In this video I will show you how you can use your dogs own language to communicate with them. I will also show you how to interpret your dogs language.
This video is about the secret language of dogs. Some of you might already know about Calming Signals, but the main population that find out about dog training through Television programs might not.
In no way do I condone pestering a dog in order to make them offer calming signals for you to see. I kissed Kiko on the head in this video to show her response, not that I want to condone it! ☺ Also certain dogs will like to be touched and kissed in different situations. So you can tell if your dog is happy with the attention or not by their reaction.
Dogs bite. You should never put your face in a dogs face. Calming signals can be offered when you are standing or sitting, I was very close to Splash at one point in this video because it was hard to fit us in the video screen, and Splash is very comfortable with me being that close to her face. Never lean into a dogs face in order to communicate with them! Its Threatening!
Turid Rugaas is an internationally renowned dog trainer who has studied and researched calming signals for over a decade! You can visit her site on calming signals to learn more AND PICK UP ONE OF HER BOOKS AND DVDS on the subject.
www.canis.no/rugaas/onearticle...
Here are the main calming signals that I like to use with dogs-
1 Soft Eye Blinks
2 Looking Away
3 Lip Licks
4 Yawning
1- You can use calming signals to calm a dog down and tell them "no worries"
2- You can monitor your dog's calming signals and if they are doing more than normal you can tell your dog is getting more stressed (calming signals are normal and happen all the time)
3- If you pet your dog and they offer a calming signal that is normal, but Imagine this Scenario- a child pets a dog and he offers lots of calming signals, then the dog walks away from the child, and the parent brings the child to the dog again, and the dog offers even more calming signals and walks away to lie down, then the parent brings the child to pet the dog a third time, and finally the dog is so stressed that it growls, or bites. The parent could have read that the dog did not want to be petted by the child more than that first time if they knew about calming signals.

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

As someone who has rescued dozens of dogs, some of which were abused and extremely fearful, I'd like to thank you for putting out this video. Commenters aren't understanding that these signals are for dogs that are not comfortable with you, or with their surroundings. They do work with a frightened or confused dog. It's extremely important to know the signals they give to one another so you can tell when your dog is stressed by another dog or by a person. Dogs have an easily understood form of body language that humans usually ignore. That's how bites happen. They were warned, but didn't recognize the warning. I've saved the link to this video and also just sent it to a new adopter tonight because I think it will help both her and her dog. :)

+janegael I have an incredible anxious West Highland White Terrier. He gets aggressive very quickly, and super excitable. One instance is when we order Dominos, I swear he knows the work 'pizza' as he'll start crying and whining until it arrives. If anyone knocks he hates them. I think he's just a jerk. I love him, but he is a giant -albeit little- bully!

This doesn't work for me and my dog. If I lick my lips, he thinks I've just eaten something and needs to lick my face. If I yawn, he thinks I'm tired and need my face licked. If I look away, he thinks I'm ignoring him and I need my face licked. My dog doesn't seem to need calming when he is around me. We get along fine.

Yeah, this advice is meant for dogs with behavior issues like high anxiety or fear aggression. Either your dog doesn't need it, or he has poor impulse control or is often at a high a state of excitement so he doesn't respond. :)

This was so cool!! My little rescue pup still mostly sleeps with one eye open and just now, an ambulance passed by outside while he was taking a snooze. He was instantly alert, ears pricked, and he looked at me. I licked my lips and gave a big yawn and he *immediately* flopped back over and resumed his nap. I feel like a wizard!! Very cool to now know this information!

YES! When dogs blink at you it is a very friendly gesture. It can be a greeting, a dog can blink when you stare at them, when dogs NEVER blink at you then you should worry! (unless its a bully breed or pug that dont seem to do calming signals in the same way) If you are walking up to a strange dog and they are just giving you a hard stare without blinking or looking away, that is not as inviting as a soft waging tail, ears back, blinking eyes and a grin.

Since using yawning and vocal sighing, my dog has lost 90% of his fear. He is so much more relaxed and confident. So... If they're calming signals when humans do them, such as saying "all is well, don't mind me, there's no danger"... Why are they stress signals when the dog does them, such as saying "don't bother me, that's annoying, please stop"..? Sorry for the confusion, I'm just having a hard time putting the two together when it would seem (to me) that if a dog yawns at me, it's telling me they're no threat to me, same as I would be telling them that *I* am no threat to *them*.

