If you have a check engine light and get a p0301 - p0308 code its a coil more than likely so here's what to check and what to do to fix it. Coil should ohm around 1.8 -1.9 ohms area .

I have 10 new coils from Ford, all 10 have the same resistance as the coils that came out. Except one. The key, that you missed here, is checking resistance from the B+ terminal, to the spring, and coil driver, to the spring. And that is how you do it properly.

Thanks for the video, was chasing a misfire in a 2000 Mustang GT and turned out to be a coil which had both corrosion at the spring connector and a nice crack towards bottom of the boot, replaced boot & cleaned everything, car running fine now.

I’ve had my truck for 12 years and got what I knew was a misfire. I took it in for a new spark plug and they told Me p0345 the engine needs to be replaced, replaced spark plug per customer request, no change in rough idle or power loss. Looked under the hood and they didn’t plug the coil in all the way. Makes me wonder if they even changed the spark plug and decided just to burn me for having an old truck with a p0345 and a misfire cylinder 5. Plugged the coil in and it runs better but still roughy idols and only gives a p0345 and p0349. After seeing this video I will change the coil. I know my truck and am positive that’s the problem and not the camshaft

hi really good explanation. only thing is my check engine light isnt on so i couldnt scan it. I have a Actron scanner andr an a scan on it anyway and came back fine. my plugs are new.its missing at idle and when driving. is it possible a coil pack is going out but not trigering engin light to come on?

wow so i just got the email for this comment today. The answer is yes these coils if dirty at the connection under the boot is corroded it will make it have a miss at idle and not give a check engine light.

An ohm gauge will not tell you the coil is bad except if it is open. A power probe is the best way to check coils. I got the same reading on a bad coil and a good coil. Use a power probe.

I don't have cop, I have regular coils and wires to plugs my mustang does miss but throws no codes what so ever. Once it warms up and I cut the car off and try to crank it back up , it doesn't. Have to let it cool down then fires back up easy.and will run and idle never stalls or die out, I believe it's the coil packs , what else can be the cause of hesitate and missing ?

Hi Cody, Thanks for the video. I just replaced my plugs and coils on my 05 explorer because of bucking between 40 and 50 mph. At 98K, it was time. Problem is that the engine is missing worse than before. Looking for problems, I found that all new coils (and old) ohm-out 1.8 or so, haven't actually checked the new plugs but being Motorcraft, I figure that they are ok. I also ohmed the fuel injectors that I could reach and they also came up at 1.8. Any ideas? No engine light at all, by the way.

@@lamarwilson8608 thanks for the reply! I have since discovered that my expedition is eating plugs! I have used both styles of motorcraft plugs (assured by my local ford dealer that they are correct plugs) only to have the tips break off, causing missing and check engine light. I have started replacing the Motorcraft plugs with Autolite plugs at the advice of my mechanic. I have gone 6 months without changing a plug so far!

Too bad these back yard quikieos are not very detail oriented. . .Depends on your meter and the coil rating. Check your manual for the correct ohm value then set your ohm meter to the number just above that rating. for my meter, I use the 0 ~ 20k because my ohm value should be 5.5k ohms.

Die electric grease is an insulator and should not be applied to the spring/pin on the bottom side of the coil where u cleaned. Only apply this to the boot on the outside.
@comamche8672
@comamche8672 9 жыл бұрын
Keith Rhea Generally spark plugs are located in areas of high temperature, and the grease is formulated to withstand the temperature range expected. It can be applied to the actual contact as well, because the contact pressure is sufficient to penetrate the grease. Doing so on such high pressure contact surfaces between different metals has the advantage of sealing the contact area against electrolytes that might cause rapid galvanic corrosion.
@keithrhea1
@keithrhea1 9 жыл бұрын
***** You mean electrolysis? Dielectric grease can be used to keep water out thus I said not on contact points. Do your self a favor do a resistance check with and without the grease. You will find the answer. The grease itself will not keep metals with severe difference on the anodic index from corrosion. Have a good one.

The dielectric grease is to keep corrosion at bay and repel moisture and is used in all automotive related electronic ignition situations... maybe in a home PC or other indoor environments there is a better solution but for the automotive industry di electric grease is the go to substance ... for plugwires a cheaper alternative in NAPA caliper grease it works in same fashion does not dry up or swell rubber and repels water and been using it on coils and plug wires for over 30 years ..why ? because a fucking lil tub of di electric grease is $35 plus (15 years ago ) and a tube of napa caliper grease is less then $5 and twice as much lube .. I used to get the tubs of di electric grease from GM free as a tech while doing repairs

It truly amazes me how many so-called good mechanics never talk about the other end we all know things go bad on this end but for god sakes you just broke out the measuring device why would you not show us the other end or at least speak on it how to do it where to go who should I ask blah blah blah blah blah no one literally no one talks about the coil pack side... By the way if you're confused about what I'm saying and think I'm confused I'm speaking of non cop systems because you're just as many 10th Generation Ford out there with non cop Motors as far as I'm concerned matter of fact I've never owned a cop motor and I've had Crown Victorias and F150 is all up in the 97-98 era.. the most common culprit for a pesky misfire feeling is the entire ignition system meaning one or the other or the other or the other or all of the above or whatever may be a combination of two or three maybe even moisture coming through a head gasket who cares who knows the point is they all play a part and it's very rare that one of the mediums fails without the others failing as well and with that said it's usually something creating this failure so with all that said I've never seen a bad boot they're either too old or just fine go replace all of it the biggest culprit I've ever seen in this whole entire ignition system is the wires themselves the quality of cables and if you're not running Motorcraft you probably have a misfire and if you do have Motorcraft they are probably Rusty and old and ready to crumble apart I've seen wires make more of a difference than almost dead plugs now as far as the coil pack goes hey it's all about testing it before you just go buy two new ones but that's my point here is I can learn all this other basic mainstream bullshit from any one of these millions of posts but where do I go to figure out the coil pack side? And then I called oreilly just for the fun of it to ask them if they test them and he tells me they don't have the equipment I was blown away I thought all you needed was a multimeter.
