000 on the clock. Both bearings replaced along with two new tyres, an oil change and MoT... total cost inc parts and labour was £960 ($1200 approx). Expensive, yes. But the only major job on my Jeep after many years motoring. Only other things done have been brakes, tyres, oil changes and timing belt. Great channel and always informative even if you're not a great fan of Jeeps

You can usually buy the assembly the bearings press into with the bearings already in it, but it will cost more.

I understand your comment; this IS easy on what appears to be a front wheel drive, because the rear wheel just free-wheels. rear wheel and all-wheel drive is more difficult as the bearing does need to be pressed out.

Scotty's probably my top advisor when it comes to mechanics. It makes me nervous to see him leave his leg under the rotor, though, because I don't entirely trust jacks.

Scotty please do a video on tips and tricks for rusted wheel bearings. Almost made me cry when you just popped that bearing off so easy. Im on day 5 of this madness. By time you make a video I probably still wont have it off. Thanks. Love your video's!

Scotty Kilmer, I respect you a ton and know you know your shit, but I don't understand a couple things here. You don't use a torque wrench on the axle nut, which is extremely important (many bearings get ruined by improper torque on the axle nut) and you are putting the lug nuts on with an impact wrench, which usually leads to overtightening. Again I know you know your shit, but I am just wondering about those two things.
@crx122
@crx122 8 жыл бұрын
I think that's a very common mistake made, one very easy to commit when you're inexperienced. Starting lugnuts by hand is a necessity, as you know instantly if it's threading on correctly, while an impact gun can crossthread a fastener in an instant. The only time it's ok to use an impact for lugnuts is if you're using a torque stick, even then they have to be started by hand.

+Dennis R I was thinking the same exact thing. He made the whole video, why not mention to torque the nut and lugs to specification?
@crx122
@crx122 8 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Gingiloski I don't think he used a torque wrench at all honestly, which is why he didn't mention it. It makes no sense why he isn't using one, as you cannot reliably judge torque by feel. Improper axle nut torque is downright dangerous and will destroy wheel bearings, while improper lug nut torque will warp rotors if too tight, and obviously if they are too loose you risk them spinning off. I've seen so many snapped wheel studs from people cranking the lugs too tight, and studs also break many times from the lugs being too loose as well, when the lugs begin backing off, the wheel wobbles and destroys the studs through metal fatigue. I have no idea why an experienced mechanic like him is impacting on wheel studs and not using a torque wrench...

I completely agree with everything you said Dennis. I wonder how long that bearing will last with a completely unknown amount of torque on that nut. I'm good with a cheater bar or impact wrench for removal but I strictly use a torque wrench for assembly. It only takes a second to set and you don't run the risk of taking the heads off of bolts or under torqueing them.

Jonathan Gingiloski You sound like you do work correctly and safely, that's great to see. The little extra time you spend to do it right the first time is much better than the time and cost to have to redo the job when your new parts fail, or even worse get seriously injured from something like your wheel flying off after your wheel bearing fails. I've seen brand new wheel bearings fail after a few thousand miles from people who replaced them and didn't torque the axle nut correctly. The less knowledgeable backyard mechanics tend to just crank it on with a cheater bar and pipe combo super tight, thinking "tighter is better" without even bothering to use a torque wrench. Overtightened axle nuts lead to a massive preload on the bearing, and usually a catastrophic failure. Couple weeks ago a car was towed into the shop, wheel bearing had failed after only a few thousand miles for the exact reason previously mentioned, the tire was bent out at nearly a 45 degree angle, and the wheel had nearly separated. I am all for the do it yourself mentality, I started off as do it yourselfer before persuing a career in automotive myself, but it's important you do your research and are willing to invest in the tools to do it right. That's why this video kinda irked me, because these are the kinds of videos DIY'ers watch to learn how to do repairs, if they go torquing on their axle nuts with no torque wrench, and impacting on their lug nuts, VERY bad things can happen to them on the road. This video is teaching dangerous techniques...

NO, bearings use a special grease. Most come pre greased . If they lose the grease, you can repack them with a repacking kit or a needle to pump it in.

so, just to confirm understanding, the recommendation is to STILL remove the wheel bearing that is 'noisy' even if there is NO play when the free hanging wheel is 'rocked' (see at 00:50)??
