I soaked my handle for almost an hour and couldn’t get any gunk out. I think it is because there wasn’t any. I use a 50/50 mix of peroxide and water to floss my tenth at least twice a week, often more. That is the only think I can think of. I have a lot of the bad habits like not emptying the water and had never cleaned the handle. I expected a lot of gross stuff to come out. So I am adding to my routine the proper habits you displayed in your video. Thank you.

Instead of using vinegar, you could use tablets used for sterilising baby bottles. (e.g. Milton sterilising tablets in UK). A lot less odour than vinegar and a lot cheaper. Plus easier to store as the box of tablets are tiny. I got this tip as my wife used to have to use a sputum suction machine when I was caring for her and the manufacture instructions were to soak the capture tank daily in a 25% vinegar solution with warm/hot water for an hour before rinsing and air drying. Replacing the vinegar with the sterilising tablets made the process much faster and easier as part of the daily care routine.

This is also what I do since i have the same model. For emptying the tubing, I noticed just running the machine empty still barely gets all the water out (also want to add that running the machine on level 10 gets way more water out). I turn over the machine (empty), turn it on and sort of gently thrust the machine up and down and tons of water comes out. After that, I remove the tip and swing the head in the air to get out excess water near the top of the handle, this also reassures me there's no visible bits of nastiness hanging out in the handle. Then I hang the handle upside down over a desk corner to let it drip and air dry upside down over night. I know it sounds like a lot but it takes like 2 extra minutes after using my waterpik. This was a big investment for me and I do not have the funds to replace the machine down the line if mold develops. Apart from that, one of my worst fears is flossing with a waterpik riddled with mold as I already have periodontitis!! Great tip about putting your toothbrush and waterpik outside the bathroom!! I put all my oral care items in another room next to my bathroom. I keep the doors closed and fan on in the bathroom when I need to go.

You can run the tank dry till no more water comes out, but the line still holds water so, I hold the base up high above the grip allowing the line to just kinda dangle there, and then I shake the grip just like you were doing to help get the remainder of the water out of the line. These waterpiks are kinda high maintenance, (with constant cleaning) but it's the best investment I ever made. Just sayin.

I have a new routine when it comes to my waterpik. I clean it once a week. Because I feel like 3 months just ain’t gonna cut it for me. So yeah! After my previous mistake, I have to make a routine for myself to keep it as clean as I can. I’ve been doing the same for about 2 weeks now. And so far, no mold. That’s a good thing. So if I keep cleaning it once a week, then there shouldn’t be any mold in it. Of course, I do why you do as well. Let the water run all out of the reservoir and let the hose empty out, etc. So yeah 😎

I almost felt like you were patronizing me when you said dump the water in the reservoir after you’re done but when you said run the unit to drain the lines, I sat down outright humbled and watched the whole video. Thank you for the info. The waterpik waterflosser I bought at Target for $40 back in November broke yesterday and I’m gonna see if maybe it’s just mineral deposits from 3 months of use I never ever really thought about but I already ordered the waterpik Radiance because honestly the only reason I even bought that first waterpik is because I honestly thought it would disappoint me so losing $40 isn’t as bad as the $120 the Radiance costs. Now that I’m sold on the waterpik in general yeah I’m gonna get the big boy Radiance.

Lots of great tips for us civilians ;-) Thanks. Lots more great tips in the comments. The reason you want to get all the water out of the tubing is that bacteria will grow inside if it is wet. Have you ever picked up a fish, or tried to pick up a fish? It's slippery, right?! Why? They are coated in bacterial slime. The bacteria live on the fish skin and the slime is a biological waste product from those bacteria. That slime will collect inside the tubing if you allow the bacteria to live. The slime is not necessarily toxic, but it is gross to most of us. And if you leave it there, something toxic might grow in it. And eventually the tubing will clog with slime. So, as someone in the comments pointed out, purging the entire system with rubbing alcohol instead of water will ensure there is no water left and no bacteria left. The alcohol evaporates quickly leaving no bacteria behind. I should add that before you use the flosser again, it might be a good idea to purge any possible unevaporated alcohol out with a flush of fresh water. If you have soft water that's even better.
