Wish more curly girls talked about Sebhorric Dermatitis. Every dermatologist I’ve been too is a straight haired white lady who tells me to wash daily with medicated shampoo and use less conditioner. 🙅🏽‍♀️ oh no no. Not an option honey. Following their advice my hair got so brittle around the hairline it STARTED FALLING OUT! I’m only 17!!! I was so devastated. Currently recovering thanks to videos like this. I definitely recommend looking into the Cantu Shea butter apple cider vinegar+tea tree oil root rinse for something cheap that’s available at Walmart or target. After YEARS of battling Sebhorric Dermatitis it’s probably the best thing I’ve come by.

Not gonna happen doc! 🙅🏽‍♀️🙅🏽‍♀️ I recommend once a week tops when it comes to shampoo! Really liking this so far and just got braids so really going to be counting on the oil to help out! Stay tuned!

Well my black dermatologist gave me a medicated shampoo because she states if the ingredients aren’t Ketoconazole with zinc you’re treating nothing and she’s absolutely right. And surprise I was told to wash my hair once a week.

A lot of people I know have started to suffer from this condition, you are right it could be the food. We have hard water where I live in the U.K, which is a contributing factor to this scalp condition. I shaved my hair and used bottled water, which improved the itchiness straight away. I can now treat it and watch it re-grow. I was wearing wigs a lot and it could be the conditions in which the wigs are made/prepared in, add our head sweat to that. So ladies think of wigs and start wearing our natural hair. Be proud of it before it's gone!

You provided really great tips and as someone whose been suffering with this condition for years now let me just say that this has helped me to have hope. I once had very thick and full hair ( I've even committed to wearing it only in it's natural state) and since this condition has taken hold I've lost at least 50 percent of my hair. It has left me feeling helpless and depressed at times but it's good to know that I'm not alone in this experience. I don’t have that issue, but I use to get dandruff when I was relaxed a lot. I use to put grease on my scalp and massage it in thinking I was moisturizing my hair. Boy was I Wrong! You live and you learn. I think those ingredients can benefit those who deal with dry hair. I love using olive oil in homemade deep conditioners.

*** long comment alert *** I’ve been struggling with this condition for about 3 or 4 years now. It’s so crazy because when i was relaxed I didn’t have these problems. Anywho, it’s so hard because I work out frequently and I sweat ALOT so the sweat and the excess oil and buildup really cause me a lot of irritation. (I’ve woken up from my sleep because of the itching so bad) it’s so annoying. I HAVE to wash my hair weekly to give me some type of relief but by day 4, I be struggling. I used to get medicated shampoo from my dermatologist and of course he advised that I wash my hair more than once a week but as a natural, that’s not a thing. At least not for me. long story short I am glad I came across this video so I can purchase these products!!

@AminaMarie
@AminaMarie 5 жыл бұрын
I wished the medicated shampoo worked for me but it honestly dried my hair so much I didn’t notice a major difference. If you have to medicate-wash more than once I week I recommend to try using this shampoo/conditioner once a week and then either using the conditioner or cowash to cleanse midweek. This is definitely an affordable line considering the ingredients and value, but for your midweek refresh you might also consider the Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner as a cowash that retails for $3.99 (save some coins on the refresh and save the stronger products for wash day) Sometimes doctors will prescribe 3x a week not taking into account that natural hair doesn’t produce as much oil as straight hair and therefore can’t be safely processed as often. I’m not a professional but wouldn’t recommend washing that often for the sake of your hair (and sanity!) 😅 Hope that helps!

