You can do LEDs in series instead of parallel. Easier just connects to neg all the way around and just put the 2 wires at the end led. Lol at case crack you don't put plastic in freezer makes it brittle.. Use blow dryer or hot air gun jewel just falls off no hammer needed.

Thank you so much for documenting your process for the rest of us to follow! 1.) One improvement I would suggest for removing the xbox jewel would be to center a roll of tape, whose diameter is larger than the jewel underneath the top case when you hammer out the jewel. Instead of a hammer, try using a rubber mallet whose diameter is about the same as your xbox jewel when hitting the underside. 2.) You briefly went over this in your video, but I would like more information about the cleaning tools you used. What type of cloth did you use with the Brasso to rub off the green paint without scratching or clouding the acrylic ? Was it simply a paper towel? When I removed the adhesive from my xbox jewel for the first time, I noticed a razor blade helps remove the top layer of adhesive off, but there was still a thin layer of it left over. What type of Goo Gone did you use exactly? Was it a liquid or gel? What type of cloth did you use to wipe off the adhesive using the goo gone? 3.) What type of wax did you use to protect the silver colored paint used for the indented "Xbox" letters from the brasso? How exactly did you apply the wax before cleaning with Brasso? Using a small cue tip?
@TechnoOnTop8 жыл бұрын
james bond hey, definitely a good tip I never considered using something between then hammer to help 'pad' the shell. But yeah all I used was a paper towel. You could use a micro fiber cloth. It's tough to really protect it from being scratched during this process. The goo gone I used was actually "goo off professional strength remover" I found it at a dollar store. In the past iv used paint thinner which worked perfectly but took a lot of elbow grease , then I also used a "goo gone industrial" strength which destroyed the jewel. Just be careful with the solvents you plan on using. But I wouldn't worry about scratches to much because you can use a polishing compound to make it look new again. Stuff like plastic X or what I use scratch X work wonders and won't require serious buffing. Hopefully this reply makes sense I'm replying on my phone. If I missed something be sure to let me know and I will do my best to answer. I appreciate the support and your tips
@TechnoOnTop8 жыл бұрын
Oh and the wax I used was just a normal candle wax . You just rub in the Xbox before using the brasso to take the paint off. No tool just grab it and rub it in like you are preparing a ledge to slide on (if you happened to skateboard)

I would suggest a different route on the actual clearing of the jewel, I use varied grits of sandpaper from 220 all the way to 1500 going higher would no doubt be better, then polish it up using some scratch X, it's much quicker then using brasso, I appreciate you subbing glad to have you aboard! Happy modding if you do plan on pursuing it!

If you are on a budget by getting nail polish remover, various degrees of sandpaper from rough to super fine grit and a can of clear epoxy spray by rustoleum. Let the jewel soak in the nail polish remover and if you do want to preserve the lettering wax does work well. Nail polish remover does cloud the jewel, but this is where the sandpaper comes and does take a bit of time, but the results after playing the clear epoxy spray look amazing. Most of the jewel prior that I had was scratched up from a prior owner. I plan to just fill in the lettering with some UV powder mixed in with resin or paint color. As for removing a jewel, I use some elbow grease and slipped a case prying tool to loosen it off then used Goo Be Gone.
@TechnoOnTop5 жыл бұрын
I have attempted to use nail polish in the oast, both the non-acetone and acetone versions, the non-acetone ended up just "melting" the jewel lol. I have a new method that's quicker then using any type of chemical, just wet sand the jewel with fine sandpaper, starting at 400 then going as far as 2000 then just polishing up, it's not really a cheap way because all the different grits add up, and the polish. But it takes 10-20minutes vs the hour+ spent with brasso. Iv never been able to remove the silver in the lettering cleanly it alway looks terrible and ends up just ruining the jewel for me, as for removing the jewel I just use a hot air rework station. 100 degrees keep moving then gently pry, iv tried the just pry method but you can really mess the jewel up if your not super careful, but thanks for sharing! Happy modding!

Great job in cleaning that jewel,hard luck on the case I usually use a hair dryer then put a thin fishing line between the case and the emblem to cut trough the adhesive,you need a bit more patience but it works every time..subbed
@TechnoOnTop5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a risk for sure, iv attempted with a hair dryer, I feel like they just don't get hot enough, nowadays I use my hot air station, just gotta be cautious not to melt the plastic. Much appreciated!
@Snooper97007 жыл бұрын
Also I decided to use nail polish remover which is comprised of acetone, knowing the risks. It did cloud my jewel quite a bit, so I ended up using silvo which is kind of a spin off of brasso. After about an hour of rubbing, the silvo removed a small layer of plastic that the acetone had eaten removing the cloudy effect. The jewel is now pretty much ultra clear. One thing that I do notice is the fact that is a VERY small amount of green paint in the letters "xbox" combined with the silver paint in the lettering. Obviously I dont want to put any chemicals/abrasives inside the lettering or it will remove the silver paint. Have you encountered this at all? Thanks.
@TechnoOnTop7 жыл бұрын
i believe i have seen that at least once, thats awesome that you where able to un-cloud your jewel! plastic X may also do the trick. sucks about what happened to your case. if you planned on painting you could smooth it out, bondo-sandpaper-primer paint and have it looking like new. or you could just do a textured paint which would hide that it was ever broken.

I like your tutorial quite a bit but something might want to consider is using 3M 300lse adhesive this is the same type of material I use for cell phone screen mounting it's a clear double-sided adhesive and once it hardens or solidifies it becomes very strong so you have a little bit of play before it fully sets and then it'll take quite a bit to get removed if you have to readjust it later this is also safer on the plastic and hot glue is easily removed and can fall off with just a little bit of effort

When it comes to resistors, I used a calculator to find that one 3mm led needs about 100 ohms if it is getting 5v from the molex. I see that you use 470ohm resistors. If I use a method where every led has a resistor, would I use 100 ohms on each or 470?
@TechnoOnTop8 жыл бұрын
I just use 1 470 for all 8 LEDs. But if you could probably use 1 100 for all 8. But you don't need a resistor for every LED. Just on the main positive out. Also I'm pretty sure I used the 12v source not the 5v

This tutorial is a total failure, I broke my up plastic trying to remove it that way, the cold plastic becomes more brittle and breaks very easily, it is better to remove it with a little heat and dental floss
@TechnoOnTop4 жыл бұрын
And the tutorial says(and shows) the risks of using the "freezer method" not everyone has a heat gun, but using a heat gun comes with its own risk of melting and deforming the the plastic. Nowadays I use a temperature controlled hot air gun. But back when I didn't the freezer only killed one top shell out of 5 or so not terrible odds if you'd rather be cheap and take the risk..... With that being said I don't use brasso to clear the jewel anymore because it takes forever I just varied grits of sandpaper.