+minustwelve You are exactly right. You're just not seeing the big picture. These signals are calming signals no matter if it's a dog or a human which do them. When a dog is stressed, he sends calming signals to the surroundings(other dogs, humans and itself) in order to calm down the situation in an attempt to relieve itself of the stress. Therefore when you see the calming signal from the dog, it may very well be because the dog is stressed.

They say when a dog rolls onto their back they are showing submission. I have no real advice, but eventually she will come around and adjust. I have a boxer-pitbull and she was adopted from a shelter. She eventually adjusted to her surroundings after being sick, but she is still a very nervous girl. Sometimes your dog has a particular personality that you think is odd but really means nothing.

She still bites though, she poked a hole in my hand, it hurt. @Laurz23x
@Laurz23x 7 жыл бұрын
Martha Montoya Nambo you should give her some space when she needs it and cuddle her when she wants to if she doesn't want to cuddle then you should call her in a calming voice and I think it's best to like go down on her level so as she doesn't feel so small and helpless cause she probably thinks she's going to be Abused again.its probably more than likely that the abuser was standing up when hurting her and humans are ovoisally bigger.so get to her level and use a calming reassuring tone of voice and reach your arms out but let her go to you don't Approach her that's so she doesn't feel forced to do anything. if she runs away don't chace her just call her again and if she comes to you try it again and if she doesn't wait about a minute and try again you should keep trying until she should atleast trust you enough that you won't do anything to her after that.all situations and dogs are different idk if that will work or not it depends on how scared she is if that makes sense and Idk if it will work cause it's just personal preference I have two dogs but they weren't abused it's still some sort of experience I sapose oh and I'm 14 so I might be wrong😂👈 I just felt that's what I would do lol there is lots of options to try like as I said it depends on how badly she were abused and how much she trust's you hope this helps I was typing for about 15 minutes trying to think of the best way😂 if it doesn't and tell your dog I said hii✋💘

Same as when she said she used a look-away as a calming signal, and then gave an example where the dog looked away to tell the other dog to go away. No hate here, but it just seems really inconsistent. Feels a little bit like cherry-picking the information.

Eve Demian yeah , thats a good point . Everytime I came home from work , my German Shepherd would run around me with his ears down flat but definitely not from fear . It seems to me , that theres plenty of good methods , but in the end it relies on instinct and simply "knowing" the dog
@evedemian

Oliver Phelan Your dog that "nips a little" needs a good, solid leadership program, regardless of the reason for the "nipping". That needs to stop. I suggest using the Ian Dunbar program. I think it would be very beneficial for both you and the dog. Yes; knowing the dog and having good instincts are important - - but training those instincts so that you can make *informed* decisions on set-ups and responses, will be invaluable to you. Good luck with rehabilitating your foster!

you are brilliant! i have a 15month old rottie male that is high energy. i watched you video yesterday and tried these out last night when i got home. AMAZING! i could just FEEL him relax into mush when i did the calming signals. i used them several times and was magic EVERY time. this morning i needed to leave for work and Moe was on the porch. i opened the door and called him, he just stood and looked at me. i looked away, yawned, and he ran right into the house. THANK you for the video.

+blackdiamondtheonful They are indications that a dog is stressed, because when a dog is stressed it uses calming signals to calm down the surroundings (dogs, humans and others) in order to not be stressed any more.

I don't understand. You said that when humans do it, it calms the dogs down, but when the dogs do it, they're annoyed and want to be left alone?? Isn't that opposite?

+bublmidget I have the exact same question, but I can't find a reply anywhere.
@bublmidget
@bublmidget 8 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Smith Actually I thought more about it and I think I figured it out. Basically the actions calm the dog down. So if we promote the action, then it will make the dog calm.
@SuperManning11
@SuperManning11 8 жыл бұрын
bublmidget So do you mean that the dogs are being calmed by the fact that we are simply doing actions that they can recognize, but since they are being performed by humans these actions no longer carry meaning as they do on an intra-species level? I would love to know more about this. My philosophy has always been that the more time we spend together, the more my dog begins to understand me by simply hearing my repetitive language and keenly observing the corresponding actions and tones that go along with that language, whether directed at him or not. It is basically an understanding that goes one level deeper than simple verbal commands that are directed at him in order to elicit a specific behavior. My dog seems to have formed an overall perception of pattern recognition in the cues he gets from me, and reacts accordingly. I even believe that he gets a certain amount of pleasure, or at the very least, comfort from understanding me and anticipating what I will do next. He is surely aided by the fact that I am a very simple person, very much a creature of habit, and by extension of repetitious words and actions. He certainly seems to really enjoy learning specific tricks or commands, probably because it gives him something solid to hang onto amidst his general observations of my day to day behavior. But I have NO credentials of any kind to support my theories! I'm just a regular ole' guy with a dawg... And I want to do as much as possible to make sure my dog is happy and healthy. Thanks for commenting back.