I've had SD since when I was at high school... and I've literally tried everything dermatologists prescribed. Dozens of shampoos, creams, lotions. Most of them are too aggressive, many of them have bad ingredients in their recipe, so I tried to work more on the brands of what I buy, and my lifestyle. I can confirm dairies and alcohol worsen my condition, as well as yeasts (pizza, bread, cake, etc.). I learnt online that putting oil on my scalp isn't good at all, while apple cider vinegar rinse goes a long way. :) So: no SLS shampoos, no foamy stuff and no alcohol on our delicate scalp! Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

Yep I was told sebhorreic dermatitis is actually from an over production of and build up of oil (sebum) and is not the same as dry scalp. Cleansing my scalp every 5 days with the Shea moisture charcoal shampoo is the only thing that's working for me. So frustrating to have to wash my hair that often
@Fee07
@Fee07 3 жыл бұрын
Yep! Just went to a dermatologist two days ago and she said that I has this and it was dry scalp. It came from the over production of oils. She told me to cut back from using too much oil, not to wear headbands to cover up flakes bc that traps moisture, eliminate stress, less heat,, and to get my anemia in check. She proscribed me so shampoo and this foam (lol that foam is like magic! Lol).

Devon Clemmings: dont add moisture though. Your whole comment was good up until the moisture part. The reason you don’t add oil to a scalp with dandruff is you want a clean, dry scalp. If you use drying shampoos and your hair gets brittle, put conditioner from the shaft to the end, but not on the roots. Oil feeds the fungus and makes it overreact, which causes pain and flaking and that pulsating feeling you get when you dandruff gets bad

In a lot of cases dermatitis is also caused by irritants like essential oils. People often think it’s only the chemicals but in a lot of cases it’s nature causing problems. I saw someone in a curly girl fb group recommending mixing essential oils in your shampoo to fix the problem 😩 Luckely the woman with the dermatitis allready knew that was a horrible idea😅 Oils can trigger fungus also.

I have dermatitis too and it’s been so depressing to be honest. I feel like it’s never gonna go away. I went to the doctor they gave me a shampoo and did nothing. So I went back they upped the medication and gave me a scalp oil to use after. I had to do it to twice a week. And it honestly helped. But as long as I finished the products and I try to go to a regular routine. It started to react terribly. Any recommendations for hair growth or preventing hair thinning. Cause dermatitis has made so much of my hair fall out 😭
@AminaMarie
@AminaMarie 5 жыл бұрын
I totally understand and that’s why I moved away from the medicated shampoos because it makes our skin so dependent on the medication that it’s a viscous cycle should we ever go off of it. I recommend using all natural products every chance you can and really take a look at your diet and body stressors. Usually you can tie something going on in your life to the times where it flares up badly so take note of those and I bet you’ll see a noticeable difference! I’ve had luck with these products and for edge growth (I feel you girl! 😩) Tropic Isle Living’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil and Pimento Strong Roots Hair Growth Oil has helped me a lot!! Massaging these in every other day or gently before bed has really helped me thicken my edges. Also less tight buns! Hope that helps! If there’s any more on this topic you’d like me to cover please let me know! I’ve been dealing with it over the last 5ish years so I’ve learned a few things! We can manage it!

They told me not to use oils on his scalp while in treatment, ,that was fine while he was a baby, now 11 yrs later and frequent flair ups and changes to his system, the medicated shampoo is very trying and harsh on his scalp and not oiling after shampoos is a hard thing not to do.. I usually use olive oil because other so called solutions cause him to have ugly flair ups. I will try the olive oil and tea tree treatment. Agree.. I am working slowly on what to eliminate out of his diet that he will accept is best for him..

I've had SD forever, since when I was 14 and got to see dozens of dermatologists. All of them gave me the same diagnosis and kept saying that this is a chronic condition, caused by a number of reasons (stress is one of them if it's in the family...bingo). I can say I've used more than a hundred different shampoos and treatments to calm my itchy and inflamed scalp down but I'm still trying to work out something that lasts. Antifungal shampoos dry out the scalp and the hair, in the long run, don't work. Aveda Scalp remedy calms down the itchiness (bless it) and kind of clears out the scalp as well. What I can say is that any product (even the most famous ones) that produces lather ISN'T good for SD. I found out in the last 6 months this gorgeous and effective product line called Boucléme (Curl cleanser is fantastic!). Did anyone try these products?

