This legitimately so cool. The way you did this by experimentation and the way you are using their own feces to help enrich the soil and grow plants on the enclosure is a genius idea. Your hamster may not know it, but they are helping their ecosystem stay nice and fertile.

Honestly, it would be interesting to offer both: traditional cage connected to a natural setting. Let the hamster wander between to see what it wants. I think that they would prefer the modern setting, because any animal can be lazy. Also, it seems that there is a business opportunity for selling apple sprouts to hamster/rodent owners. This is so interesting and it makes sense, because this is what happens in nature, and nature is often best for an animals welfare. You are changing the way we look after animals with these videos. Doing these experiments and being innovative is what the pet care industry needs. This is my biggest inspiration. I hope to set up my own bioactive hamster enclosure some day. Keep it up!
@timjung6403 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt bioactive will work for mammals. It works in the wild because their living space is *vast*. Captivity generally implies a comparatively tiny living space. Mammals poop a LOT more than reptiles, and the cleanup crew in such a small space is probably not remotely enough to keep up with the poop. Let's see the results to know for sure.
@palomanyoka13433 жыл бұрын
Honestly I don't think people realize how much easier and nicer natural set ups can be. Having the ecosystem clean it for you and outcompeting bad bacteria to keep the enclosure safe and happy.

Springtails eat more mold than poop. For poop, try buffalo/lesser mealworm beetles (Alphitobius diaperinus). Regular yellow mealworms (Tenebrio sp.) might also work; I just know from experience that A. diaperinus is incredibly hardy, prolific, and busy at cleaning up poop.

I really enjoy these videos. Us humans really have a weird relationship with animals and I think we have to pay more respect in ways like this where we try to understand more about the natural needs of the animals. Hamsters seemed very foreign to me as a kid because in the usual set up there really doesn't seem to be much resembling the life of an animal. It almost seemed like an alien Mouse that doesn't live in a natural environment because why would it live in a cage with plastic tubes. With this video I can start to understand the animal. But it also adds a lot of questions. Do we really know hamsters well enough and provide them with the right things? For example concerning diet it makes a lot of sense that hamsters eat sprouts. Sprouts have a similar mineral density as seeds but they also have vitamins, are easier to digest and they are common in nature. But as pets hamsters aren't usually fed fresh greens right? Only seeds, dried vegetables and meal worms. From a natural viewpoint I would think that hamsters would mostly eat seeds in the winter when it's cold and the vegetation is gone. It would be very interesting to see if trying to get more natural environments for the hamsters can reduce the occuring of tumors. I'm open to any hamster knowledge.

@hamsterlab13 жыл бұрын
I have no professional qualifications for it. However, I studied the relevant data and found that there are no bacteria in the soil that are harmful to hamsters. Bacteria that are harmful to hamsters can be sufficiently infected by air, people, leftover food, and flying insects even if they are not raised in soil. To teach how to raise hamsters in the soil, i'm going to start research on his own. I'll take a sample and find out by culturing the bacteria in the soil and bedding. I think I will be able to give you a clear answer within next year + within.

If that's what you did you should know better than to let go hamsters who were bred to be pets-not wild - you pet hamsters are domesticated animals and are not equipped to be out in the wild their wild instincts that would have kicked in outside have been bred out of them. You should never let go of a pet and make it fend for itself out there like that. What is wrong with you?
