tips and tricks inside this video hopefully help you

A dual-mass flywheel (DMF) is a rotating mechanical device that is used to provide continuous energy (rotational energy) in systems where the energy source is not continuous, the same way as a conventional flywheel acts, but damping any violent variation of torque or revolutions that could cause an unwanted vibration. The vibration reduction is achieved by accumulating stored energy in the two flywheel half masses over a period of time but damped by a series of strong springs, doing that at a rate that is compatible with the energy source, and then releasing that energy at a much higher rate over a relatively short time. A compact dual-mass flywheel often includes the whole clutch, including the pressure plate and the friction disc
Dual-mass flywheels were developed to address the escalation of torque and power, especially at low revs. The growing concern for the environment and the adoption of more stringent regulations have marked the development of more efficient new engines, lowering the cylinder number to 3 or even 2 cylinders, and allowing the delivery of more torque and power at low revolutions. The counterpart has been an increase in the level of vibration which traditional clutch discs are unable to absorb. This is where the dual-mass flywheels play a key role, making these mechanical developments more viable.[2]
The absorption capacity of the vibration depends on the moving parts of the DMF, these parts are subject to wear. Whenever the clutch is replaced, the DMF should be checked for wear. The two key wear characteristics are freeplay and sideplay (rock). These should be measured to determine whether the flywheel is serviceable. The wear limit specifications can be found in vehicle or flywheel manufacturer's published documentation. Other failure modes are severely grooved/damaged clutch mating surface, grease loss, and cracking
Individual bent spring
The simplest form of the bent spring is the standard single spring.
One-phase bent springs in parallel
The standard springs are called parallel springs of one phase. These consist of an outer and an inner spring of almost equal lengths and connected in parallel. The individual characteristic curves of the two springs are added to form the characteristic curve of the spring pair.
Two-phase bent springs in parallel
In the case of two-stage spring there are two curved parallel springs, one inside the other, but the internal spring is shorter so that it acts later. The characteristic curve of the outer spring is adapted to increase when the engine is started. The softer outer spring only acts to increase the problematic resonance frequency range. When the torque increases, reaching the maximum value, the internal spring also acts. In this second phase, the inner and outer springs work together. The collaboration of both springs thus ensures good acoustic isolation at all engine speeds.
Three-phase bent spring
This curved spring consists of an outer and two inner springs with different elastic characteristics connected in series. This category of bent spring uses the two concepts together: parallel and series connection in order to ensure optimal torsional compensation for each value of torque

DMF's are used to prevent harsh vibrations going through the gearbox. I'll rather pay extra and have a DMF than have to replace / rebuild the gearbox. And most DMF's go when the clutch is worn out anyway. Every car I've had a dmf failure on the clutch was nearly on the rivets.

Thanks Leon, I have been really worried that I'd made a huge mistake when I did the clutch on our Disco td5. We were getting that horrible screeching noise that happens when someone doesn't lube the spigot bush properly. Anyhow, we changed the clutch at the same time but I couldn't afford to do the DMF. I tried to check it and it did roughly what your new one did. The clutch I took out wasn't too bad and I figured to just go for it as it's our only car. I feel much better now at it was a really heavy job I hope not to have to do again in a hurry.

Thank you for this very informative video! My RG Colorado will need a new clutch very soon. I've never dealt with duel mass flywheels before so I have no idea what to look for. In not going to risk leaving the flywheel and just replacing the rest, I'll do the lot! I have heard that I can change to a single mass clutch kit and save a few dollars but I think I'll stick with what nature intended!

Here in America most vehicles with dual mass flywheels are on diesel trucks. I always replace them with a single mass flywheel. Some of the European cars also have them. Very few cars here anymore even have manual transmissions.

I had a dual mass flywheel and changed it at 130,000 miles as I was doing the first clutch as a precaution. Pull away in second with the wheels spinning see how long they last. Drive the car normally. The centering bush has cracked and half gone the flywheel surface is off centre and must have had a lot of vibration. 190,000 kilometres ain’t bad in my book.

I have been experiencing a problem with the DQ250 gearbox for the last 10,000 km and it sounds like this: When the clutch engages there is a clunk, the gear shifts are very linear and nothing is felt. I have noticed this phenomenon also when I go, in any gear, take my foot off the accelerator and put it back on, a clank is heard. I'll leave some videos below with what I'm trying to explain. I'm guessing it would be the dual mass flywheel, the car having 210k km. The dog bone and mounts are ok. Replaced the CV Joints but nothing changed. The sounds appears when you try to reproduce the noise which gets louder and louder the more you try to reproduce it Also when i'm in idle i feel sometimes some vibratians and when i put it in D, the vibration dissaperes. On VCDS there's no errors from mechatronic unit. What do you guys think? Video on my profile.

I had a '02 diesel Focus with about 150k miles. I parked, on restarting it terrible sound! I thought the starter had failed to release from the ring gear. No DMF! I limped it home only reving to. 1500 rpm. Sounded and felt dreadful! I needed to use it still but in the return trip I redlined it and did some violent gear changes several times. The noise and shaking stopped, and it was still okay when I got rid of it 50k miles on. Guess I got lucky!

When mechanics install a new clutch do they ordinarily check the flywheel? Asking as I purchased a car a few weeks ago which had a new clutch installed in Dec due to previous owner burning it out, and the clutch and gear shifting is a nightmare. The dealer has booked the car in with the garage he uses for another new clutch install...but I'm concerned the flywheel is shot and the same issue will happen again if the flywheel is not replaced.

