One of the most frequent watercolor questions I get is how I choose my pigments for every painting. In this video I will explain exactly how I decide on color variations within the same color "family", and how you can start "extending" your palette and expanding your color choices using deeper understanding of light and color theory. Enjoy!

Wow that was so helpful! Especially that bit about having a base color and then bringing in cooler and warmer tones of the base color! That is something I can remember. Thank you so much for all of your videos. Your artwork is gorgeous and your videos are so helpful

Thank you for a very useful video...I will definitely be trying to apply this more deliberately...I knew about the foreground being warmer than the cooler background, but never heard darks/shadows as typically cool versus warm highlights...it makes sense though and your examples definitely reflect complexity of colour and temperature...I will definitely explore your videos further, I get frustrated that there are so many youtube videos with artists merely showing their latest indulgent purchases and swatching them! It is nice to observe a trained artist who can impart new information.

I really enjoyed this video. It helps to clarify the color selection process. I love Mr. Tyson! He is such a wise man. I am going to incorporate this simple 3 step process into all of my paintings. This makes me want to really study my color wheel and make the most of my palette! Thanks so much for sharing your talents. I love your work!

Thank you ❤️ try painting light or white subjects where you can focus on practicing shadows specifically. And I would recommmend doing them as a separate layer 😊 this approach works best in my experience ❤️

This is helpful. I have always loved the way you organize your colors. I remember the first time I saw your chart. I was so excited I had to run and tell my husband. Based on the video, it seems you use cooler colors to push things back and warmer to pull them toward the viewer. This seems to help create depth using the principles of atmospheric perspective. I am curious, do you have a “formula” for using warm and cool colors for turning forms? Do you use cooler colors for the areas with more light? Do you use warm colors in the shadows? Or do you use warms colors as form turns into shadow and then cool colors as it turns further yet? Okay, one last question for now. 🙃. Do you have a difference in how you treat caste shadows verses form shadows when selecting whether to us warm or cool colors? Thank you.
