OMG. Simple, logical, technical breakdown of this common play. I play beer-league softball, I'm old, and I've been playing baseball or softball since I was 8, but never "organized" (with real coaches). I've never seen anyone break this down so well. If I'd just learned this I'd never have had problems with rundowns. Thanks, Matt!

I do pretty well in school so I’ve been talking to coaches at higher academic d2 and d3 schools, mostly within the NESCAC, but also at Skidmore, Brandeis, and Bentley. I’ve only seen an umpire argue with one person, never every person who opened their mouth!

Back when I played organized baseball (up to age 15) Abner Doubleday taught us to always run the runner back to the preceding base. That way if you mess up the runner is back at second instead of advancing to third. But now the prevailing wisdom is to minimize the number of throws, as you teach here. And I think you're right - the fewer throws the less likely you are to stuff things up. Any thoughts? Love your videos.

Yes we don’t care which way we run them, just get them out. The philosophy of only running them back to the base they came from causes too early of a throw to the lead base which can mess up the rundown. I also feel a rundown should be pretty simple if done correctly, so instead of doing it passively incase we mess up, we do it aggressively to get the runner out.

Hey Matt, I have a question for you. Who decides who gets promoted in the minor leagues? I am a Phillies fan, so I went to a Lehigh Valley game (Phillies AAA), and there were a lot of players on the AAA team that seemed like they would be able to help the MLB team. Yet, it seems like players don't get promoted even if they are playing better than someone on the MLB roster. It seems like they call people up from AAA who aren't even playing well despite there being seemingly better options available. I've even seen some people who never even made it out of the minor leagues, despite playing well all the way up to AAA. What factors go into deciding who gets promoted? And who makes the decision? Thanks

Hey Matt, I have been coaching for about 20 years now and have run them as you described. However my son who is now back from collage has noted something different and I tend to not agree with him. We now run a youth program together and i wanted to run this by you. Should the receiving player be the one to say ball as to the timing of the throw. What are your thoughts on this. Meaning that as the player with the ball is in the lane running at the base runner he is to hold the ball until the receiving player says ball.

So your going to make the runner commit to home if pick off third? I was taught differently. I was taught maximum of two throws with making the runner commit to their original base. If they are safe, no base is advanced.

Most are taught to never run to the next base. I think that makes it very tough to actually get the runner out. I just teach, get him out. And yes, the less throws the better
