How to Clean & Restore Leather Boots

This video goes over the basic steps to clean and protect leather boots. You can use the same process for almost any smooth leather shoes (e.g. not suede) including work boots, hiking boots, and cowboy boots.
Basic steps are:
1) Remove surface dirt
2) Clean wight a leather cleaner
3) Apply leather conditioner
4) Apply a leather sealant
There are tons of products and processes for cleaning boots and some manufacturers will recommend one product or another for different reasons.

Good video, I personally use saddle soap for my Thorogoods. Also a lil side note when using mink oil, it will darken your leather depending how much you use. So if you want to keep a light/original color be cautious with any oils.

Thanks Julio- You can use Bick 4 for nearly all leathers. It is not recommended for use on suede.

Yes, as long as the boots are clean you won't harm them by applying a conditioner on top of a polish. The conditioner will serve to enhance shine, not condition the leather if the leather has been sealed by polish though.

Yes, you could apply mink oil before or after applying the conditioner.

@@Emezepe3 No, Bick 4 is a leather conditioner. Mink Oil is more of a sealant / water repellant. There is a little overlap in what they do, but each is much better for its main function

SADDLE SOAP!! Spend more time cleaning your boots Do you wax your car before washing it?

Hi Mike- In this video we use Bickmore Bick 1 to clean the boots, not saddle soap. However, saddle soap is a glycerin-based soap that is meant for cleaning leather. After cleaning with saddle soap you can buff the leather to bring out a little bit of a sheen. I would compare it to a car shampoo that contains wax agents - it will give the appearance of having been waxed, but the primary purpose is for cleaning, not protecting. To get a proper seal after cleaning you would want to use a waterproofer like we used in the video or a wax shoe polish.

@@chaarstore thanks for the reply. (realized i sounded a little harsh) i've never had much luck with the Bick 1. (doesn't seam to extract or pull dirt/dust out as well, IMO) seems ok for non-work shoes (i personally spend a little more time cleaning though, and like the longer boot cleaning vids)

@@mikerinaldi3979 Yeah, if dirt is really impregnated into the leather it can be a lot harder to get clean. Sometimes a scrub brush and some dawn dish soap will get the job done if its really bad. If you seal a new pair of boots with wax or mink oil before wearing them outside it can make clean up a lot easier to manage. Should note that these boots in the video had been treated when new and periodically throughout their life as well which is why cleaning them up was pretty straightforward/easy.
