I know that technically, you’re not supposed to use both gel and regular nail polish together but because regular nail polish removes so easily, if I want to only have a color or design for a few days, I’ll do extensions with gel, do a gel top coat, then I’ll do regular nail polish on top! Then I can just use acetone to quickly remove the regular polish whenever I want but it won’t go through the gel top coat! The only regular polish I use is holo taco now and any of the toppers over a clear gel overlay or extension is literally so stunning 😍

I LOVE the last remover! I have been using it for years. I use it every time to remove glitter polish! I do have to rub it harder like you would a cotton pad. Sometimes I will use my other hand when it gets low. I wouldn't use it on clients for sanitary reasons. The sponge starts to not look pretty but still works til it's empty.

Susie in your next video will you explain the difference between shellac and gel polish, and why salons charge different prices for these two services? Aren’t gel and shellac the same thing? Thank you so much!

The only difference in it is a brand name shellac is cnd ‘s gel polish range that’s all .. it’s just gel polish there really is no difference..
@enits39382 жыл бұрын
I think shellac has ordinary polish mixed in so it can be removed with acetone easier instead of soaking it like you would with straight gel products. Don’t know about the prices though.
@TallulahFoxxx2 жыл бұрын
Nail tech here 🙋🏼♀️ So Shellac is a brand name, and gel polish is the type of product (like Kleenex vs tissues). Shellac is one of the *original* gel polish brands therefore it’s the most well known ☺️ Shellac is expensive for techs to buy so generally shellac manicures have that cost passed on to the client. Other great professional gel polish brands often have lower priced products, so you can charge your client less. Shellac - in my humble opinion - isn’t that great lol. It was revolutionary when it came out, but it isn’t now. It’s been surpassed by other products. As someone above said, Shellac smells like nail polish because it isn’t 100% gel. The issue with this is the polish parts start drying as you apply it, so it can often be more difficult to work with - especially when you’re doing nail art on top of it. If you make a mistake when using 100% gel polishes, you can use some alcohol and wipe the art away to start over, and the base colour stays untouched. With Shellac, wiping over it will smear it and remove some of the colour because the nail polish inside it will start to dissolve. It also doesn’t last as long as 100% gel polish. Shellac is only guaranteed for 2 weeks, and this is part of the reason - normal nail polish breaks down. Shellac is still popular, AND it’s overpriced purely because of its name - not because it’s a better product. Gel polish technology has moved on since then and 100% gel polishes perform much better. It’s why most pro brands are now 100% gel. Now, I’ve personally never seen any salon charging two different prices: one for Shellac and one for another brand, but I’m in the U.K. It may be that in that area, clients “know” the shellac brand and don’t want any other one, so the salon buys in some shades. As I mentioned, Shellac is overpriced, so it costs the tech/salon more to purchase it, therefore the client charge is higher. For clients that aren’t looking specifically for Shellac, their service costs less since other professional brands cost less for the salon to purchase ☺️ Hope that helps!
@TallulahFoxxx2 жыл бұрын
@@chrishall9880 see above ☺️ Shellac isn’t 100% gel. It’s an older “generation” of gel polish, so it still contains nail polish - hence why it smells like a regular nail polish. It has a slightly different application texture and doesn’t last as long as 100% gel polishes.
@krahvata2 жыл бұрын
@@TallulahFoxxx Thank you for the insight. To me, the advantage of gel polish is that it stays on once you cure it and doesn't dry quick like regular polish so you can manipulate it as you like as long as you don't cure it. So there's not really an advantage to buying Shellac if it behaves like regular polish.

LA Colors (popular at Dollar Tree) has little acetone free pre soaked remover pads that smell like strawberry oil that work like a charm for residue or tiny bits of stuck polish after soaking off gel. It is amazing for moisturizing cuticles for me because I remove the polish in mornings then do new polish at night or next morning for myself. For a buck for like 50 little pads, you seriously can’t beat them. I also use them for any glitter stuck on skin too. It’s definitely a staple for my nail care arsenal.

I've switched to non acetone remover because I heard acetone is bad to use when you're trying to get pregnant. But I HATE non acetone removers. 😭 I also can't use gel or acrylics though due to that dreaded allergy. Whatever I grab to remove my polish however I always, always wash my hands very well after removing my polish. And than I drown my nails and fingertips in my cuticle oil.
@phantomkate62 жыл бұрын
Acetone evaporates really, really quickly. There won't be any left on your skin by the time you get to the sink to wash it off. It also works a lot faster to remove polish. My reasoning is one would have to be very confident that the non-acetone remover was proportionally safer, to make up for the fact that you are in contact with it for so much longer. Just something to think about! Ps: I'm also not sure where you learned of acetone's adverse effects in pregnancy but... there's no evidence to suggest it's dangerous for anyone except in extremely high concentrations. I understand if that doesn't change your mind, though!

I wonder if the non-acetone product needed to be shaken or was open for a while or if that particular brand just doesn't work? I use a non-acetone remover by Mineral Fusion and it works just as quickly as acetone for me, I really cannot tell the difference! One time I went quite a while between uses (6+ months) and it had stopped working. I replaced it with a new one which worked just fine. My guess is that the ingredient that does the work of removing the polish had evaporated by then since the bottle had been open for so long.

I enjoyed this! Can you make a video educating people on restoring thick, dried-out nail polish? I noticed a lot of people, even techs, just keep trying to make it work not knowing there are products out there to restore them to their original consistency.
@bethnadeau61832 жыл бұрын
The problem with lacquer thinner is that you can only use it a couple of times in the thick polish before it's not effective. Polish gets thick in the bottle because it's being used before the first coat is dry, basically contaminating the polish. Happens with top coat, a lot, because of impatience... (personal experience, there!)
@cameronr592 жыл бұрын
@@bethnadeau6183 I don't necessarily agree. Nail polish naturally wants to dry and if you do not keep the bottle closed tightly and/or keep it open in a place where air conditioning is running or you live in a dry climate, it's going to thicken or dry up a bit. I feel thinner is pretty effective at maintaining the consistency of some of my older polishes and it never lets me down.

I like to consider myself a nail polish expert - used to use automotive paint touch-up vials from Canadian Tire for that extra metallic finish, i have signature patterns including the "Pink Panther Claw", my nails were once featured in ELLE Canada, and people still ask me if my nails are real. Yes they are, i only use nail polish, no fake or gel nails and i'd never let someone else do my nails. And one of my rules is : never use nail polish remover. It's basically acetone i.e. paint thinner - it doesn't matter if it has lanolin it in LOL... that's like saying, my arsenic has omega-3's in it... and it will damage your nails and fingers. I apply 2 coats of Natural Revlon as the base coat and use a quality nail polish - i used to love Julep before they went bankrupt and now i use ILNP. When i want to change colors or my nails have grown enough that you can't repolish them and it look good (3 weeks max), i can just peel off the polish like a banana peel. I'm surprised you don't know that as a nail expert. I also always let my nails breathe for 24 hours between polishes, and i moisturize them 😉
