How to Coach: Scanning

Scanning in football is so important but often times it isn't coached in the right way.
We've all seen the videos of Messi, Xavi and Lampard doing it but it isn't enough to simply shout 'scan'.
Players needs to know the why and what.
This is a great football training drill to use with your players to work on scanning whilst also mixing in some passing and 1v1 work.

Wow. That is a terrible drill. To much time on the player passing the ball. Teaching kids to lay off like that is pointless.

It's not a bad drill at all. It's very basic, and that is the point. It teaches a behavior to start with and presents open-ended questions that lead to player actions. Any coach can add progressions or regressions just like any drill ever created.

Certainly not a perfect drill but it can help with developing scanning in a football context and not just telling kids to scan for the sake of it (how many kids do you see these days just turning their heads left and right because their coach has told them to?). Scanning should become an unconscious habit done in the right way and not just because a coach is yelling ‘scan’. The other thing here is that we work a lot with development players. Activities like this give them more time to practise passing but within a semi-opposed environment (defenders locked into an area but still trying to intercept). So the passing players get a few more touches and are afforded time on the ball but still practise passing with ‘some’ opposed elements. Once confidence and competence increases we would of course allow the defenders to then close down and press. Perhaps we’d start with 1 pressing defender then build up to 2. Football drills/activities need to be adjusted for your players and this is an example of what we’d do with a group who were maybe new to football. Any questions please just ask 👍
