Easier to think of attack/release on a compressor like an attack/release on a synth.

but the compressor is working the opposite way. turning the attack to the left on the compressor gives less attack, turning the attack to the right gives more attack. and on a synth you're lessen the attack by turning this parameter to the right. by turning the attack to the right on the compressor, you are allowing more of the attack coming throu, before it starts compressing.

@@madmike0304 not always some compressors work the opposite way
@madmike0304
@madmike0304 3 жыл бұрын
That‘s true. I always find it unlogical, cause attack to the left should mean fastest attack for the compressor, which means the compressor compresses the transient immediately and this gives a less punchy (attacky) sound.

First off man I'd just like to say thank you. I have been watching and learning from you for about a month now. What I take from your videos really help. I understand compression, But I never really understood the attack and release on the compressor. After watching this and applying it, It really made a difference. I was wondering why my vocals always sounded like it was in a tube under water. Come to find out That release knob was way too high!! Keep up the good work. I love learning new stuff. I put my UAD 1176 to ALL BUTTONS IN or 20:1 , and input to straight to zero or 6dB... then i just adjust the output to a normal level, and damn the sound is insane good. the trick is on the Attack though. On the 1176 you have to put the attack at 1 or 2 (all the way to the left) letting all the transient through, and it just does its thing. Don't put it at 7 it will squash the life out of your vocal. And the release set it exactly opposite, at 7. Note: The attack on release the 1176 are in-versed. That's why the numbers act opposite of what you think. Try it out

Best compression tutorial I've seen. 15 minute videos can be hard sometimes (ADHD lol) but you kept this moving and explained it well without too much detail. Excited for the rest of the chain to be split into series videos (eq, reverb, delay, etc). Obviously it's been done but for me it's about being digestible. I think 15 minute max per section. Thank you for taking the time to make the video! 🙏

Vocal mixing is kinda hard to break down into short videos haha, there is so much to explain especially with compressors! The video got chop down from like 20mins to 15 mins and I was like, " that's all I can cut out".. damn haha! I like shorter videos too, but we can spend 20 minutes just talking about what different attack settings can do😂

Great video as usual! I've learned a ton from you. Keep it coming 😀 Also, just a pointer for those that don't have third-party plugins and are forced to use stock (Fruity Compressor is trash but you use what you got right?).. Insert an instance of Edison after Fruity Compressor and set to Record "On play" or "Now". It will give a visual of what the compressor is doing to the transients. If they look too rounded/flat, back the settings of the compressor off until it sounds and looks more like the original wave file. Remember ALWAYS trust and use your ears as Lifestyle pointed out.

By the way, I heared people do overcompression these days, and Im also doing that when mixing back vocals or adlibs, even on main vocals sometimes. For example, I go -20 to -35 db with treshold and sometimes even 7:1 ratio. But it's quite extreme sometimes. Whats your opinion about that?

I heard that for pop and modern rnb vocals an 'aggressive' compression ratio is common, say 8 to 1. In doing this, would you still be aiming for between 3 - 6 db in reduction, or also more aggressive and go for a lower threshold? Also, if you're using multiple stacked compressors in a case like this, would they all have 8 to 1 ratio, and how high would the threshold be? What's the best way to understand the difference between aggressive compression, and gentle compression, how do you hear it, how do you do it, and what's it for?