+Stephen Smith Since you showed interest: The signals are a calming signal no matter whether they come from a human or a dog. The fact that the dog uses calming signals when it is stressed (therefore calming signals are an indication of a stressed dogs) is in order to calm down the surroundings (humans, dogs or others) in order to avoid the stressful situation. I hope you found this helpful

Occasionally I have to drive my chihuahua and jack Russell 50 minutes when I visit family. In the past it always involved a lot of excitement and jumping around (including trying to crawl onto my lap!). This week for the first time I used lip licks, yawns and turning my head to create a calmer environment in the car. I'm so happy to report that it worked! The dogs retreated to the back seat and chilled. Thanks kikopup, your lesson really helped.

This is great stuff but confusing a bit. You say you used a calming signal to calm your dogs from the howling outside, then you say your dog is giving you calming signals when you're petting her ears or face (sorry, I forget which ears or face, and my wimpy tablet can't negotiate me watching and commenting simultaneously) to tell you to stop it. The first instance is you soothing a dog or dogs, the other is the dog telling you to stop something. I get your meaning most of the time but not always. Perhaps you could add qualifiers to "calming" so we can be certain what you mean all the time? For instance, 'soothing calming signals' or 'calming affirmation signals' or something like that? I'm fascinated by the degree of repeatability (like with the blinking and lip licking). Would like to understand this better, thanks!

I believe she's referring to the second scenario as the dog trying to calm himself down, which is why she says the dog is uncomfortable. I'm not saying the dog doing it versus you doing it means something different, but that's why looking at the big picture instead of an individual signal is a good idea
@modeldaughters
@modeldaughters 7 жыл бұрын
Hope Rowgo In one instance she signals the dog to a calm state, in the other instance the dog is signaling her to stop an action. Because to "calm" and to "stop" each has a different definition, it gets confusing. I think she means they both fall into a broader category of 'calming signals' but without what I just said being explicitly stated, it's leaves the doctrine in an eccentric state of intent. I think I understand, but when someone is teaching me I much prefer to "know" what they mean than to "think I know" what they mean.

I'm an advanced PhD student in psychology, and I think your "theory" has some merit as a hypothesis. My research is not in the area of neuropsychology, but I've seen some researchers on TV recently whom you might want to follow online: There was a "60 Minutes episode that aired October 5, 2014 that you would find interesting; the episode is titled "The Smartest Dog in the World", and the researchers talk about dog intelligence and empathy, with neuropsychology research to support their explanations. Very interesting!

kikopup, ..You obviously are a very compassionate person. One tip to a stressed out dog I use when a dog is barking is I turn my back on them but continue my conversation to the person next to me. A pack leader dog will do this, as a way to say "chill out, I'm not threatened by you, nor am I a threat, I'll just ignore you"... It does chill out the dog who then no longer sees you as a threat.

Thank you. Tried with with an insecure/ dog aggressive dog. Amazed at their effectiveness. The dog started sitting/ showing belly after I started licking my lips, sighing and yawning - it helped that I was up late the night before 😂. It was doing zoomies, vocalizing, and growling at other dogs before I started giving the calming signals, standing at a spot for a few mins.

Really excellent and useful video, thanks! Will be on my radar screen when interacting with our dog. Works well with children, too. As a nanny I actually give calming signals to babies & small children when I'm trying to get them settled in for nap or bed. When they're on my lap or snuggled next to me, I breath deeply and slowly a bit more audibly than usual and I yawn. If they are positioned so they can see my face, I use slow blinks or veeeery slow blinks (otherwise known as a little peek to see if they are mirroring me). I hadn't thought of the term "calming signals", but that's exactly what I'm doing. Thanks for your video!

good stuff :). wish i had come across this sooner after i had adopted my current dog (pit mix), a dog that was obviously abused in her previous life. took well over a year for me to bond with her due to her fear issues. as for my first dog (papered pit), there was no issue with the bonding, as i raised her from an 8 week old pup, and she was ultra confident, and everything was cool beans from the get-go. this info is amazing in how oblivious that i now realize that i have been. thanks, kikopup!