I checked my DMF with a prybar. Actually, joking aside your evaluation of the DMF is correct. Why on Earth did Vauxhall and other car manufacturers decide to have a DMF ? Life was so much easier with a solid lump of flywheel, you just swapped the friction disc and a complete Pressure plate and disc with a release bearing to do the job right and proper. £75.00 compared to £475.00. No brainer.

Hi. I have an Opel Zafira. F40 gearbox is used in this vehicle. I'm at the service for chain replacement. The service technician said there was a gap in the flywheel. The video belongs to us. Is this normal? This flywheel was changed 20 thousand km ago. Can this flywheel be used? Is it normal to have this much gap at 20,000 km? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZinf6p4jL2SiZo

What a stupid design. I wonder what prat came up with this idea, probably the same people who designed the v6 Diesel engine on Land Rover. Our engineers seem to be going back instead of forward probably related to Vladimir Putin? That would be a good idea only my main dealer one lasted 58000 miles , so a pattern will probably last just as long and be a lot cheaper.

Great instructional video as usual.. I replaced the failed Dual mass flywheel on my Skoda Octavia Tdi with a four piece National brand solid flywheel clutch kit. The set only cost me €200, I also replaced the rear crankshaft oil seal, and the clutch input shafts seal... Managed another 80 thousand miles of issue free driving before selling the car... As I recall, the Valeo single mass clutch kit was twice the price at €400 and the Dual Mass replacement clutch kit was over €1000.. The National brand clutch kit has lasted over 130 thousand miles since it was fitted, and is still going strong... Yes Valeo make good stuff, but it's way overpriced..

I'm glad you have saved money mate but at the end of the day you get what you pay for all so you have to take into consideration a customer is paying me to do the job I cannot not put parts in that could fail immaturely because that would just cause me an issue with the customer means I have to do more work for free and it just causes too many problems I put the parts in that I know I can trust that's how I've got to work just for my own reputation I'm sure you can understand that

I think you can still check it on the engine. You should still be able to feel the dead zone or slack. Most dmf manufacturers will specify how many teeth the deadzone should spread across. Am i correct? I saw what you did but i cannot feel how the spring is pushing against.

My dual mass flywheel was slipping after 280 000 kilometres (not the clutch lol.) on my Mitsubishi pajero 2008 model and tha clutch was still in good condition. Also had a ton of grease coming out from that flywheel. You can't repair them either. Best is go back to old school single mass , problemmo solved

Many of the engines that were fitted with dmf have switched back to solid flywheels in later redesigns. Manufacturers claimed they were required to prevent crankshafts snapping, but the fact they supplied the same engines with solid flywheels and simpler harmonic balancers shows that wasn't true. Some engines had solid and dmf fitted to different models in the range at the same time particularly vans/commercial models. PSA 1.4+ 1.6hdi came with dmf on cars and solid on vans so you could just buy a cheap flywheel and clutch kit for the van model to convert using OEM parts.

How long should a new flywheel last from new ? Would you recommend a second hand flywheel ?
@EcoupeNmt
@EcoupeNmt 3 жыл бұрын
They usually last around 100k or so if you're being nice to your car! I wouldn't recommend a used one cause you'll never know how long it would last and more than likely have to replace it with a new one shortly after planning the used one. Save yourself time, money, and the headache by just replacing with new one, you'll benefit more!

I am a 78 year old ex has been donnington Gt champion 1980. My latest challenge is a 2008 Lancia Musa .1.3 multijet manual 5 speed gearbox . the garage owner who sold me the car claims it has a new clutch. Obviously I aint no mug . the assurances that it has a brand new clutch tied in with the new front discs and steering ball joints . n BUT .. after fitting the two new supplied front tyres an alignment indicated badly worn front lower control arm bushes and ball joint s Ok €500 plus euros later .. I coughed up €6500 euros for this as new looking Lancia Musa .checking over the new front discs and pads all seemed ok at the front ..; so a quick check on the rear brake shoes . the wear lip and corrosion made removing the rear brake drums a bit of a war game . grinding off the rust / wear lip made servicing the rear brakes a breeze . Back to the clutch .. a slight judder and sluggish gear changing was causing an issue .bleeding the clutch slave cylinder helped but the clutch drag / vibration was still there . Now comes the bombshell . the 1.3 fiat multijet engine has a dual mass flywheel . Ok the dealer is adamant that the Musa has a brand new clutch . No mention of the 160,000 km Dual mass flywheel being replaced . My local garage owner / mechanic claims to always replace the dual mass flywheel and the clutch at the same time . I can see why . the clutch is fine but the worn out Dual mass flywheel is preventing a smooth take up .The whole assembly is wandering all over the place resulting in clutch vibration / mild judder . returning this money pit shiny toy seems to be the best option .. and getting my dosh back which will probably need some eyeballing .wish me luck .

A few years back, I had a DMF disintegrate on a 3 year old 60.000 mile Xsara Picasso. I knew something was not right as I started getting a vibration wobble when accelerating whilst towing a caravan on holiday in Scotland. Guy at Murchisons Garage in Kyle told me DMF's often pack up in towcars due to the extra load. Beware buying a car with a towbar fitted!!!!!!

Now then, I had a mk4 Golf tdi fitted with a SMF, drove ok, a little jumpy pulling away in 1st but after that no problem. I now have a Leon mk2 Tdi FR 140 ( 1P1 ) with a DMF nearing the end of it's service life, getting a bit clunky. Can you see any probs fitting a SMF ? I keep hearing bad comments about long term damage to transmission etc, why? surely that's down to clutch control. The Leon has done just over 100K but I would say when I bought the car it had been fitted with a towbar so probably got some abuse.