This line is so much better than medicated shampoo (in my opinion) for any hair texture! It uses much gentler ingredients and won’t damage your hair! When you compare ingredients and feel the difference in your hair during your washes you’ll be able to tell right away by how much easier it is to detangle. I remember my medicated shampoo made my hair feel so dry, sticky and brittle 😖

No matter what we apply topically, its always going to be temporary unless we detox, fast and cleanse our bodies from the inside out and correct our diet so issues won't keep coming back. Sure you could apply topical treatment all your life, but your body will always be suffering and you won't function at your best.

I do, I actually just used it this week! Your diet is definitely playing a role in your flare ups unfortunately, so cutting out a heavy bread diet (especially white bread) and reducing your salt intake will help! Processed sugars (found in white breads) can have a really negative impact on the skin and will feed the yeast growing naturally on our skin 🥴 Hope that helps!

@AminaMarie

You can definitely give it a try! I think it’s not as necessary in the leave-in as much as it is for the oil mixture because that’s more focused on the scalp where leave-in focus on the strands. I’m so sorry to hear that and I feel your pain 😞😞 This product, especially the oil has truly really helped me so much. The shampoo and conditioner have also given me a lot of relief. Have you identified your stress triggers? That is a great place to start and when they’re thick and yellow flakes like that I think it might benefit to limit your dairy intake and reduce sugars you’re eating for a couple weeks to see what happens. Almond milk is a great alternative and make sure to take a look at the sugar levels in the foods you’re eating. Yeast is what’s living on our scalp and it feeds off of sugars which can sometimes be another trigger of big flare ups. I hope that helps but if you have any more questions lmk on here or feel free to DM me on IG! ❤️

It’s very strong so I would put more water than the apple cider vinegar because I felt a little burning. Half and half wasn’t enough . You know stuff like this doesn’t just go away so I also did aloe Vera gel . I sectioned my hair from the back since that’s where I face a lot of my eczema & I put a generous amount. It’s usually really patchy and flaky but after the apple cider vinegar it calmed down A LOT after one use . With me using the aloe Vera after 2 days I feel like it also helped a lot . I’m using it right now as I go to sleep and I feel so at ease after a long time . If you can’t afford these products , these two stuff are really good at home ! I heard castor and peppermint oil is good too

Jamell Carter aloe Vera gel is also GREAT as a styled and I feel like ppl are really sleeping on this. If you like polished looks and slicked back edges or ponytails , you can use this as a substitute for gel since gel can be problematic for sensitive scalp .

Its so hard to find As I am products in Canada :(

Bummer, what are the popular beauty supply stores in Canada? I’d love to get the names so I can do a little homework. I did find the products on Amazon but the shipping at the moment makes them a little steep. My top 3 for the treatment of the scalp in order would be the shampoo, oil, and conditioner (if you need to narrow down ordering online).

Can you still get braids and sew ins w/ SD
@AminaMarie
@AminaMarie 4 жыл бұрын
You can but I don’t recommend getting them when you’re having a flare up. I would try doing a clarifying wash day and oiling your scalp with a protein-free, wheat-germ free (no wheat proteins) oil and waiting 2-3 days to see how your scalp responds before getting braids. As long as there’s no irritation it can still be an option. I try to avoid braided styles where there’s a LOT of scalp showing just to be safe

I created a product that I know will help others as much as it has helped me and yes, it is anti-fungal but lightweight! New to Etsy but please check it out. The drops work and are lighter than anything I've tried so you can use them every day if you so need and a little goes a long way. I use the Nizoral Shampoo for the ketoconazole and this! www.etsy.com/listing/859685499/seborrheic-dermatitis-natural-scalp

Seborrheic dermatitis is literally an issue that comes with oily skin (thus the "seborrheic" in the " seborrheic dermatitis", it means it is cause by sebum, the "natural oil" of the skin)... It's not "dry skin". The pores don't "open" in the sens that things can more easily go in like little doors. And I don't think dairy has anything to do with seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is connected to our sebaceous glands oil production, yes, but dealing with it also means dealing with the painfully dry patches of skin that come from the rapid skin cell turnover to keep up with the oil production. In addition to red, rash like patches, many deal with dry flaky patches of skin after the fact. Dairy has been linked as an irritant, but not a cause of course.
